Fight Night R4 vs R3 video comparison

How the new boxer weighs up to its stunning counterpart
Fight Night Round 3 was one of the most impressive-looking games out; one of the first titles to show off what the current generation of machines could really do. So how does the sequel measure up?

EA's on form because Round 4 is nothing short of stunning, and makes its predecessor look a little on the stiff side, even. We put Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton back in the ring in both games and recorded a single round of face-smashing footage for you to compare. Both are 360 versions.

You'll instantly notice that all the colour tones are more vivid and bright, instead of the gritty hue of the previous game - no doubt the result of an intentional change in art direction. Round 4 is clearly faster too.

But if you pay close attention to the animations you can see Round 4's new real-time physics system in action, and how it effects the way the boxers move and punches land. Movements tended to look the same in the Round 3. In Round 4 you can see fists graze off gloves or sweaty heads, sending punches glancing off in unexpected directions. Mint.

I'm really impressed by the graphics, the animation is superb for a game this fast.

Moving the punches onto the thumb stick and away from the buttons has certainly alienated me from this buying this game... oh yeah, and the one punch win, so prevalent online in the last version, guaranteed I gave up playing it online within 3 games.

Boxing's a nice idea, but ultimately as a videogame it's one of the dullest sports. I know you could make this argument for any sport game, but it really did feel like getting a racing game home only to find one track! Or shooter with one map!! I'd put money on this game having more used copies available within two weeks, than other game released this year. I might borrow this from a friend before he gets rid of it... if I've not got any washing up to do that evening!

FNR3 had the punching on the thumbstick.

ffcoppolla, yes it did, but you weren't forced to play the game this way as you are with the new one. Using thumbsticks for punches or blocks didn't suit me at all. I guess anyone who purchases the new one loves it, not me. I don't want a developer to decide how I play a game.

dont walk into the punches to be knocked the fook out then...

new FN is awesome, loving every minute of it... you really have to change your play when against an inside or outside and their varying heights...

So EA, Ubisoft, etc., contact you at your home asking how you'd like to play a game?

Of course not; most games you play are dictated by the developer.
