New "broader" PSN to be unveiled

New service "with the backbone of PSN" to connect Sony devices
Sony plans to launch a "broader" version of PSN, to serve as a connection platform for multiple devices such as cameras and TVs, says a report.

Sony's Kazuo Kirai says the service will, according to CNN, overlay the backbone of the PlayStation Network but will be broader and more open. Are you paying attention?

The new PSN will interconnect Sony devices, making it easier to do things like pass images from a camera to a TV, displaying and editing video, storing files and sharing them with others, he says.

A reward system to offer brand loyalists perks such as discounts or premium services was also touted, and the "first glimpse" of the new service "should" be around next spring.

"It's now a matter of what all the services need to look like for each device, and coming up with a rollout plan," said Hirai, according to the report. "It's like city planning here, and we can start small. We don't need to build New York City overnight."

Sony big shot Howard Stringer also said the company was in a position to make acquisitions to help push forward its plans.

Well let's wait and see eh, still waiting on PSN Europe getting up to speed with America. Not so much PSN but the PS Store, it's miles behind Americas store.

I really like this idea as long as the 'brand loyalty' thing won't cost me any money other than what I'd normally spend.

I'd rather just have a generally smoother experience on the one Sony device I have. Can the audience of people with Sony TVs, PSPs, cameras and PS3s really be worth spending all that time and effort on?

Surely the idea is that this will attract people to the platform.

I know that my Sony mobile works with the PS3 pretty well. Unexpectedly showed up as a 'media server' when I connected it to the wifi, can now stream music/films/picture slideshow from the phone to the TV.

As long as they don't expect me to buy a 'Sony PC' to carry on streaming media off that I'll be ok. They are bad enough as it is, but I dread to imagine what kind of proprietry nightmare they'd bring about if they started building PC's.

2/3rd height 3.6" drive bays anyone?

It's all very well and good offering loyalty rewards etc, but I think it might be a better idea to sort out a decent pre-paid system to let people actually buy stuff in the first place.

MS can do it so why can't Sony?

And the American store is miles behind the Japanese store...*sigh*

Dont worry, My Nokia does the same thing. Most high end phones can stream media to other devices on a local network.
I think this will have something to do with the cloud. you will take snaps on a cybershot, and upload them via built in wifi to your PSN account, ready to access from you PS3 or TV.

Your TV will have access to streaming media from the cloud. Maybe even acces media stored on friends PS3's. Any music you have on your PS3 or in the stored in the cloud will be accessible from a Hi-Fi connected to the net.
Then you could access all of this content from your mobile or PSP from anywhere in the world.
