I thought the Wii was supposed to be at least a little bit more powerful than last gen consoles! screenshots tend to not do wii games justice.
Looks a lot better in motion. Should be a laugh.
The wii is more powerful than last gen machines its just that a lot of companies take the lazy route of using existing engines that were initally built for the gamecube (if we're lucky) or 9/10 the PS2 to make wii games. Hopefully High voltage will lease thier wii engine out to other devs and we'll finally get to see what the wii can do graphically a lot more often. I'm convinced that as the Wii doesn't use PC standard style graphics that development houses struggle to get the most out of it. i think most of the devs are lazy. In thoery the wii should be a doddle to develop for as its an advanced version of the GC. So in thory many should already have existing tech that they can modify to get the most out of it.
Its not like the PS3 which is entirely new and non standard. Personally if i was a dev i'd be most happy with the 360 though as there is little diffrerence between programming for it and a PC. ^^ I don't think anything on the Wii looks as good as F-Zero GX did on the Gamecube. Galaxy was close but I popped in F-Zero the other day and it still looks stunning! I am a really big Wii fan but I can't see why the developers including Nintendo aren't getting the most out of the system. Well The Conduit, Little Kings Story, Zak and Wiki, House of the Dead, De Blob, Madworld, No More Heroes, Call of Duty and loads of others say your wrong. Facts are though, a game on the Wii cant really be ported to the 360 or PS3 to gain more sales, as a result whilst some companies will put in the effort to take advantage of the Wii's hardware, other companies will build games with a Wii/PS2 crossover in mind to maximise sales. Its nothing to do with developers struggling(like it is with the PS3) and more to do with lazyness and making a quick buck.
@Tricky_Rich If your opinion of the Wii's power is formed on a low def video of one game 2 years after the consoles launch then where have you been? Why are you not aware of the graphics in Mario Galaxy and Metroid 3? Or do you not realise that a developer will only get out what they are willing to put in. Why would anyone buy a wii? other than people who try and lure kids into their house with it and **** them. I myself have tried this method and i managed to get a handful of kids and a 40 year old fat ****, he wasn't the best **** in the world because even my 26 inch cock couldn't find his hole. So in the end i just ****ed his fat rolls and after that i stuck the head of my penis into his foreskin and then put his foreskin over all that and we swung around the room till his cock ripped off which we then ate with some mash and abit of my nan's colon which i had been saving. **** Wii. Righto...
Moving swiftly along, I'm pretty sure it's down to a couple of things.
First of all, the effort from the developers. We know it's not up to 360/PS3 power, but it is above GC/PS2. To get the most from it, you need a lot of LOD work to enable and disable the shaders. That means a new engine specific to the Wii (since last-gen didn't have pixel shaders). It's obviously far easier to just use an inferior last-gen engine if you're releasing a PS2 version anyway.
The other slightly less important thing is that it uses more system resources to have multiple players on-screen than it does to have the same amount of AI. So going for a party game (even not counting split screen stuff), you cut your CPU cycles by having a party-friendly game. Add to that, in this case, the 4-player split screen and you need to keep polycounts and shader counts down to keep frame rate up. Omega Gangster's on the quick road to being banned...
On subject... when Dirt 2's graphics are reduced to this, the game looks like it'll play no better than Sega Rally! I think Codemaster's glory days of creating exciting rallying are gone. Why anyone wants to 'race' along in a buggy that's slow and handles like a shopping trolley is beyond me. I long for the days of hair-raising, seat of your pants driving through the roads, forests, country lanes, mountain sides, villages and farm lands of Germany, England, Finland, Sweden and Japan. Generic looking tracks just don't create exciting races. RIP McRae series, and here's hoping Rallisport Challenge makes a welcome return to the better days of rallying games. You know, I really loved Rallisport Challenge (particularly number 2) back in the day, but it didn't really set the charts on fire and DICE are too busy with FPSes these days to bother developing another one. It's nice to see someone else though, who appreciated its charms. Most people found it a bit too arcadey, but I thought it got the balance just right and I spent many an evening perfecting it's beautifully realized courses.
To be honest I wasn't slagging off the Wii's power (having already played and enjoyed Metroid Prime 3), it's more that I am just disappointed in the apparent lack of effort put into the Wii port by a powerhouse driving game developer like Codemasters. That is why I mentioned Rallisport Challenge 2, as to my eyes it still looks lovely today. For anyone nostalgic about Rallisport Challenge 2, Check this out. There are a few hi-res images of Rallisport Challenge 2, a pleasant reminder of just how gorgeous it really was! SO DIRT REQUIRES MARIO KART COLOURS AND TONKA CARS DOES IT CODEMASTERS
ITS NINTENDO SO WII DO A MUSHROOM KINGDOM LOOK
CODEMASTERS THATS A PSP ENGINE WITH TOONY EXTRA COLOUR
FUK OFF U WANKERS What the F**K!!!!
Are Codemasters taking the piss!!!! Dirts 2 looks worst than some PS2 games. I know graphics ain't the be all and end all, but they do help :x Who cares how it looks. Codemasters know as well as we do that the bulk of Wii owners are either so casual in gaming they don't care - Or (as in my case) only use the Wii when there's a large group of people drunk at the house - so you can't see the graphics properly anyway.
Serious gamers aint gonna play this on a Wii, just kids, mums, dads and drunks. |
