Home will be "essential for all PS3 games"

Virtual world is a "long term" prospect, says Sony
PlayStation Home is set to become "an essential component for all PS3 games", says the service's director, SCEE's Peter Edward.

Speaking to Gamasutra (via MCV), Edward predicts that the PS3 virtual world will become an integral feature of PS3 games as the service develops.

"Home is the starting point for PlayStation 3 online, and that's something that gamers are going to expect as more games support Game Launch from within Home," he said. "This will become an essential component for all PS3 games."

Edward speaks as Sony boasts 7 million worldwide downloads of Home, with 3 million of those happening in Europe.

Home users have downloaded over 6 million virtual items, says Sony, including Red Bull's free Air Race game which has been played by over 873.000 users.

Home isn't all about making cash though, says Edward: "For Sony, revenue isn't the main driver for Home. We're in this for the long term." Still, I'm sure they wouldn't turn down our Queen sheets.

the first 3 paragraphs all basically say the same thing in this article. bit pointless..
Posted by collyboy187
and how many of those 7million have uninstalled it. -1 for me at least!!
Posted by flash501
Christ I hope not. I don't think I could be any less interested in home.
Posted by ricflair
Be fair, they changed the word 'component' to 'feature' in the second paragraph!

Just give up Sony, please. Nobody wants it.
Posted by DAEDALUS79
Yeah 7 million have downloaded it, but how many frequently use it. I am one of the 7 million that downloaded it but NEVER used it after that.
Posted by _Marty_
Yeah I doubt it. Face it, many people out there are just gonna wanna turn on their console and play a game...
Posted by splitter
I downloaded it...tried to work out what the point of it was...decided there wasn't one.

Now it is just clogging up my damn hard drive until I get round to deleting it.
Posted by roynluc
Oh no. I do hope not. I downloaded it, played with it a bit, got fed up with it and deleted it.

Clunky system, long load times, inconsistent connection issues. I hope never to have to go back to it again.
Posted by JewJitsu
Same here i've been on it once when it first came out and never been back on it. Fail
Posted by BYDO
Put me down for one of them 'tried it once and never again' comments please.

It's slow, cumbersome, dreadfully boring and the few people who DO hang out there tend to be absolutely horrific.

Sony should stop posting money into this dead horse and get cracking on PS2 backwards compatibility instead - that would actually add some value to the console.

Why does everyone live in the same flat in HOME?
Would HOME not be better if everyone had an individual flat around the dock? That would make it more interesting?
How about being able to take one of the boats out of the dock and go fishing! Yeah fishing it's slow, dull, and hardly anything happens... a bit like HOME itself!
Posted by Mmmmgrolsch
Home is utterly pointless, I don't like it so please do not make it a essential part of my games!
Posted by slothfull9
It will also mean, if the actual Home world gets much bigger, that those of us with 40GB PS3's will have to upgrade the hard drive to fit it all on.

PS3Home was am ill conceived idea from the start and is like everything Sony are doing at the moment (i.e. Making a mistake, refusing to admit it as a mistake and throwing money at it/force feeding it to the people hoping they will change their minds).

What they really need to do is get rid of Home and spend their time and money or releaseing more PS1 and PS2 games on PSN. Cost cut by losing the dead weight/earn more money in downloads. Simple really!

Consensus of opinion here from all us true gamers (hence we are posting on this site) that home is a bit shite! I have downloaded it. Been on it once or twice while waiting for a game to install to HD on my 360. The red bull thing was ok for 10 minutes, no more than that and the rest of the things there are pointless roaming around game areas watching people dancing etc. This will never, ever be a part of my gaming world and I for one will never buy full priced download only games. I want something in my hand for my dosh! Sony really need to get a grip on the home nonsense.

They should just have gone the simple format line, I downloaded it and just could not be bothered after a while so deleted it, Live (although not the same thing in some ways) is so much simpler to use and thus highly functional
Posted by voodoo341
Live and Home aren't even remotely similar, how can you compare them? It's like comparing Windows to Facebook.
Posted by metallicorphan
i hope they dont mean 'Essential' as in you have to use HOME to play the games...because i will stick to my 360 if thats the case
Posted by Sirini
So with Europe Home being nearly as big as NA and JP combined, you'd think they'd give it equal, if not more support.
Posted by lonewolf2002
Looks like Sony aren't listening again and just forcing their crap out.
Posted by roynluc
If they do that, they'll only end up with an aneurysm.
