New Crackdown 2 details

Half original team working on sequel
"Close to half" of Crackdown 2's development team at start-up studio Ruffian Games worked on the original, the developer told CVG comrades at Edge-Online.

"We've got core members from every discipline who worked on [Crackdown 1], the majority of the design team, and, depending on whom you speak to, some of the best coders and most talented artists," said creative director Billy Thompson.

"We still maintain a really strong working relationship with [original developer] Realtime; they're our neighbours in both personal and professional relationships, and we like that," piped in producer Jim Cope. "But leaping to our defence, in a sense, we firmly believe we're the right people to make Crackdown 2."

Elsewhere in the interview the Ruffian pair reveal that the second Crackdown takes place in the same locale, Pacific City, "but further on in the timeline."

"From an environmental point of view, you probably would look at it as being an entirely new map," Thompson told Edge. "We've altered a great deal, and think people who enjoyed the first game are going to be really pleased when they enter this one. And we've made sure the gameplay's altered significantly."

As for the crazy mutant shadow seen in the E3 teaser trailer (see above), Ruffian's being coy: "We're not going to support one theory over another - we're just excited that there are so many opinions," said producer Cope.

"It's hard to say without giving everything away early on, but it's about how well the AI get around the environment. And it's looking pretty good right now, I've got to say."

Crackdown 2's due next year. Can't wait.

It's this part of the quote that gets me excited. I think we can expect to see enemies with similar agility/strength to the agents. Awesome! :D

Must be weird, two developers in the same small city, both of whom have worked on the same Game and now there competitors.

I have faith though that Crackdown 2 should be as fun (if not mre) than the first one.

Long live the Scottish Devs :D .

It's great that Scotland has some good development houses, since DMA split into Realtime Worlds and Rockstar North. Almost enough to make me proud :)

My experience of the first one was weird. Got it with the 360, wasn't impressed. Went back to it after a couple of months, absolutely loved it. Still do.

I agree with Black Mantis that I think we can expect serious competition from enhanced criminals. Possibly mutated because of unofficial process side effects or the combination of power and drugs.

Hoping this can do the original justice. Would be nice if there was a bit more to do at the endgame though, since after you beat the last boss the only options were run around a more or less empty city collecting orbs. A few randomly generated side missions would make those runs a bit more interesting.

Sounds good to me loved the first one and i'm gonna pre-order the second (something i never do. Go Ruffian!

They'd have to make sure they keep them interesting by making sure they're pretty hectic though. Lots of mayhem and all that.

Yep Im proud of them too. Crackdown was great, it seemed a bit iffy with the Halo3 beta but turned to be really good.

Anybody who went orb hunting though will be traumatised by that orb sound.

I really enjoyed the first Crackdown, so am looking forward to a second game, although strangly I found looking for all the green orbs, and trying to get to those hard to reach ones by leveling up your abilitites more fun than progressing the story. Still a great game though.

lol at the "best coders" remark seeing as the 1st Crackdown was a bug ridden game crashing mess which many people couldn't finish as the game would not even load.

I never had any trouble with it. It was a cracking good game from begining to end. More please!

Never had any problems myself, could be down to the fact I bought a year or so after it came out and they patched it.
