New PES 2010 features revealed

Liverpool striker Torres signs up for the packshot
Konami has signed up the Liverpool and Spanish international striker, Fernando Torres, to join Lionel Messi as a cover star of PES 2010. The firm's released a bunch of new details too.

"Everyone knows that when it comes to football simulation, Konami's PES series is by far the most realistic title available," said Torres. "The new game looks absolutely stunning, and I look forward to seeing myself in action in PES 2010."

Konami has also unveiled some new additions to PES 2010:

  • Enhanced Realism: PES 2010 delivers a pace of game in tune with football played at the highest level. Triangulation of passes and use of off-the-ball runs are key to breaking down the opposition, forcing the player to use the strengths of their team mates to create scoring opportunities. Gone are 'soft' goals that can be used to break the deadlock; instead, only working the channels and the precision play expected of great players will make a difference.

  • Player Characteristics: Key skills of the many players have now been attributed names, allowing users to incorporate them into their play strategy. Cover star Torres, for instance, is renowned for his ability to receive a pass in the penalty area, and to drop the ball to a teammate in a good position for a goal-scoring opportunity. As such, he is labeled a 'Fox in the Box' and Goal Poacher', in line with his prowess in both scoring and setting up goals. Player characteristics are more vividly reproduced by these names.

  • Instant Tactical Switching: Konami has already unveiled its new tactical bar system related to PES 2010's attacking and defensive elements, but can now reveal additional information. Each team has unique settings matching their real-life playing styles. Torres at Liverpool, for instance, will recreate the Merseyside club's sophisticated play and high numbers in attack, their pressing from midfield, strong defensive line, and width across the pitch. For the offense, the default settings support wide attacks and the aim to move in the back of the opponent's defense line. The user can summon the bar instantly during a match to adjust team tactics to enhance their defence or strengthen attacks.

  • Master League: The Master League now incorporates both the Champions League and Europa Leagues in its content, offering a complete season for players to enjoy. Success in the Master League will see players streamed into these competitions. The lure of European football can also be used to attract stronger players to your side, with transfer dealings and contracts now significantly more realistic in their use.

  • Commentary: PES 2010 reunites Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson in the game's virtual commentary box, but in a more effective way than before. The commentary is now more tied to the action, with comments detailing player ability, significant match history and analysis, within a more concise and detailed delivery designed to mimic the presentation of games.

Sounds good!

Not too fussed about online play really. This list sounds good, apart from the return of Mark Lawrenson. Glad they've fleshed out the Master League mode, I can see myself getting this over FIFA now. :D
Posted by heatuk10
people always moaning about online! I play either with my mates or on master league and prefer it over fifa anyday! plus when you used to play PES on the PS2 you didn't moan about online! cos there wasn't online to be picky about! a game doesn't become better because of the online abilitys!
Posted by ensabahnur
one thing thats confused me with PES is how come they got the champions league rights and now the europa league rights but you still have to play as teams with fake names and there's no german teams in there. kinda makes a mockery of it doesn't it?
Posted by joemikey
Good point heatuk, just what I was thinking. The image looks great & am looking forward to the game despite FIFA's strong competition.

They brought back Lawro... fu<kin' hell.

if anyone actually thinks that this will be as good as fifa 10 then they need their head checked

I went with FIFA last year, as Konami failed to deliver a title worth the asking price compared to FIFA. Whilst I think FIFA is good, PES still plays the better game of football in my opinion.
Posted by heatuk10
each to there own! but I know what football game I will be purchasing and it isn't fifa 10! PES feels more realistic and not constraint, think Konami will produce something good this year as its been in development for 2 years, plus if that is what the character models look like then its going to look even better!

I really, really hope this PES is a vast improvement on the last one for PS3. It would be a dream.

I am concerned though as I heard they lost the full La Liga and Serie A license. Does anyone know what the deal is here - what teams or leagues are licensed?

I used to love playing as the fully licensed Italian teams Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma etc.

They promised the world last year and we got shit. It's going to be the same this year, but this time i'm not biting
Posted by HITMANBAZZA
I won't be getting for the simple fact that anorexic spotty boy torres has signed
Posted by budge
Real money currencies instead of 'points'? That's what takes a lot of the realism out of it. :(

Is the legend mode still in too beause that was ace last time?

Even more focus on individual characteristics? Bah. I think they should try to simulate football, not players and teams. Football, a game where players can run in the direction they want, not a game played on rails. I've been a fan of PES since the PSX days (I used to play it with emulators on my PC), but they seem unwilling to fix long-standing issues and focusing on the wrong things.

I want a game where I can pick two random teams from a League I don't know shit about, play a friendly match and have fun. Torres and the Master League definitely come after that.

Basically most of the features shown here are what FIFA introduced into their '08 iteration. I feel that this would be a good addition to the PES series as it works well. After many enjoyable years of playing PES I switched to FIFA 09 last year and don't regret it one bit, I think its going to take some radical changes to the gameplay in PES to win me back but I just don't see it happening. As much as enjoy FIFA 09 I think they need to improve the shooting mechanics as it can be frustrating at times but apart from that it was a solid game.

And regarding the comments about online play, in today's day and age there's no excuse for problematic online gaming. Even people with the shi*iest of connections can enjoy a decent game of FIFA. Maybe when I was 16 and had all my mates around to my house to have a blast on PES it was okay to dismiss the lack of online features, but as is the case with most older gamers that just not possible anymore.

Noooooooooooo! It was all sounding so good until I read that Mark (I'M NOT READING A SCRIPT, HONEST!) Lawrenson is returning! The guy is so wooden and devoid of any excitement and enthusiasum for the game. Just replacing him would have improved the game massively Konami. I seriously hope they have revamp the entire commentary script it's all got so samey over the years.

Hopefully Champions League and Europa are also included in Become a Legend too.

Oh God Konami. WTF.

I was COUNTING on you. I gave over 10 years of my life to Pro Evo in it's various incarnations, but you got complacent, dropped the ball, and EA pulled out a blinder with FIFA 09. Now I play that instead, but I was hoping you would come out swinging for the fences, ready to turn it up a notch afdter taking such a critical beat down last October. EA have implemented full 360 degree control of dribbling, sorted long balls out so they are less 'floaty', and have a new complex physics based system for shooting and interaction when players are jostling for the ball etc. WHat do you give us? Player attributes now have 'names', and more Mark Lawrenson.

You know what Konami? F**k you. Seriously. Come back when you give a damn about the end user. Lazt tw@ts.

I like many others on this topic was an avid PES fan but then moved over to Fifa 09 after years of lackluster PES sequels for the current generation of consoles. I will more likely get both games. Fifa because last years was so well done and I play clubs religiously but ill be getting PES to see if they can return to form.

If the in game animations are as good as that then thats a good start but I was to see a solid game engine. Yeah an improved Master League would be awesome but for me getting the gameplay nailed down is key foremost!

don't judge it until u have atleast given it a try! fifa feels crap and always will there player models look just wierd! PES 2010 is coming and to all the people that jumped ship to fifa 09 don't bother the loyal PES community doesn't want u creeping back!

awww i don't know if i can listen to Mark for another year. i can't stand him!!

Thats fine. Don't like playing PES with the blinkered fanboys anyway! 8)

Konami remind me of failed politicans. Very much like successful politicians, they say the right things, tell us what we want to hear, then when it comes to the crunch, fail dismally and don't deliver.

What I think both Pro Evo and FIFA are failing on is their ability to make a really decent game of football. If you took out all the teams and players and had a basic game of football in either game, clearly no one would probably care to play the games. EA and Konami know this, only too well, and so the actual game itself gets some attention while too much effort clearly has to go into replicating practically every player or team on the planet.

There's only one bullet point I want to read and that's:

The game plays like a real match of football.

I suspect we're probably still over 10 or 15 years away from either game reaching a point when the makers cannot do any more to replicate the game other than improve graphics and animation. Perhaps I need to take a break from football games for two two console generations! Then again, I'm pretty sure Konami and EA will still be tweaking their games, making some elements better and others worse, while creating new problems as they resolve others. While yearly updates in sport games are big money for the developers, they seem to fail to understand, that unlike practically any other game, they really need to be trying much harder because we're all familiar with the sport and know how it actually plays out. Football games have to be the slowest improving games in the industry.

I actually think there's room for another developer to start from scratch and create a game based on the actual sport, that looks and plays like the real thing. A good understanding of the sport, physics and human biology are all that's needed... don't look to ex-EA or Konami staff for such skills though.

I would actually consider boycotting this just because of the commentary, that really needs to change.

In PES 2009 it's only when you turn the difficulty level up to max that the AI really kicks in.

Default setting is way too easy.

At max difficulty I've conceded AI goals that were as good to watch as anything I've ever seen in a real football game. FIFA never comes close. It still feels mechanical.

For all its flaws PES still feels more like real football than FIFA. I'm not surprised that so many are seduced by the dark side ;)

But does it work online? Or will we have another 90% rated game that hasn't been tested when there are more than 5 people online?

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAMBO WEIGH A PIE. I LOVE THAT SONG AND SING IT WITH MY FRIENDS WHEN WE GO CAMPING. SOMETIMES WE PLAY WITH BALLS BUT MISS ALWAYS SHOUTS AT US AND MAKES US PUT OUR SPECIAL GLOVES ON. ONCE I MADE HER A POO SANDWICH.

here we go again ,, konami promising this and that ,, they done the exact same thing this time last year and pes 09 turned out to be rubbish ,, stiff robotic animations ,, no realism ,, players like messi , ronaldo etc ,, can just run at right angles round the whole team ,, just a complete joke ,, konami would be safer making an updated current gen version of pes 5 ,, that game is the best pes ever made , gameplay wise,, the last 2 pes games just havent done it ,, konami need to get it right this time or they will lose even more fans to the vastly improving fifa ,, and what a game fifa 10 is shaping up to be btw !

I'll do what I did last year: try both demos and see which I like the best. It was FIFA last year (and before that my main console had been a Nintendo, so had no choice between them til I got a 360!), but not by much.

To be honest if the differences are quite minor again, FIFA will win out for having working online (though I very rarely play online) and all the proper clubs and players.

PES all the way on the wii though.

How can you say PES plays more like football than FIFA? This isn't 2002! One of the reasons I moved to FIFA was because of the more realistic pacing. Having gone back to PES recently, I stand by this. PES used to play like real football, that was it's main draw. Somewhere along the line Konami decided it would be better if all the players ran around like they were on amphetamins, and now it plays a lightning fast, arcadey game. It's fun, not bad, but it's not how football works. FIFA on the other hand is deliberate, pass and move, create an opening game, and thus much more like football.

Either the PES players claiming it to be more realistic are totally blinkered (as fanboys usually are, that isn't an insult, despite my defection to FIFA I am still a Pro Evo fanboy myself) or haven't actually played FIFA. Or watched football.

At the end of the day, I am a football fan, and as such, I want the game that best represents the sport. FIFA isn't perfect (the character models can be shocking), but it IS the best footie game this generation, and I've played them all.

These 'improvements' from Konami just don't cut it. They need to build from scratch IMO.
