Modern Warfare 2 to get online subscriptions?

MMO-style service detailed by supposed Activision survey
Future Call of Duty games could come with an MMO-style subscription service, granting subscribers extra options and early access to map packs.

UPDATE: Infinity Ward has responded to the rumour here. UPDATE ENDS

That's according to a mysterious Activision survey doing the rounds on Destructoid, which mentions a CoD service that would "enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements."

These "enhancements" would include early access to expansions and betas, exclusive character skins, game modes, enhanced stat tracking and "support for competitive play."

According to the survey, the MMO-style service may come with a monthly fee attached, or it could come bundled with a copy of Call of Duty for an extra fee.

Hopefully then, if this service ever comes to light, it's simply a bonus for Call of Duty players willing to pay for more content... and not just another way to make money from the community.

Early access to betas and expansions? I'd expect them for price of the subscription.

Activision: in a word 'no'

in three words 'go **** yourself'

I'm not going to start paying subscriptions on top of my Live account.

Seems exactly like a cheap marketing ploy.

Oh and stop reporting ******** speculation as news.
Posted by flash501
I really wish that Activision didn't own the cod franchise , the more popular it gets the more ways they will think of ripping off us gamers. I bet eventually paying a subscription will be the only way to access the online features.

I've always stuck by the likes of Activision with their charging for additional content like map packs, but this seems a bit too much like milking it. Come on, with MW1 the game and map pack came to about £60, that is plenty to pay, i am starting to feel like i'm getting screwed a bit with the additional content.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
slags, they are already over charging for the game itself. ****ing RRP £54.99

i'd never pay a sub. its the main reason i got shot of my 360.

if it came to it i'd boycott the full game. seems like they are whoring it out anyway.

would the pc versions still be a subscription?! i know there are gimpy subscription games on pc, but they usually get their DLC for **** all.

activision are parasites.

and there's the sly dig at xbox 360,you just cant help yerself can you Grassboy?
Posted by nottsville
Even though i usually disagree with a passion anything you say, i'm with you on that one, good sir!

This is balls. I think they just know they are onto a multi-million selling game and they know people WILL pay out for this!

Ahahahaha.

Bahahahahahahaha.

I see no problam with this, it's no different to going to the doctors
Posted by almanac2015
As EA become a liked publisher, it appears Activision is going to do everything it can to convince everyone that it's a complete ****.
Subscription to an online FPS? It can **** right off with an idea like that, I'm not paying for exclusive game modes. And I'm sure I'm not the only person who says if this happens, I won't be buying.
Posted by nathar
Good grief, what a stupid stupid idea. Its because of these types of decisions that games like this tend to be the most pirated.
Posted by Random Hangman
MW2 is pretty much my most anticipated game this year and the first MW is sitting in the Xbox as we speak (I also have it for PS3) but...

There is no way on earth that I will buy MW2 if Activision go ahead with a stunt like that. Additional maps? Yep, I'll bite and fork out the £5-£10 for them, but this? No way!

I will cut my nose off to spite my face over that!
Posted by svd_grasshopper
sly dig? its a fact. LIVE is sub based. i would never pay a sub.

if an MMO-type/subscription based CoD came out i wouldnt go anywhere near it. wouldnt enable them.

meanwhile IW must be sitting around shaking their head. CoD would be nothing without them and these whores activision are ****ing around with it. i hope it falls flat on its face if they try it.

IW would be better breaking off and making their own game. **** the franchise.

Ive being saying on here for a while now that Activision are the worst of the Publishers out there.

The way they treated Brutal Legend, Fear 2, Prototype when they dropped them was terrible, then they see that Brutal Legend looks pretty good and they then sue Tim Schafers ass.

If only I didnt want to buy MW2, damn you Infinity Ward and your truly great Games!

Stupid, flamebaiting subtitle CVG- Why on earth would an Activision survey (note- the PUBLISHER, not even the developer), which would be a small subset of the earliest stage of game development, be fed into changing the feature set of a game that is only a few months from completion?

As it happens I do work in software development, but I don't think you really need to to figure out that there is no way in hell this survey has anything to do with Modern Warfare 2, or any title that far through development.

Had you asked "MMO features to be added to future CoD titles" or something similar, that would be fair. As it stands you'll have every commentard up in arms about a feature that probably has nothing to do with Modern Warfare.

Sort it out please.

I just commented on this over on Eurogamer (videogangs), where I said I'd happily support something like this as long as it was robust, well supported, multiplayer only and good value for money.

I'm not sure this would work on Xbox live, where people already cough up cold cash, but as a PC title it would certainly be adopted by the competetive hardcore, as long as there was enough to it to justify the pricetag.

COD is the most dull, boring and generic FPS ever invented, I wouldn't even bother buying the game let alone paying a subscription to play its overrated multiplayer mode.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
^ crimbo.

and the multiplayer in CoD4 is class. it aint overrated.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
i'm giving you 3/1 that this happens.

You know what. I bet the meatheads that love these games so much'll pay it too.

bwahahahahaha!!
Posted by adgr19
if this is true, they can go **** themselves. This will be just the start. Speak with your wallets (or purses) people!
Posted by RumbleThunder
TF2 is around 392084 times more fun than COD, and just look at the developer love that gets.

Pathetic cash in.

F*CK YOU ACTIVISION!

This is exactly why I've never purchased any DLC. Sure, I would love to have extra content for the games I love, but once DLC becomes very popular, that'll be the start of games getting smaller and smaller, with DLC required to own the full game.

Imagine all future games starting off as small as say this interim Gran Tourismo. A basic game engine with very little content. Then over the months, the publishers/developers release DLC packs for maps/tracks, or cars/guns... maybe even game types or features. If this is to be the future everyone purchasing DLC is edging us towards this.

Buy it preowned, then you're not actually giving them any money.

From what I'm reading here, it sounds like the COD series is trying to do what MAG is doing on PS3.

If so, this could get very interesting.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Not interested in the least. Thanks, but no thanks Activision.
Posted by KMakawa
For the record, this is not aimed at Modern Warfare 2. Thanks.
Posted by lordjamie4
no way will i pay for this. they should make it like halo 3 where u pay for extra stuff
Posted by sonic_uk
I think thats the most ridiculous idea I've heard for a long time. Why the hell should I pay to play the game online properly, when I already pay my Xbox live membership and will buy the game? It's just yet another way of ripping people off, just like the majority of dlc floating around out there, most of which could've been included in the full game, but was left out for the purposes of ripping people off later to make them pay more money to download it.

As for Cod, to say I was looking forward to this game with much anticipation has got to be the understatement of the century, but this stupid idea has really put me off. Sure, it sounds like you can still play online but won't have access to certain features and maps which is an absolute liberty after spending £45 on a game(the cheapest preorder I can find and for that price it isn't even a special edition - an absolute rip off in itself seeing as every new full price game out there is always priced at £39.99 or less). And why should said maps be avaliable first for people paying this so called 'subscribtion'? Surely if you have to pay to download them anyway you would think the devs would not hold back on this front, for their own sake of making money? It's absolutely nuts and to be perfectly honest a f&*%ing p@%£take to just about every Call Of Duty fan out there. Whoever came up with this idea is a f&%£ing idiot. End of rant.

Woo, calm down there guys! I agree with you, but, at the end of the day, this is a rumour, based from a rumour, based on a game undefined, just the series, based on details not specified exactly.

Just don't go worrying too much yet lads!

Although, COD:MW2 having a higher RRP especially when the consoles are now relatively old, is a joke. 55 quid? We know we wont have to pay that, but we'll probably end up forking out 45 quid. I payed 37 for WAW, so why has it gone up? If you expect this to be the biggest selling game of all time, you don't need to charge extra for you.
Posted by ted1138
So true. They should print this on the back of every new copy, I'm sure a lot of people will see the light and stop buying these games. Thank you China for opening my eyes, and saving me £54.99 too. Your a real gent* and no mistake.

Sonic, please stop going over your head. This will not be on Modern Warfare 2, it is too late to be added in such a late development stage, it would surprise me if they are just mopping up bugs, and then putting it into disc production now ..

Also guys, please take note that this is a survey, ..Certainly does not mean that it will happen. I feel that CVG have twisted this slightly.. and some of you readers dont understand it fully, therefore you start calling it a rip off etc..

THIS WILL NOT BE IN MODERN WARFARE 2.. final time saying that.
Posted by Jensonjet
KMakawa, the anger or upset isn't specifically aimed at Modern Warfare. I, and I assume others, are looking as this as an idea the publishers would like to introduce with games in the future.

We all know the industry ideally wants access to our money on a regular basis. Microsoft already managed to get us to pay to play online. We know on the PC there are monthly subscription games, and I think anyone's anger at the content of this article is because they can imagine the same happening with regular games.

Microsofts charge for Live was the start, the second stage has been paid for DLC, and the final stage will be a monthly subscription to individual publishers or developers. Sadly the PC market has already shown they're willing to pay monthly for a game. If the industry gets its way the days of just buying the hardware and the game will be gone for good. Maybe it's inevitable, but there's no harm in attempting to fight what will ultimately end up a gaming tax.

Right on the money, Jenson.

Personally I'm quite content to raise the two fingered salute and smile sweetly at developers and publishers that would charge for this sort of thing. I can go without, no problem. They are the ones who *need* my, and others', money. Keep pushing, corporate lapdogs. See how far it gets you...In to the shit house that is.

Why dont you just do this on the ps3 if you have rather than xbox

Activision the new EA?
remember when everyone hated those guys with their annual release of dead popular stuff... :0)
Posted by Jensonjet
With the future income generated from Modern Warfare 2, and Activision's insistence on turning themselves into such an unpopular publisher, I wonder if Infinity Ward will end this partnership soon! Infinity Ward don't need A$$ivision any more. They have proved themselves more than capable of creating critically-aclaimed, financially successful games, and they're respected by gamers. I'd really like to see them develop more franchises. It's not hard to imagine them becoming a powerhouse like id, Epic or Valve. I think they're more than capable of competing with those guys.
Posted by marcofarlio
As much as people say they won't pay for a sub, it is inevitable that they will. I'm guessing most people here love the COD series so at least half of you will buy it. If you can make money out of something you sell it.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
Guess again, bub. I mean it when I state that I won't pay for it. I'll just go without; I'm okay with that. There's nothing "inevitable" about it. The customer has the ultimate business power: The financing. Luckily for companies the customers are often scattered and not organised; when they do from time to time entire industries can be toppled.

I agree with KFD Case. As much as I loved Modern Warfare, and will no doubt love Modern Warfare (Infinity Ward have now stated there's no subscription fee attached to this game), if future Modern Warfare's become subscription I'll happily jump ship. I already refuse to buy paid for download content (and perhaps in some cases miss out). I resent paying for Xbox Live, but in this case I don't have a choice as there isn't another console I care for. But with individual games, none are so valuable to me they're worth paying for monthly. Subscriptions may work well within the PC environment as PC owners are ready and willing to pay far more for their entertainment in terms of hardware and it's continual need for upgrading. Gaming, like anything in life we put a value on. And for me that value stops at the cost of a console and the price of a game. For me it's a cheap form of entertainment, and often extremely flawed form of entertainment too! I have never seen or heard of a game that would have me care to pay monthly to pay it. The industry and it's products really aren't that special!

I hope you're right friend, but you can understand the anger and fustration shared by just about every gamer on this site judging by the comments on this page alone let alone every serious gamer out there. I hope this dosn't make it into MF2 and at this late stage I agree its looking unlikely, but its still a stupid money making rip off scheme thought up by a moron. Lets hope this tactic is not adopted by publishers in the future.
