Left 4 Dead

Hands-on: Seven months later
Friends, at last: we have a game in which you can kill a man with a medkit. Remember, Left 4 Dead's hordes aren't strictly zombies: they're people with crazy-rabies.

One shot will rip a limb clean off, but they can survive a few close-up thwacks. And every weapon and item - including medkits - has a melee attack. Indeed, the four-player co-op format led to an emergent mini-game Craig and I discovered: we're calling it Zombie Tennis.

Select the most humiliating item in your inventory, stand either side of the last remaining zombie in a horde, and whack him back and forth between you until he collapses and dies.

Hilarity - and longevity - is added by Left 4 Dead's delectable blend of animation and physics that controls how a felled zombie falls. Namely, that he sometimes doesn't do so in any hurry.

They stagger, gibber, flail, lurch, spin dumbly, groan, bonk their head on a wall, stumble, trip and tumble into a broken heap, their bloodstained mouth finally relaxing from its rigid scream of incoherent anger.

The comedy value of this - even when you're not prolonging it with Zombie Tennis - means you spend as much time laughing as yelping in fright. This is a part of gaming's brave new future that we can get excited about.

The standard zombies are easy to toy with, and there are thousands infesting the murky countryside, headlamp-lit cornfields and abandoned country homes that play host to the one of four mini-campaigns we played.

It's harder to humiliate one of the 'special' zombies: Hunters pounce rapidly, Smokers can trap you with their tongue, Boomers blow up at the first opportunity, and the Tank... don't touch the Tank.

If you do manage to play 'Special' Zombie Tennis, you have the added satisfaction of knowing that it's probably a human player you're victimising. The near-perfect AI will happily play these roles - or those of any Survivors needed to make up a team of four - but while you'll probably only want to play as the Survivors with your friends, or with strangers with good Steam Community stats, anyone will do as the Infected.

We plan to leave those slots open to all-comers when we play - having acerbic, repugnant or incompetent players in those roles only adds to the fun.

The 'Special' zombies are at a disadvantage anyway - the game is crafted primarily around the Survivors, and balanced so that an average bunch should usually make it through most of a campaign without dying.

Not all the way, though - an average bunch of players will usually be wiped out towards the end of the final map. That's intentional. Each campaign builds towards a spectacular last stand at the end of its fourth sub-map, where the survivors must hold out against an epic influx of zombies, both regular and special.

In the campaign we played this time, that meant holing up in a farmhouse until the military arrived, brain-guzzlers pouring in through the cornfields and forests outside. We died just moments from salvation, but that's how Valve like it: they feel nearly making it is the most compelling experience.

This game really is going to be something special!

Is this coming to 360 or PS3? After spending an entire day at a PC I really don't want to sit at yet another desk to kill zombies!
Posted by StonecoldMC
PC & 360 to satrt with, you may see it on the PS3 but you'll have a long, long wait.

Deffo picking this up for my 360. One of my most anticipated games this year.

I wonder how many hours Im going to lose playing this game?

360 aswell. Which in the end makes me torn on which to get, the inevitable better PC version or the 360 version were i can sit on the couch. Decisions decisions. :(

Definitely a game I am looking forward to.

This is one of those games I'm getting tingles over. There aren't many of those about at the moment!

I'll be getting it on PC because I like to be up in the action rather than 10 feet away from it on a settee feeling comfortable.

I understand the whole 'I've been at a PC all day at work, why would I want to do that when I get home' thing - I reckon companies should replace their PCs with 360s and let us use MS Office from a couch. Just a pipe dream.

PC version for me, because that's where I play online with my friends and because it will probably be out first on PC (Steam releases usually happen before retail). It looks amazing and I'm really excited for this game.
Bad news though lads, I just checked Wikipedia and it has it slated for Q4 2008... Was it just me or had any of you heard this would be out around Summer? I'm devastated. :(

Please tell me this game is NOT first person. I HATE those games. Is it 3rd person?
Could someone let me know?
Cheers.

I can't wait for this a definite buy for my PC. Also if anyone can't wait for this and has Steam and half Life 2 I recommend Zombie Panic Source a great free mod with similar gameplay.

360

Yep, this game's going to be legend.

Hope it's 4-player split screen. Probably not but that would be even better.

I've waited forever for this game... Steam it to me now!
Posted by timestops
true because we all know resident evil 5 will piss over it from a great height.
Posted by Ic4rus
yeah, that could happen if they weren't two completely different games and you weren't hanging on to repetatative, uninventive, un-thoughtful, re-hashed gameplay. **** off console tard

What the **** has Resident Evil 5 got to do with anything?

Left 4 Dead: Four player co-op FPS,
Resident Evil 5: Singleplayer 3rd person survival-horror action.

They've both got zombies, but that's where the similarities end.
Oh, and both games are (most likley) going to kick ass.

Edit: Woops, Ic4rus beat me to it

I wonder if zombies can climb or use elevators? If you're in the right place you could be practically immune to them or at least very well protected(Since they can probably climb towards the top of the building on each other), plus, if you shoot down lots of zombies at one place they're corpses will form walls which make it harder for other zombies to advance.Or how does that work out in this game?Am i hoping too much? :)

Being something of a zombie freak I've had many a conversation online and off about scenarios like this, the general concensus of opinion usually revolved around bodies turning into ramps into your stronghold rather than walls. Like you I'm interested about how this will pan out in the game.

Jesus I sound like an anorak of the undead....

In any case im really looking forward to it.At least the developers have started from the right place: gameplay.Everything else is secondary. That's how thief started out which grew to have one of the best atmospheres ever in a game.Best thing is it will have Havok physics, which will enable lots of interesting options for creating blockades :)

My mate said they might make it so people on steam can play other people on 360 in left 4 dead

Its gonna rock!
Funny that people seem to think that the Resi 5 developers are anything like a match for Valve :D
They should have a developer fight, where each is controlling a massive war machine of their own design
Valve would win, using a huge robot made of tables, cupboards, Alyz ragdolls and thrusters... lots of lots of thrusters :D
