Ubisoft goes hard for digi downloads

Reinforced partnership with Metaboli planned
Ubisoft will work closer with Metaboli to make more of its games available to download-to-own. It's another tiny nail in the coffin of retail releases.

"We are very pleased to pursue our partnership with Metaboli. This fruitful collaboration will offer users the opportunity to purchase digitally a large range of our most successful games," states Stéphanie Perotti, chief operating officer EMEA.

Metaboli man Pierre Forest added, "There are 47 Ubisoft titles available in the catalogue and they have been particularly popular with our users. Several games including Assassin's Creed, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Prince of Persia, Far Cry, Brothers in Arms, Rainbow Six and the Splinter Cell series have performed consistently well across our subscription-based platform. These games will undoubtedly achieve the same success through our download-to-own model, especially since they will now be distributed in the U.S. market following our acquisition of GameTap."

I wonder how much more successful these games would have been if they'd been released via Steam instead...

It's not a nail in the coffin for retailers.... It's another nail in the coffin for Pc gaming!

For the life of me, I don't see as no PC games in retailers can mean new PC gamers! Mrs and Mrs average Xmas shopping for their son, and go into a games store. There they see only console games. In the past, with PC having children's games and educational games as well as regular games you could attract them - with no PC of anything in games stores I just see it hastening the decline.

I just don't see 10 downloads for every 10 retail sales. I see it as 2 or 3 at best, once PC games are completely removed from stores, meaning a 70% decline in an already 40% smaller PC games market than 5 years ago!
