'Do something new, Bungie and Infinity Ward', says Gearbox

"What else have you got?", asks Borderlands dev
Randy Pitchford, boss of Gearbox, has praised Bungie and Infinity Ward for their work on Halo and Modern Warfare, but asks "What else have you got?"

"I keep waiting to hear what Bungie is going to do that's not Halo," he said. "Those guys are amazing, right? They walk on water! And the same with Infinity Ward. It's like, dude I'm totally psyched to get my Call of Duty fix every year, but you guys are amazing! What else have you got? Can you give me something I haven't seen before?

"The folks that are innovating need to be rewarded so that the folks that are making big bets can take that risk. It's too big of a risk for Infinity Ward to do anything but what they're doing, because there's too much value and there's really big scope for it," said Pitchford.

What would you like to see Bungie and IW do next then? Apart from Halo 4 and Modern Warfare 3?

Catch 22 situation.

I too want to see more than more Halo or MW from Bungie and Infinity Ward but then again im more than happy with more of what there doing right now.

Mmmmmmmm?
Posted by blackholes
Problem is IW are already working on a sci-fi shooter.

Just focus on your own games Gearbox, and not worry about your rivals, kaykay?

ps; borderlands is fail.
Posted by ricflair
So Gearbox are run by a Jeff Spicoli are they? Or is it Bill? Or Ted?
Posted by almanac2015
I actually agree with this. MW2 is no doubt going to be fantastic and consume a lot of my time, and I'd be happy with a MW3 announcement (which would be expected), though I certainly wouldn't complain if they tried something else.
Same with Bungie.
Posted by Black Mantis
Bungie already stated they are working on something non-Halo, I doubt we'll see anything of it this year though.
Posted by BYDO
Yeah! And whats with Polyphony digital doing all them friggin GT driving games? They should be doing more zombie FPS shit with hot semi naked ladies with added RPG elements. Think outside of the box PD!

*palm/forehead

Until Gearbox gets to the same high standard of Bungie or IW then I think they should keep there opinions to themselves and let these developers do what they do best. i.e Halo and Modern warfare.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
how about they trade franchises for a gmae.

Be interesting to see a IW Halo Game or a Bungie made COD. Might make me interested in the series again.

Something completely different would also be great. How about bungie actually making RTS, Halo originally was going to be one in a similar vein to Sacrifice all those years ago. so its not too much of a stretch.

I agree as well. To a degree. With Infinity Ward, the Modern Warfare franchise is new and fresh imo, a clear departure from normal Call of Duty. I'll happily play another 2 or 3 MW games.

With Bungie, I totally agree. That company has become synonymous with the Halo franchise and it's a tired franchise imo.

But then that's the industry as it is today. Bioshock would've ben perfectly fine as a standalone game imo, a sign that developers dont need to create long, contrived trilogies and can just create a unique and engaging game.

On the other hand, I'm certain I'll buy Bioshock 2 myself...

i'd like a sim-shooter from IW. even though they said they dont want to do one, i seen the video for MW2, climbing a frozen mountain with pick-axes. looked ****ing tedious. the fact this CoD is packed more with cheesy cliche`d hollywood near miss moments doesnt thrill me.

will still be amazing, but i prefer the clincalness of rainbow 6.

****ing sci-fi, just seen that link. will be missing out on that. love shooters and dont care if its one of the best FPS makers... hate sci-fi!
Posted by JuiKuen
Neither are 'amazing'. Just like 'Epic', they are one trick ponies who just make the same crap over and over. Even more annoying, they all make the same type of games, except 'Epic' prefer to make their games stand out by using broken mechanics. Oh yeah, unless its 3rd person like GoW.

I don't find these companies who make the same games all the time being any good. People like to try and shoot Nintendo down for making the same games but that shows how shortsighted they are. They make a range of genres types, even if they do use their mascots a lot. Capcom are another who are good at making games across a variety of genres.

Western devs are less ambitious on the whole..

It's a funny ol' game offering an opinion on an opinion.

I agree with him but it doesn't stop me wanting Halo Reach or MW2.

I'm looking forward to Borderlands too.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
ah stand alone games. I remember them. And a lot of games that have been left open for sequels that never happened. Anyone remember Clive Barkers Undying? Fantastic PC horror Fps they did before Jericho. Left it open for a sequel. then it never appeared. Then they made Jericho.Which just wasn't as good.

Or Paris Hilton.
Posted by ledickolas
Yeah I agree with you to a degree, however Nintendo is centuries old and has years in the videogame industry, Capcom is a veteran too and are more guilty than either developer for milking. Both companies also are much bigger and have a lot more development teams, they also outsource (Metroid, Bionic Commando) and publish games. Capcom in particulare has about a million variations on smacking someone in the face.

Bungie and IW are relatively small fry and are still developing, you'll see other stuff from them eventually I'd wager. What's wrong with a developer concentrating on one genre or one game anyway? As someone else said, I don't see anyone having ago at Kojima, PD or Turn 10. Sometimes it's best at what you're good at (or in Kojima's case, just please stop, I beg you)

Gearbox publish the Brothers in Arms Series, Bungie publishes Halo and Infinity Ward publishes Call of Duty.

Until Gearbox actually release Borderlands and Aliens I think they can all be accused of sticking to what sells.
Posted by Mappman
Well if IW or Bungie ended up doing as much randomness as Gearbox - who seem to be the hired help of the dev community whenever someone needs an expansion pack - I'm not sure we'd ever get the quality from them that we do currently.

Frankly, I'd wager Gearbox and most other devs would kill for an IP as exploitable and profitable as Halo or Modern Warfare. Also, whilst on the surface I'd agree with the sentiment that it'd be cool to see what else these devs are capable of, on closer inspection, they'd more than likely create little more than high quality re-skinned versions of what we're already playing.
Posted by SAeN
Finally someone tells them

I'd love to see something different. Im losing my love for cod and halo
Posted by The_KFD_Case
The man makes sense, yet ironically he treads the same path (GoW 3 anyone?). Still, that doesn't diminish the value of what he's saying. As StoneCold put it, it's a "catch 22".

I recall Bungie doing other stuff way back in the early to mid-90's. They made some very entertaining "end of the world, barbarian hordes come to the rescue" fantasy games in "Myth 1 & 2". They probably look horrid by today's standards but boy was it satisfying hearing the squishy sounds and seeing limbs go flying after your barbarian warriors went berserk! :)

do something different?? y!? if thats what we love!.gearbox are just jelous

Holy shit Undying was awesome... I liked that second sight you got. That person hanging at the entrance, the paintings depicting decapitation, etc.

Sweet, sweet game... still got it kicking around at home :)

I couldn't disagree more. If anything it seems many Japanese developers stick with the tested, tried and true mechanics over and over and over again (Nintendo, while hailed by some as innovative, which they may be from time to time, are certainly guilty of rehashing the same old dishes near ad infinitum). Just like some Western developers.

On a side note, apparently there is a greater anthropological propensity for Western cultures to encourage new ideas than in some other cultures (which is not to say that conservative traditionalist forces don't exist in the West, because they do). Valve - love them or hate them - is but one example of a Western developer that seemed to come out of nowhere with it's ideas and later on in-game physics followed by a very popular online distribution system.

Er... Sorry Randy, but you just make FPS games?

Why don't you try something different yourself? Start small... I dunno, maybe you could start by releasing your games when they are originally scheduled for, you know, just to warm up.

Yeah :D :D :D !!!

Suivaloom is back. You need to knock some sense into the rabid Fanboys that have been coming on here recently Suiv, they need someone to lead them, I think that someone is you!

Im tired of Halo series, its the same everytime. As for COD infinity ward are best off sticking to what they know best. Halo3 really isn't all that good online, its abit shit in my book. But I see why 13 year unhealthy kids get off on it. Perhaps thats what I hate about it, some little American shit talking like they got summit stuck up there arse and have been kicked in the little peanuts?
Posted by Jensonjet
For me Infinity Ward can do no wrong... yet. I agree with the article that these guys can do much more than they're showing us right now. I would love to see them handle more genre first person shooters. I geniunely think they could make a better zombie game than Valve. A better sci fi/horror than id, Epic, etc. I'd like to see them handle other combat from Vietnam to Futuristic space marines! I also think they're more than capable to taking game that we normally see as third person adventures and making decent first person versions.. any setting; space, fantasy, modern, historic, etc. And if they released sequels every two or three new games, updating the game engine with each release, we'd never get bored of sequels.

I want to see a two player co-op off road 'warthog' racer from Bungie, one player drives the other is on the turret.

Where you can do the offline story events co-op split screen, or via online. Then you can jump online for some competitive races with 12 'warthogs' (24 players) with vehicle and environment damage. Where winning allows you to customise and upgrade your vehicle and turret.

 :P
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Likewise. It's a shame that we never got to see what happens next. the guy washes up on the shore and you find out the mad cultist guy isn't dead and then.... nothing.

It was like bioshock without the massive sales. definately way ahead of its time in terms of storytelling.

I concur.

I would like to see IW maybe trying to make a less linear game.

This is not a dig at them in any way, I would just be interested to see how they do.

Five years of Brothers In Arms games gives Gearbox zero right to actually throw this gauntlet out there.
Posted by BenJy!
You could apply the same incentive to many game companies in todays market. It's a very generic time for gaming with VERY few games taking a dive and trying to dish out something refreshing and original. But hey, if it sells than it sells.

Kudos to this.

I want to see new IP's and new ideas.

I disagree with Gearbox. If something ain't broke don't fix it. Infinity Ward are good at what they do, lets leave it at that. If they do want to create a new IP in the future I'm sure they'll do it with the same attention to detail and style as they have with their C.o.d games, especially Modern Warfare but right now I am happy with Infinity Ward and what they are presently doing. The same goes for Bungie and the Halo games.
