Analyst: Sony motion control "superior" to Natal

Natal "a technological solution in search of a problem"
Microsoft's Project Natal presents some pretty exciting prospects for gaming, but industry analyst Doug Creutz, reckons Sony's motion control offering is "superior from a gaming perspective".

"The Project Natal demo from Microsoft got most of the ink, but I really thought Sony's demo was superior from a gaming perspective," said Creutz.

"Natal appeared to me to be a technological solution in search of a problem," he added. "Do I really care if I can navigate my Netflix queue without using a controller?

"I had a very hard time envisioning playing Modern Warfare 3 using Natal. By contrast, I had a very easy time envisioning it (and enjoying it) using Sony's control/motion capture scheme.

"Microsoft appears to be trying to steal casual gamers away from Nintendo, which is a difficult proposition given that you're essentially asking casual gamers to upgrade twice during the cycle (assuming they already own a Wii).

"In contrast, Sony is squarely targeting the core gamer market, which is what they need to be doing," he told Gamasutra.

Fair argument. What do you guys reckon?

Fanboy fuel, thats what I rekkon... But I do agree, natal has taken it to the extreme with no tangible contollers, Sony's offering interests me the most, a happy medium between the Wii and Natal. I think this middle ground could be a potential gold mine. I for one am buying. Roll on Spring 2010!
Posted by ingy
Errrr, no, the 'core gaming market' doesn't want hand waving controllers of any kind, and the thought of playing modern warfare with all the waving, posturing nonsense frankly worries me :(
Posted by jazzy_p
I agree

Though the tech was impressive, nobody really asked for it. This obsession with taking the controller away that microsoft seem to have is strange to say the least. A controller is a players tactile connection to a game, and though i have yet to try playing a game without one, i would at this moment in time, much rather have one than not.

All the minority report style of control interests me about as much as the new call of duty..which is to say not at all.
Posted by bennyboi1979
Playing any game without anything in my hand would just not feel right!! Natal will be no good for gaming. SIMPLE AS THAT!!!!!

check this out dudes its about MS sending new kits to develepors with some special features to unlock 360s .http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/formats/xbox360/xbox-secrets-the-truth-about-xbox-360-relaunch--$1305320.htm
like sony does with 1st party sutdios
does this mean were gonna have to buy new 360s plzzz read
Posted by Black Mantis
Except it's not that simple. Until we've seen titles made with Natal in mind, you can't make a judgement either way.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
having sat down and played the first couple levels of the conduit last night. I ahve to say that pointer/analogue control is the future for fpss.

Its the closest thing to mouse and keyboard and really makes them smoother and more enjoyable.

I wouldn't say that sony are necessarily targeting either casual or core gamers , much in the same way as nintendos tech works for both. Personally at the mo i like the motion+ the most becasue i already have it and i know that its going to be well supported.

All we have from both MS and Sony are tech demos and promo videos. Needless to say i was more impressed by Natal than sony's wand, as all Sony did was show me soimething i've been able to do in gaming for almost 3 years on my wii.
Posted by thief90k
Is there a link to the Sony demo?
Posted by DrRickDagless MD
I think the controller will always be the prefered option but I like the idea that natal can add and new set of choices with out adding more menus or buttons to controllers. I do also think that sonys new system could be very good but after playing the Wii for the first couple of months I got fed up with either the controls not working or me being cak handed.

The main reason im on the side of natal isn't because I want to play Modern Warfare by waving my arms but because I want to poke someone in the eye in Fable.

^^WHERESMYMONKEY
Any good? :D
Posted by Black Mantis
No you won't have to buy a new 360. The article is reporting on new tools for developers to squeeze out some more power on the 360, thus resulting in better running/looking games.
Posted by DaRockwilder1
Who gives a dam what some analyst thinks. Both look equally good to me.
Posted by J1GSAW
Afraid i dont see the fun in Natal, be used for a bunch of casual nonsense then never used again.

plus you need a lot of space to jump around like a idiot. Fail from Microsoft i think
Posted by Black Mantis
 Jigsaw in "MS = Fail" claim!
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Fantastic. Graphically i'd say its on par with early 360 games like prey. The controls are spot on there incredibly resposive, the aiming is sharp. and thrusting the remote to pistol whip guys really helps you feel like you're putting your boot in. Simlarily using the nunchuck to throw grenades is equally amooth and awesome.

The closest thing to compare it to i'd say is if you crossed the original perfect dark and half life.

so far i'd say it was my GOTY on the wii and possibly any other console come to think of it.

If you have a wii, you owe it yourself to get a hold of this game and give it a go.

Though it pains me to say it, I happen to agree with this guy.

Whereas the Wand will allow gamers to play mostly any type of game - (and let's face it, who doesn't want to try COD with motion controllers?) - Natal will have to find a solution as to how gamers will achieve all the functions of a hand-held controller.

I've also recently read that Sony's camera will also allow voice recognition with a patch.

Honestly, the only difference that I see (as a gamer) between Sony's and MS's offering, is that I will be holding a controller (with feedback and buttons) with the Wand and I will be not using a controller with Natal.

I know which one I would choose, without even considering the fact that the Wand offers 1:1 control.

At least Natal is more 'interesting'.

Thanks for that Sir. I think I shall pop a pre-order on now then. :D
Posted by StonecoldMC
Yeah he's right! Forget innovation (something that MS are constantly berated for). How do we know what Natal is capable of, fully?

Rather than jumping the gun, ill reserve judgement until ive played both, call me old fashioned but I like to experience things myself before making final judgements.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
i've already played 2 CODs with motion control. They're better. Personally wasn't a fan of the zapper control in WAW but i can see what they were getting at. I'd say that motion control when done properly do add alot to a game as can a game being well presented, or just grapically impressive. put them both together and you are definately on to a winner.

It'll be interesting to see what some of the the more talented devs do with the tech.

Considering GOW3 isn't out untill next year it wouldn't surprise me if it included the option to use the wand.
Posted by Mark240473
How would it recognise you then?

Seriously though, that video has to be one of the most hideous I have seen for many a year. I thought the Wii adverts were soul destroying, but that took dispair to a whole new level.

And which parents will want there kids kicking like loons in the front room?

What I think people are failing to see here is that in the long run Microsoft will probably come out in top in terms of longetivity of the technology. Ok so Sony might have the upper hand against Microsoft now but in 2 or 3 years Microsoft may well have the upper hand because the technology they have could revolutionise a lot of aspects of gaming and media control. Just think Microsoft could eventually use their Natal system to control media albums in your media centre, play and pause live tv etc. Sony on the other hand may have the gaming market now but I think Microsoft have the scope for the better technology for the future.

How useful though the Natal will be in gaming is another matter but if it was developed right in games it could well take off. I think now it will be up to the developers to see where they can take Natal.

This is might I add coming from the perspective of a person who is not biased to any of the companies. Don't want to start a flame war!
Posted by wildhook2
Oblivion would work better with Wand than Natal.
Posted by Brian Bloodaxe
This guy imagined himself playing 2 different control systems then imagined enjoying 1 better than the other?

And he gets paid for this?

And CVG report this as news?

Wow.
Posted by Tonyb
Let me see here, this guy like virtually everyone else hasn't even seen a half finished game utilising Natal yet, let alone a finished product, and he is apparently already able to say that the Sony peripheral will be better?

Stop talking shit man and wait for the games not a brief demo.
Posted by Black Mantis
In CVG's defence, a lot of gaming sites have reported this. Whilst this analyst is calling it as he sees it, he seems to be missing the point with the CoD reference. Natal won't primarily be used for these type of games, so I think he should wait till he gets some hands on time with some finished games.
Posted by Wozzakl
Motion control of any kind is only suitable for a few game types: tennis, golf, boxing maybe... er...

I can happily do without it entirely. MS and Sony have only leapt at it 'cos of all the little kids, mothers and grannies flailing about on Wii games and filling Nintendo's pockets.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
yes. its also great for puzzle, fps, rts, racing and action adventure.

anyhting a standard controller can do well implemented motion control can do better. thats especially true with aiming.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
you could use natal for CoD and clasp your hands together, point your indexes out and shout "peeiaow, peeiaow" at the tv screen.
Posted by ingy
I think you're missing the point about all our fears.

It's the idea of having to wave your arms to throw a grenade for the 100th time during an hour long session of call of duty, or holding your arms up to aim at the screen all night long that surely will be the real pain in the bottom.

The standard controller works because at the end of a hard days work i can relax on my sofa and just twiddle my thumbs.
Posted by Mark240473
Yeah, and you could use your couch as makeshift cover.

Hell, Konami might even release MGS4 afterall including a cardboard box in the bundle.

I'm particularly looking forward to holding out my arms and harnessing myself to the ceiling for the next Ace Combat.

Endless possibilities!

Gamer: 'Milo, I appear to be trapped in a cardboard box.'

Milo: '?!'
Posted by Black Mantis
I think it's you who's missing the point. MS are targeting the casual market with this initially, you won't see CoD 6 using Natal anytime soon. You'll be able to play your favourite games with the regular control pad, maybe use the voice recognition for commands.

MS can't force developers to use this as it wasn't launched when the 360 came out, which means games still have to use regular controls as 30 million users won't be able to play certain games.
Posted by StonecoldMC
In a weird kind of way, that sounds brilliant :D !

I am sure though that the Devs will know what there doing and how to implement Natal into Gameplay properly.

Even still, I would maybe email MS with your idea though grasshopper, get that trademarked ASAP!
Posted by MrPirtniw
Well, I'm gonna reserve judgement until I get to try it- any gossip from analysts and fan boys is just speculation at this point. I remember how almost everyone (my self included) berated the Wii when we first heard of it- and now we're all stuffing our faces with humble pie.

I'm glad MS aren't just doing a 'Wii too' style handheld thing- I doubt the Wii will ever get knocked of it's perch that way. I'm not entirely sold on Natal either but the idea does sound cool at least.

As for the Wand? I can see a lot of SDF members all of a sudden coming round to the idea of motion control... hypocrisy is a wonderful thing

Of course the Sony tech is superior ,with Natal as it was presented you will be totally unable to move in a world like Zelda ,Gears or Uncharted because it hasnt analogue sticks.
Posted by Black Mantis
Was it presented using any of those type of games?
Posted by Guild_Navigator
Oh yeah, because the ****ing analysts have been spot-on predicting this gen, right?

History will ultimately prove who is right and who'll accompany the Intelivision Voice Module in the Island of Videogame Abortions.
Posted by Padua
I strongly suspect that Natal is going to remain vapourware for at least a couple of years, and by the time it comes out it will be different AND give you something to hold in your hand.

I wouldn't be suprised if MS decide to bring out a core console and a casual console simultaneously!

Motion controls are definitely the way to go for FPS and the like. I loved how Resident Evil 4 played on the Wii. It is incredibly immersive with motion control. I can't wait to try the Conduit.

Posted by ricflair
Right now, I can see Sony's system being slightly more useful in terms of gaming. Natal may be the better tech, but that doesn't mean that much as the wii's tech is pretty old and standard outside of gaming, it is just well implemented (by Nintendo at least!).

Although I can't see how you can play an FPS with any motion control apart from the wii's pointer. How would you aim accurately with the "sony love eggs" (copyright wiigoodboy).

Wheresmymonkey, you've been on one hell of an import mission lately haven't you?!?
Posted by flash501
Yeah there seems to be a lot of that going around lately.
Posted by dunkaldo
Wow folks can be so shortsighted. Natal isn't going to destroy the controller, it's going to improve the experience for core gamers and bring a new load of casual gamers to the party.

As a core gamer I can't wait to be sitting on my couch playing Gears of War 3 with my controller, ducking my body left and right to look around corners of things that I'm crouched behind, or turning my head left and right to make my dude look to the left and right. That's going to feel so immersive - it doesn't have to be 'arm waving gaming', unlike with the Wii or PS3.
Posted by TheKraige
The thing is both are pointless as far as core gaming goes, yes it's nice it can be done with core games but no one actually wants it done because controllers are miles better.
But if its a choice between something pointless and integrated to the system (as MS always does where the others don't) or a sub-par Motion Plus controller well thats easy.
Sonys controller wouldn't be as good for MW3 as Nintys would atleast 360 could use Natal ASWELL as the controller, as an expansion of current controls instead of a replacement, for other actions ingame the other two just leave you holding a stupid stick and missing your controller.
I for one will get Natal but will probably leave Sonys motion control as it's been done before (Wii)so will probably just have ports of the best selling attempt.
Posted by Diomedes1977
Of course not.Mainly because it would be totally unable to allow you to move freely in an open world. And with such a prefabricated and wii-like (happy family with white tooths in enourmous saloon )presentation that was 90% vapourware they wouldnt have selected a open world game to show Natal....it would have ruined the brilliant operation of marketing they were performing on stage.

But ,at the end of the day,its more important what is this tech good for and what it isnt, and for gaming it isnt (as it was presented so no controlller in hand)and Sonys motion controller with its buttons ,analogue and rumble ,will be better.
Posted by Navid.
If Sony really wants to sell their motion controller, they need to bundle it with a high graphic mini game compilation much like Wii Play.

Also bundling it with any Golf game (Tiger Woods 2010) would be very smart... After playing golf games with the Wii remote, I haven't really enjoyed going back to try the analogue stick version.

The main difference between the Sony motion controller and Natal, is in the fact that it just seems much more accurate and you have a object (with buttons/analogue stick) to hold on to, allowing for a wider degree of actions.

(I should become a analyst, this stuff is easy) :D :P
Posted by Black Mantis
»

So why mention games you don't even know will make use of the technology? It's all good looking for negatives, but until they actually show the actual Natal games, you should perhaps refrain from making these statements. FYI MS have stated Natal can be used alongside the 360 pad and PDP's Wand that comes with Squeeballs later this year.

Who cares what this jerk has to say who is anyway no one that's who. CVG only put crap up like this to start a fan boy slanging match
Posted by Richyrich316
This guy has missed something out of his comments though MS has already said that the Natal can function in co-operation with the standard controllers & for most types of core games I can see the devs incorperating the option for standard control or standard + natal control for certain features.

everyone knows you cannot take away the controller entirely as it is still the best way way to play certain types of games & like others say gives a physical connection to the game being played.

Sony's controller looked horribly rushed like a knee jerk reaction to seeing natal in action & came off as looking like a mish mash of Wii & natal & not being as good as either of them at the same time.

HAHAHAHA

BUT MASSIVELY INFERIOR TO WII AND WM+ HA HA HA HA HA

light tracking via cam is shiiit compared to the wii way and wm+ is 1600 degreees per second vs camera 300 degrees a second

light orbs will be hard to track and no analog stick and traditional layout like nunchuck and wiimote are a massive FAIL

wii has the best motion traditional como set up in existence

and ps3 motion fails at fps conduit has already moved the fps goal posts Wii is ahead and motion is standard part of console

ps3 motion hits cpu and ram hard SONY ADMITTED IT

now imagine wii+ end 2010 or 2011

wireless NUNCHUCK INCLUDING rumble speaker ir mouse pointer and wm+ built in

wiimote 2 as is with wm+ built in cleaner design

wm+ x 2 ir 3d mouse pointer x 2

rumble x 2

speaker x 2

presto the most advanced and precise 3d gaming controls ever a true evolution of wiis class leading current controls

light tracking cams cannot offer at the point of movement perfection and physics only wm+ can do that

natal crap and laggy and casual

ps3 motion the same but a little less casual

wii wins wiis successor DESTROYS

WII+

What got me impressed was how Sony demonstrated their first person shooter with the single point perpective of the eye toy cam, looking very interesting indeed.

Natal makes you look like your using eyetoy on PS2 without the eyetoy, score microsoft!!
Posted by slothfull9
I think everyone needs to stop speculating and wait until both the MS and Sony systems are shown in more detail.
Of course it's difficult to see how Natal could be used with an FPS - I doubt if it's intended to be - but I'm sure there will be some awesome games that use its particular features to the full.
And so far as being a 'solution in search of a problem' - that's what most scientists said when lasers were invented!!!

now imagine the fps possibility

true dual weapons true dual rumble true dual speaker sounds

combined with true wm+ 3d motion each hand
now imagine the dual weapon possibility's

camera movement and main weapon aim via wiimote then a cam in cam secondery aim (think twilight princess aim and wii sports resort archery aim but with ir mouse) as a second weapon in ur left hand

Wow you certainly are being super defensive of your beloved Wii aren't you. The funny thing is that the tech demo for the wand looked pretty damn accurate. Each movement made by the demonstrator was translated with apparent ease by the PS3 software. My experience with the wii remote has not been so impressive. Granted the new motion plus has supposedly addressed this.

As for the project Natal. Your banging on about Nintendo turning down camera tech when they first started designing the Wii. Surely the tech has moved on in the 5 years since the wii was first envisioned. Nintendo's whole stance when bringing the wii to the market was to make it as cheap and as commercially viable as possible what with the failure of the GC. Is it possible that Nintendo looked at the tech at the time and the cost of implementing it and come to the conclusion that it just wasn't a sound choice?

I think that the possibilities for the Natal project will depend alot on the imagination of the developers. Let's face it the Wii has come up short of what a lot of us imagined when it was first demo'd. The wii has been limited by the lack of vision of it's game developers.

I think I agree with the analyst. I initially was full of praise for Natal with its glossy E3 showing but after a few days of reflection I had to agree that you need something physical in your hand for any sort of 'real' interaction.

As for the aiming bit, I was lead to believe it (It being the PS wand thing) was pretty accurate for aiming games as the camera/sensor followed the height of the glow ball thing, so in essence it is very (very) similar to the Wii controller but the difference being you don't have to point it at the screen.

As for Wheresmymonkey, he always seems to have EVERY latest game (that has been just released or isn't out yet) on 'import' *wink*. And he has also expressed his passion for Homebrew on his Wii...

Not singling anyone out but it's always easy to praise a console or a game when they haven't spent their hard earned cash on it, if a person had just spent Ł30 on a game like Mario Party 8, you'd be a lot more critical about it....

P.S. Sorry strayed away from the main subject there!
Posted by jazzy_p
good lord, posting under two different names on the same page...

I was under the impression that the reason nintendo dropped camera concept was that it was too expensive compared to the infra red bar and less effective for what they wanted to do with the console.

you know what, im gonna go out on a limb and say that the DS is the far superior console to everything else...
no reason why really...nothing to back me up..im just saying cause i can.

hmm now i should list some rubbish about how its better hmm?

a) it fits in your pocket! can an xbox do that? hm?
b) there are only two light. no 3rrods!
c) There are almost no fps's. to me thats a good thing...both in lack of frames per second and first person shooters
d) its got broken sword on it..in your pocket, or SMT: Devil Survivor
e)it doesnt cost the earth and look like a george foreman grill
f) you can play elite beat agents on it
g) or ouendon
g2) or ouendon 2
h) or rhythm tengoku
i) it comes in all the colours of the rainbow..you can colour co-ordinate
j)....no that was the last one...and i feel rather ill for writing it too.
Posted by ei8hty5ive
You points are rubbish but I might agree with ya, the DS is an amazing lil piece of kit!

You would have to be a idiot not to see Sony's was far better. The final design of the wand is what I want to see. Natal did nothing to interest me, I would feel like a right T**t waving my hand about with nothing in it. That sounded way worse than it should have. But cant be bothered to change it.

If they get it right it'll merk the Wii.

Can't beat a bit of Mario but the Wii will never suffice for next-gen gaming.

In answer to CVG's question, I reckon it's too early to declare either one of them the winner. I think Natal wipes the floor with the two other alternatives from Sony and Nintendo in terms of sheer vision; whether it'll go anywhere remains to be seen. As for Sony's motion controller it's no where near enough to make me seriously consider buying a PS3 for that functionality alone; not even close in fact.
