Xbox Project Natal is actually a 'new console'

Natal to arrive with re-launched, re-branded Xbox, claims bold report - UPDATE
Xbox 360's innovative motion camera, Project Natal, will arrive alongside a re-launched and re-branded Xbox console.

That's according to a bold report on US site 1UP, which claims that the 'new' Natal Xbox will be a slightly upgraded 360, featuring similar hardware but able to support better looking and performing games.

The new box is said to be repackaged and rebranded in order to target at a mainstream audience, and of course Project Natal will come as standard.

"Make no mistake, we wouldn't be talking about the sort of hardware leap we've seen with Xbox (or most other) platforms in the past, and we're not talking about Microsoft ending one console cycle and starting another," says the report, which suggests that game publishers will be able to support both Xbox 360 and the 'new' console.

The report is backed up somewhat by comments from Xbox strategy boss Shane Kim, who said last week that "the launch of Natal will be like the launch of Xbox 360. It's going to be that big."

UPDATE: Microsoft UK has given us a standard, "we do not comment on rumour and speculation".

Its not going to be a completely new console - highly likely to be a 360 slim though, and with rebuilt, newer internals and a bigger hard drive there is a good chance it will run more smoothly than the original 360. The question is, will it contain a Bluray drive as well?
Posted by masofdas
First, So if Xbox Natal is a console which can play better looking games, then a Xbox 360 won't delovpers just makes for the xbox natal and not 360 , so we will all have to upgrade or will natal games work on 360 but just won't look so could? We need more info
Posted by AJB123644
Well well well this is interesting news. A redesigned Xbox eh? Wonder what it will be capable of and what it will actually contain considering it is to be designed for the mainstream audience. Could be interesting to see what will happen to be honest.

I think the biggest question here will be whether they will fix the RRD.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
so you'll need a new natal 360 to get the best out of future titles?!

a bit like the saturn RAM pack, except much crueler.

that'll please existing users. they can upgrade the same console again for the 2nd or 3rd time.
Posted by pp82
There is no way it will come with a blu-ray
Posted by GTCzeero
So are devs going to be splitting their attention between the current 360 and this newer version? Won't that end up with less games for the current one if there's a better performing version available? Will we all have to buy a new 360 to play these new games? Too many questions!

I'm not sure about this one Microsoft, reassure me.
Posted by altitude2k
Agreed. Not with Zune videos on the way, there's no need for it.

Good question. While we wait for the answer(s) I'll continue to dramatically increase my Xbox 360 game collection thanks to the second-hand, and the odd newly released, deals available online. I suppose should the worst case scenario come to pass (i.e. older Xbox versions won't be compatible - though I doubt it personally), then there is a large existing games library for the Xbox 360 which I can sink my proverbial teeth in to.
Posted by dodgy1
Lets hope this one is at the very least reliable.

And anyone interested in Natal & still owns an original 360 (and wants to keep that) is faced with the prospect of going out & re-buying the hardware all over again simply to upgrade, obviously at full price.
Posted by Black Mantis
I doubt this will be a dramatic change to be honest. I believe there'll be a redesigned 360, but I doubt they'll risk splitting the user-base by releasing games that won't work with existing 360's.

If you watched the E3 conference, you'll remember at the end of the Natal demo, the guy said Natal will be bundled with the 360 when released.

It was five minutes past three in the morning as she laid there in his arms. She took one deep breath before she closed her eyes and tried to get some sleep. She couldn't. She touched the arm that was draped across her naked body. He's real. He's really here with me. Come sunrise, what was she to do?

It did not take her too long to picture out what would happen when they wake up to the bright morning and take everything in... that the night was not spent with the ‘official' partner. She could imagine his face when he'll try to kiss her and find out she's not the girlfriend. How awkward it would be when she'll start picking up the clothes strewn around the room, slowly picking them up one by one as he watch her do so. Maybe it would be a good idea to leave before light hits the space...

She tried to lift the arm that had been everywhere on her body thirty minutes ago. When he felt her move, he pulled her closer. Great, now it's more comfortable than it had been. She was too weak to even counter that move. Her legs felt wobbly and she was exhausted. She decided to leave at five in the morning, by then she'll have the energy she needs to leave.

She fell asleep the moment she closed her eyes.

She felt something on her cheek and her lids fluttered as light met her half-open eyes. Oh my God! She over slept by three hours and now she'd have to do what she had imagined earlier. How she wished she'd just be invisible at that very moment. "Good morning." He told her with a smile, totally unexpected and it made her pull the covers on her face and pretend that she did not hear a thing. Who was she kidding. She returned the greeting from under the covers. She smelled her own morning breath and she knew that hiding under the covers before speaking was the perfect thing to do. Waking up next to a new person was not something she's done before and the morning face and breath were not helping. She was naked under the covers and her mind worked fast on what to cover herself when she rises. A towel was draped on the chair next to the bed and so she grabbed this and wrapped it around her. She had to leave.

She hurried to the toilet and looked at her disheveled face looking back at her from the mirror. God, she was a mess. She washed her face and combed her hair. Then she saw the shower and decided to take one. It took her five minutes to pull herself together and as she stepped out of her bath, he was waiting for her. She smiled awkwardly and looked down. What could he be possibly thinking at this very moment? In her mind she could see him tell her he's driving her home (while she's still wearing that small towel barely covering her body.)

He went to stand in front of her...so near that his presence made her feel all wobbly and nervous. He cupped the back of her neck and his lips went to hers. The next thing she knew, the towel had fallen off her body and she was kissing him back. She was confused and at the same time aroused but she did not want to think about anything more than this very sweet moment. He carried her back to bed. He looked deeply into her eyes as he held her in his arms and said: "No regrets..." And she smiled as she pulled him close to her for a deep kiss...

As a long time gamer, I think producing a "Natal 360" five years after the original makes sense.
A new more powerful Xbox "Natal" based on the 360 should run the huge back catalogue of current generation titles straight out the box (something the current Xbox 360 and PS3 unfortunately lacked) and these older titles may even take advantage of the extra power themselves with a Live update. I've seen Burnout Paradise being played on Natal at E3, which shows I will be able to buy the Natal unit as an add-on and use it on my existing Xbox console & games (until I choose to upgrade) & that sounds like a great idea.
A backwards compatible Xbox "Natal" with a great launch line-up using the Natal interface and Live service, would be well worth investing in, in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to next year (or this years Xbox show) to see what it can do, until then it's back to my 360. :D
Posted by Obscure_Metaphor
will you lot calm down, they already said natal would be compatible with EVERY xbox. this will just be a slight performance upgrade, probably with a bluray drive, 320gig HD and some other tweaks. not enough to exclude current users, because then they would be shooting themselves in the foot. remember, they make money on games, not hardware. the longer the life of your current console, the more games you buy, the more money they make.

natal will be compatible with every xbox, because from day one, they'll have a huge user base, ready to buy natal enabled games to sit along side their current collection.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
do pc devs make different versions for all the different types of graphics card out there. of course not.

but then they have their sliders...

does that mean existing 360's will run new games at a lower whack?

It wouldn't surprise me if they do this, increase the processor and GFX card speeds and available ram.

The Dev versions already have twice as much memory in them as the standard versions.

Does anybody else think that Natal would make a potentially bigger splash if it was released with a new generation of console?

Mind you, Ninty managed to take the world by storm with a re-packaged Cube, I suppose.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out, that's for sure.
Posted by Black Mantis
I doubt it, as a proper new console is not needed or wanted at this time. I think MS want to get a larger slice of the market with the 360 and Natal would be one way of doing that. They seem to have struck a chord with the mainstream press, so this would be the cheapest way to do it by using existing tech.

For the next Xbox you'll probably see a more powerful and refined version of Natal.

Has nobody thought of the endless mindless games we are all going to be getting with this. The wii is a piece of shit for most of us and this is going to be the same. Endless mini games and the like. :x
Posted by svd_grasshopper
no existing 360 owners want to re-buy their system.

no punter wants to pay that much for a "casual" experience.

if anyone was looking for motion they would just buy a wii for cheaper.

natal would have been more successful from the get-go. its trying to be something its not, too late in the game.
Posted by StonecoldMC
1UP has been on a downward spiral since the Team got disbanded through the lay offs by Ziff Davis.

I still listen to their podcasts (Garnet is still a scream) but they have got a few things wrong recently so I wouldnt hold any of this as Gospel, far from it in fact.
Posted by ParmaViolet
I really don't see Natal in the same light as the Wii and the Wiimote.

Natal has far more scope than just as a motion controller, so I suspect you will see different types of games - as opposed to just different control methods.

Don't get me wrong, there will be plenty of throwaway titles that'll use it - but, there's plenty of those for a standard controller too.

I'm really looking forward to it - a lot of the developers seem to be singing its praises at the moment.

:)
Posted by steve_2003
I agree, the new interface makes for a whole host of new ideas. You can always use an existing controller for movement and the Face and Voice recognition for interacting with characters. 8)
Posted by mandlecreed
Will there be a fifth segment to the red ring for when Natal breaks down?
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Considering that a BR would need to use BR discs in order to realise it's full potential might that not be a waste of hardware investment considering all the older Xbox models that would be unable to play BR?
Posted by Mark240473

Didn't we already have an RTS for 360/PS3/PC that used voice recognition well? It seems to me like the technology is already available with or without Natal. :?

And face recognition? I can't see the use of it really. I mean, how many people are going to be playing a game at any one time?

And it isn't like I'll just be able to turn up at your house and the 360 will chirp 'Hi Mark, how's it hanging?'
Posted by The_KFD_Case

By Jobe! That's it! MS has struck upon a way to verify you are in fact the gamer that purchased the game. Facial recognition? Check. Voice recognition? Check. Retina scan? Maybe.

or you could wink in a virtual flirt with an online t-girl.

the possiblities are endless.

honestly this will be shite. almost useless for games as we know them.

it will be mini games like pop-up hippo, you batter them down with your mits.

cue faggy advert and cringey music, wholesome teens having fun, bumping into each other with abnormal smiles.

like shig says, you need a device in your hands with feedback and trigger buttons.
Posted by steve_2003
E3's early demonstration showed the facial expression and tone of voice can be recognised, this I think separates Natal from other devices, and it's this coupled with or without an Xbox controller, that could make games such as Grand Theft and Oblivion a whole heap more interesting. :D

It reminds me of the sex scene with Sly Stallone and Sandra Bullock in the film 'Demolition Man'.

In a word, unstatisfying.

Chinny reck-on.

Maybe a redesign visually if they really want the mainstream, as the 360 looks like shit. And an internal rejig that finally gets rid (not lessens the chances) of the RRoD would be great.

But I just can't see the graphical power of the console being improved.
Posted by vulcanraven01
Highly doubt this report is true.
It would be one of thew orst decisons ever made.
If anything, more than likley we'll see a slimmed down, cheaper 360 design aimed at the Wii market.
Posted by Adam81uk
Speaking as someone who is not really interested in Motion control games or face and voice recognition im pretty concerned in the way that the industry is going. I just want to sit back after work and relax and unwhind playing a game, not worrying if a cough or a sneeze will kill my character, not upsetting a little boy on screen if i swear and having to consul him and not havin to talk and have an in depth conversation just to progress a game. Nor do i wich to rearrange all my furniture just so i can control an imaginary ball in my living room or to have to do military rolls just to avoid my enemy in an FPS.

The fact that Microsoft are making such a big deal of this makes me think that most of their in house projects are going to be specifically geared towards Natal.

Sounds like they are following the lead of the DSi - adding a camera to the current hardware and making it an updated version of the gen console rather than a new one.

The improved componants will probably mean that certain games that have pop-in & slowdown, like GTA4 won't suffer from it, rather than being radically better.

Blu Ray is pretty likely as at the moment that is one of the strongest arguements for spending the extra cash for the PS3 over a 360 (apart from irrational red-ring fear.

Sony will undoubtably release the PS3 slim with thier motion control thingy bundled as standard too.

A lot of people are writing off Sony & MS's motion tech prematurely, forgetting that both consoles are way more powerful than the wii and capable of producing more than just arm-flapping shovelware, I can see some truly awesome motion controlled games coming to both platforms
Posted by yerbluesjohn
The re-packaging and re-branding is a no-brainer and makes perfect sense. But an upgraded system? Big mistake. Way to split your audience, Microsoft. It's so dumb a move, I don't believe it will really happen.

Natal itself still sounds rubbish to me anyway. It's typical bandwagon-jumping Microsoft, shouting loudly about a meh product and falsely claiming to be at the forefront of innovation (a la every IE and Windows launch).

I'm surprised consoles aren't routinely upgraded half way through their lifespan in view of making them slighly more powerful and improving graphics. As long as old games still work perfectly this could surely be a way of generating a few extra sales, whether in terms of old customers upgrading, or new being enticed with a slightly better console.

As previously pointed out, PC games look slightly different depending on your hardware but are always the same game. Why shouldn't a console owner several years down the line have a chance to effectively upgrade his console. No one's forcing you to change your Xbox, but if you choose to, games will look slightly better.

While I'm an out and out hardcore gamer I have absolutely no interest in Natal. But better looking games... absolutely. Or a slightly higher framerate... definitely. And why not have Blu-ray version too. Games of course wouldn't make use of this there must be 360 owners who don't have a separate player or PS3 that would relish the opportunity to start buying hi-res movies.

God I'm sick of this s*it, no one cares about my shoes.... £17 they cost me.... who's gonna stump up the cash for them, no one thats who, £17.... gutted.

I can't see it being a completely new console, something similar to what they did with the Premium to the Elite. Then bundled together with the add-on.

I've been considering upgrading to an Elite at some point, mainly for the larger drive, so I might as well wait for the Natal version.

If it is a new machine in a lot more respects, they may offer a sort of upgrade purchase scheme for those already owning the current release, making it cheaper to buy than a new one.

We'll just have to wait and see, and I strongly doubt we'll see Blu-Ray on this or any future MS console, MS are making too big a push in their 'on-demand' service.
Posted by Mark Hayhurst
I see grasshopper is back predicting the future again.

N0b
Posted by Mark240473
Another potential pitfall for MS is that, by announcing a better machine than the current model, they could potentially lose sales for the current model, just because some folk will now wait and see what comes with the new model.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
if the future is pertending, instead of doing. then im wrong.

this peripheraless peripheral is a massive fail.

the brain need the hands to be holding something for it to be immersed with whats on screen. its feedback (not necessarily rumble).

A la the rumored slim PS3 and speculation that Sony is keeping quiet about it in an attempt to clear out stockpiles of the current PS3 before letting the cat out of the bag.
Posted by PTG
@vulcanraven01

A slimmed down 360 aimed at the Wii market? Well that would be pretty stupid seeing as the Wii market already have Wii's.

Also, it wont have a bluray drive. It'd be too expensive to license and would put the cost of the console up.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
its obvious that there will be 360s bundled with Natal. MS would be stupid not to. Whether it'll be improved in any way is a completely different story.

Chances are NAtal will come out by itself for between £70-100

and they'll be a Natal/360 bundle for £200.
Posted by Mark240473
Precisely. Saying that, the PS3 price-drop has been rumoured since the dawn of time.

And for a fair bit of that time it may have been nothing more than wishful thinking!
Posted by BOYD1981
The only thing that could possibly make me buy an improved 360 is if as well as the optical out for surround sound they added the 3 jacks like you get on PC soundcards, amps/dolby decoders aren't really priced too reasonably, but you can get a 5.1 pc speaker system pretty cheaply, and it really does make a difference for games.
In fact, I'd even be tempted to switch to PS3 if I could just connect my speakers up to it, because atleast then for the added cost I'm not having to buy a decoder or blu-ray player seperately.
Posted by horngreen
First off why did somebody have to bring up Blu Ray? It won't be in the "new" 360 I'm sure. The Natal camera alone will drive the price up I'm sure so why add to it with a Bru Ray drive? That and MS seems set on downloadable films and with the 1080p on demand thingy coming out I don't see the point in jacking up the price with a BR drive. I wonder how many of you READ the article. This sounds like a mild improvment and in no way will the existing install base be effected. They are not dumb enough to expect us to buy new consoles to play games with slightly improved graphics. It would kill them in the eye of the consumer. Quit jumping to stupid conclusions. People do this even when a smaller version of a console comes out like the PS2 slim. "Will it be able to play the original games?" Ugh!
Posted by KMakawa
That 1UP reporter needs to be kicked from the staff team, for feeding the world such ridiculous Hype.
I myself asked a Xbox 360 staff member at E3, if Project Natal was going to become a new console. He clearly stated No.

Stop feeding us this shit please.
Posted by YCshinobi
I'm not too big on the idea of Natal and the whole no controller... control.. thing. I'm looking to get a PS3 anyway so... screw you.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
must be something about the PS3 that jut sucks the Intelligance and compaosure from your body. The above poster is a case in point. Usually a man of sound postage begins to turn as he declares that he is thinking about getting a PS3.

I think not much has been said about ps3s motion tech because its a complete non event. Its taken them 3 years to come up with a clone to the motion+ That doesn't even attemp anything different and Sonyboys that have spent 3 years bashing motion control to death now have an almost identical periphal to the console they hate the most. Its obvious they'd be tight lipped about it.

MS on the other hand completely upstaged Sony with Natal so as usual cause for outrage and its even more motion orientated and potentially more casual than the wiimote is they're bound to be in a furour about it.

And the wiifans are a little intimidated by natal, but most guys with a wii tend to have a second console which is 9/10 a 360 So why the hell would they care.
Posted by Jensonjet
I think you underestimate peoples love of improved graphics. Do you consider all the PC gamers who routinely upgrade their graphics cards dumb for doing so?

If Microsoft geniunely believes a slightly upgraded 360 could bring in more profit I'm sure they have or will condiser this. Personally I think the only reason no one has done this to date is no one cares to find out if it would work economically. Personally I could see this working, and if it did, Sony would inevitably follow. I wouldn't be so quick to write-off an upgraded console. Before this current generation of consoles the market had hardly changed. Anything goes these days.
Posted by YCshinobi
Intelligance? and compaosure? :?

Me thinking of getting a PS3 has nothing to do with this news or the motion control wars, the Ps3's game line-up just looks more appealing to me now than before. I have no interest in project Natal or an upgraded 360. That is all.

if they are making an updated 360 one thing has to be fixed, and thats the noise coming from the fans and the dvd drive, thats the one thing making me buy games for my ps3 instead of my 360, damn thing sounds like a jet engine
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Aye, the Xbox 360 is far from quiet and the DVD drive's grating sound was initially disconcerting to my ears. That said, I find turning up the volume on my 42" LCD TV helps counter-act the background noise. It's not the most sophisticated of solutions but it does the trick.

strangely, my 26" hdtv does the same.

though the noise doesnt bother me, im much more concerned about the heat, installing to the HDD usually helps.

my ps3 is a little noisy too, and i find that more irritating as its not a constant buzz, but a clicking of sorts from the drive.

Do you know which chipset your Xbox 360 came with? I verified that mine has the Jasper chipset by examining the voltage output on the back of the console. While it does give off some heat at the vents when it's been on for a while it's nothing too alarming and I have it in a well ventilated entertainment center. Hopefully that should help increase the lifespan of the little beast. :)
Posted by steve_2003
Okay, everyone...Let's see what develops over the next few weeks, shall we?

TeamXbox:-

"Today, I can tell you that I have obtained the first details on the next Xbox (info that we'll reveal in the coming weeks) and that's why we can confirm that the rumor reported by 1UP is false. Microsoft is NOT launching a new, upgraded Xbox 360 disguised as a new Xbox in 2010 (although built-in Natal technology is a possibility for a new edition of the Xbox 360, similar to the Elite or Arcade flavors)."

"It's not our intention to tease you, but for now the only thing I'm going to say about everything I heard regarding the next Xbox is that it won't launch until a certain type of television becomes more widespread because..." 8)
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
I've been wondering what chipset mine came with. I got the Halo Version and 'touch wood' so far i've never had a problem with it. Generally it feels like a fridge when you touch it while its on.

Its a noisy lil beast but not a scratch on the original xbox that sounded like a helicopter was taking off. But i've always been a fan of noisey machinery.
Posted by Cernunnos
i think its Xenon, all Halo models are (its a beauty, not ugly as some people seem to hold as a delusion), arent they? 203W
is it the JASPER or the Falcon thats 75W?

its on top of my ps3, its rightful position. it was hard to balance them, but the food-chain must be maintained.
even though that would be awesome, its a lie. its in a very well vented place, ie middle of floor.

lifespan? pah! my 360 should be undead by now. its been run very hard for over 2 years, and i have yet to have a single problem with it. so im not concerned. besides, they arent expensive to replace. :)
Posted by ledickolas
They don't want to tease and then they do.

The teamxbox forum is speculating some new fancy 3d tv technology for next gen. I seriously hope not, I haven't got myself a hd tv yet, I really don't want to have to get a new TV each generation. Might as well get a bloody new PC every 5 years.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
I think its a thing of beauty, definately worth the extra couple of quid considering its been running sweet as a nut since the day i bought it coincidently it also likes on the shelf above my ps3 next to the wii.

I guess the limited ed ones are made of tougther stuff. It is a spartan after all.
Posted by Black Mantis
If it is 3D tv's they're waiting on, they better hope they retail for around the £300-£400 mark. That's the point when tv's tend to sell well.

LG are releasing some this year, so maybe by the time Natal does launch, the prices will be around that mark.

Personally, I reckon they're talking about HDTV. There are still a lot of people using SD and these are the kind of people MS will be targeting with Natal
Posted by le_don
I believe that the Natal will be a cheaper priced xbox 360 with the camera to compete with the wii. Perhaps not even with the standard 360 controller in the package. The original 360 will easily work with the camera and natal, as it will remain as the more powerful xbox console. FACT.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Good to hear. If you take a look at the voltage sticker you should be able to determine whether it's the Falcon or the Jasper chipset. The Falcon is 12.1V-14.1V and the Jasper is 12.1V-12.1V from what I gather.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
If memory serves correctly the Falcon is 175W while the Jasper is 155W, or there-abouts. Plus the Jasper utilises a 65nm chip as opposed to the old 90nm.

it sure is, but one could almost argue its an aqcuired taste. lol

mine cost the same as a regular pro, but i didnt get the 2 games that came with the original package (but those werent anything id want in my games library), besides, the play&charge kit was bundled in it.

i think the must be tougher. the controller has taken some abuse, and still works fine, wile one that came with the PC adapter is somewhat... strange after being dropped on the flor only a couple of times.

the jasper is that green, huh?
last time i checked (long ago), the jasper was only shipped in core and arcade packages. but if my Halo ed. Xenon breaks down, i'll make sure to get a jasper.

a bit offtopic, but do those of you with noisy 360 drives have your console horiztonal or vertical? i always used to have mine horizontal because i was worried about knocking it while it was on and buggering my disc up, but then the dvd drive starting buzzing and the only thing that fixed it was standing it vertically.
but yeh, it generally is just a very noisy machine (both the console and PSU), but my PC is much louder and i've become so used to it that i can't sleep properly unless it's on.

i knocked my last 360 over twice, with NFS: Most Wanted in it. on the same day... the game still worked after the first time, but but after the second none of the kings men or horses could put humpty dumpty back together. i always kept it horizontal since then, as long as there was space to keep it so that is. maybe you have loose parts?
