Resident Evil 5

Review: Gunning for a piece of the action
We still remember the first time we played Resident Evil. The then-impressive live-action intro. Our first steps into the deserted mansion. The creaky door-opening sequences. The first sighting of a zombie chewing on some bloke's face. It was a masterpiece of tension and fear. While Resi 5 is a very good game, it's not the Resident Evil we've come to expect.

Like Killzone 2 it looks amazing and that's one of the reasons you'll love it. From dusty town roads, steaming swamps with moody tribesmen, temple ruins and obligatory research labs, every location has been lovingly crafted.

Yet despite it being the most realistic-looking Resi game yet, it's just not scary like previous games. It won't make you feel uneasy in a dark room, or make you jump out of your seat with shock tactics. And that's part of the problem.

Chris Redfield aggressively kicks in doors, dives through windows, uppercuts enemies in the face, blows stuff up with rocket launchers and shreds mutants to bits using massive gun turrets.

You wander into a new area and one of the Los Ganados-style (RE4 'zombies') enemies spots you. He points your way, shouts some stuff and a group charges you. Scared yet? No. You've got a very loud shotgun that will explode heads.

Resident Evil 5 is an action game from start to finish. Whether or not that's the game RE fans want is a personal question. Ammo is plentiful, guns are powerful and enemies explode with so much gore that it never gets boring. It feels like Capcom's attempt at a Gears of War-style title.

The addition of a co-op partner, Sheva, only aids your sense of security. There's no-longer that feeling of being alone in a horrible place. She's always there to help you. You occasionally end up going down split paths where one player provides cover fire from afar as the other has to activate a switch.

Just before your character dies you enter a 'dying' state. It's a bit like the equivalent of being shot down in Gears of War. You can't shoot or perform any actions, only limp towards your partner who has to give you a revitalising thump in the chest.

Under CPU control Sheva can be a pain in the ass. She doesn't pick the right gun for the situation and often neglects to shoot the most threatening enemies. She'll waste long-range rifle ammo on close-up enemies while using her pistol to shoot long-range. She'll also use green herbs before you need to.

You're also in control of the items she holds via a fiddly menu. Up, down, left and right on the D-pad serve as quick select buttons. But you can only organise which items (usually guns) go in these four slots during mid-mission menus - a pointless restriction.

You can't choose how much of your ammo you want to transfer to your partner either, it's all or nothing. Another human player jumping into your game, which can be done online or offline at any time, makes RE5 an easier if altogether better experience.

The second half of the game basically turns into a straight up Hollywood blockbuster. For no reason (that's made clear if there is one) enemies suddenly gain the ability to use guns just like you. The environments suddenly fill with cover points and you've got to grasp a cover system that's far inferior to Gears of War.

We don't get the logic behind these enemies either. They can run, leap over fences, pilot boats, shoot guns and do wheelies on motocycles. Yet when they get within a few feet of you they insist on shambling like zombies just waiting to be shot. It's inconsistent.

Keeping the restrictive controls that don't allow movement while aiming is silly. Capcom says this retains the tension and being able to strafe while shooting wouldn't be in the spirit of the Resi series. Right. So motorbike-riding, gun-shooting enemies, and duck-and-cover shooting is? Mmm...

Context-sensitive melee attacks are rubbish - you should be able to batter an enemy in the face whenever you want, but you can only do it when the game randomly says so. Paths are constantly blocked by obstacles that, in real life, would pose no problem to the average man, let alone muscle-man Chris Redfield.

It tries to be RE4 so desperately that it comes across as a suped-up version. Enemies act mostly the same, set pieces, animations and even some environmental assets look near identical. That's both good and bad. RE4 was awesome, but nothing in RE5 feels new.

Yes, we've bitched plenty, but don't get the wrong idea. RE5 is a good game. But when the sequel to one of the best games of the last generation fails to live up to its predecessor, it's hard to hide the disappointment.

It's like Capcom was undecided in what it wanted RE5 to be. It breaks many of the series' traditions, yet tries to hold onto elements of its heritage that are either dated or don't fit with the style.

Resi 5 is an action game that you'll enjoy. But Resident Evil 6 will have to do something very different to shake up the franchise, again. Luckily, Capcom seems to know this already.

It sounds liek a massive let down, but hey, its Resi 5, i'm still going to get it, mainly for the co-op, there is nothing better than blowing the heads off zombies with a friend.
Posted by TezChi
Great review, it pretty much confirms what i already thought by playing the demo. I am a big time RE fan and to me RE5 is a REAL disapointment. I dont want some sun drenced GoW rip off with bad controls and bulging necklines FFS, I want RESIDENT EVIL!

Looks like I'll be sticking with the amazing Dead Space.
Posted by Black Mantis
Too much like 4... As I've never played 4 I'm gonna go ahead and add 1.0 to the score :)
Posted by CVG Gav
Be sure to play RE4 though! It's a classic!
Posted by DAEDALUS79
Im disappointed after a 3 year wait that the game isnt the perfect sequel i longed for; however, much like Silent Hill 5, i will buy Resi 5 and i will enjoy the game, even if it will never see the heights of its predecessor.
Posted by BYDO
Co op should have been a side story in my view. A real shame but still a must buy for me. :?
Posted by TezChi
The thing is RE4 still had, at least in many parts, a "Resident Evil" feel to it. This, judging from the demo, review and trailers etc, looks has it has NONE of that classic feel.

I thought for example that Silent Hill 5 was very good despite the weeaboos crying that it wasnt made bt Konami. It had the SH feel and look, and played well despite a few shortcomings.

RE5 will be the first ever RE game I do not buy, and that includes the survivor games.
Posted by Mark240473
You know, I had my doubts before any of the reviews surfaced. Looks like Capcom have sold us out to the new 'Gears of war' brigade. Unfortunately, millions will buy this in their droves and continue to ignore the far superior Dead Space. Ah well.
Posted by l87ry
I want a return to classic resi; never thought RE4 was a patch on RE1 or REzero on the gamecube as it wasn't scary like they were.
Posted by Mark240473
Out of interest, what did you think of Silent Hill 5?
Posted by TezChi
God I hope your wrong, I really do. The thought of people buying this just because of the name and ignoring the INCREDIBLE Dead Space is a sickening thought.

Then again the rabid "Gears of War Brigade" as you put it, will buy anything like this nowadays.
Posted by Black Mantis
I'm still building up my fear tolerance before I purchase DS!
Posted by infamous76
dont believe everything u read buddy, buy the game and i swear to you - u will LOVE it.

after all the negative comments by people on the forums and the racist allegations crap (and i am a black man myself) i was very fearful for this game, but i can say it is a GREAT game. And yes IT IS BETTER THAN BLOODY DEAD SPACE. what an insult to TRUE gaming fans to even compare the two!!
Posted by roger4000
just about sums up my thoughts as well. i will get it but what a shame. i would rather have a resi 1,2 & 3 remake in the same style as 4.
Posted by Dajmin
@TezChi and Mark240473:
Of course they will. Even if the other games had been crap and this one was a shambling monstrosity of bugs and nonsense, RE4 being so good is enough to sell it.

And you can see the mindset examples in this thread as well. Couple of people said they'll buy it anyway. Skip what everyone agrees is a great game (I haven't played Dead Space so I can't say) and go for a mediocre one simply because it's part of a franchise you like. That'll make the developers think they've gone in the right direction and they'll make more like it.

So you only have yourselves to blame. Demand more for your money. Only buy the best and make them listen to what you want. You have no other power over them.
Posted by roger4000
am i missing something, do you have this already or are you just going off the awful demo?
Posted by ensabahnur
why, Dead space is a fantastic take on survival horror. whereas Resi5 looks and, from whatever review preview or demo players comments, sounds like its trying to be an action game.
i certainly won't be buying Resi 5, haven't bought one since Code Veronica on Dreamcast and couldn't be bothered with 4 after playing it for 10 mins, but i'll rent it just to see if my demo experience was correct or not. if its good then it'll deserve a place in my collection alongside Dead Space (which is about one of the few games this gen i actually enjoy playing through a second time).
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
somebody might if they have a chipped 360. It got leaked a couple weeks back so i'm told.

I'm going to get it because if it being like resi 4 is a problem then it can't be that bad.

I managed to pick up Silent Hill 5 from ASDA last week for £27, and i t was worth every penny. Definately underated, the feel of it the story, the monsters and the fact it keeps you feeling uncomfrtable from the moment you start to finish. ITS SILENT HILL! definately deserves at least an 8.
I think the studio that did make it deserve extra marks for managing to make it slightly more combat orientated but not sacrifice what makes the series great.
Posted by bevoboro
Yeah, what a huge insult that would be to true gamers :?: (what the hell does that even mean). What a stupid idea, comparing one survival horror game with another one :?
Posted by Sinthetic
the more i play the demo the more i love it.
i'm buying it because it's a tonne of fun, loads of replay value. hell i just want to finish the main mode and get all my shit upgraded and go around blasting with infinite ammo.
add on mercenaries mode and all the collectible costumes/figures etc and i am in heaven.

yeh the AI of my partner is worrying because i enjoy solo games more than live link ups etc,,, but there lies the challenge. i am positive with 2 people who are awesome the game would be a walkover.

it's going to be incredible but decisions will be split.
Posted by CrippledHooba
That is crap! Putting a game down because its too much like resident evil 4! WTF! Gears of War 2, God of War 2, they are exactly like the original and they've got scores over 9. BULLS***! Resident evil 5 is completely different. Huge improvement on graphics, completely different setting, and omg the controls are the same which if i can remind you everyone loved in re4. Your so full of it CVG.
Posted by o Raging Bull o
Thats the problem though aint it,it just goes to show all the fancy next gen tech dont mean shit.

Im gonna let this game go by the wayside,no way is it worth its money, and if it ruins the memory of one of my fave games,**** it.
Posted by philgreaaaaaaaat
Well Famitsu gave it 38 out of 40 so i'm getting it as I have more faith in their verdict as opposed to a 'jump on the negative bandwagon in an attempt to come across as having more journalistic integrity' brigade.

Plus this is based on the PS3 version so the 360 version, which i'm getting, will obviously be much, much better.

And Dead Space rules.
Posted by Sinthetic
and yeh, dead space is amazing. i'm sure everyone has seen my comments about it in other threads. i doubt RE5 will be liked more than DS by myself and some others.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
The whole moneysworth thing makes me chuckle with this game. The game is retailing at 29.99 in most places. I was going to get it before anyway but knowing that it'll be cheaper than the **** all else thats out this friday is even better.

Question to y'all that aren't getting it does this mean you are going t osave your cash and get madworld next week instead???
Posted by sweatyBallacks?
Well...that pretty much confirms my decision to not buy the game, having played the demo. Kudos to CVG for the honest review and not being blinded by the franchise name.

It is insulting when developers of great game series like Resident Evil and Silent Hill decide to screw their fanbase and go chasing the mass market dollars that a dumbed-down, more action-orientated game affords.

I don't think Resident Evil will ever reach the heights of RE2/4 and we'll likely never see a Silent Hill as good as the masterful Silent Hill 2.

I think Dead Space is the new survival horror king.
Posted by ensabahnur
I think that Capcom should take a look at whats been said on this game and when they go to make the next one add in some different controls for those who want it original and for those who want it to evolve. and if they're gonna stick to big outdoor sections with action orientated gameplay i'd suggest changing the name back to Biohazard as it'd be more apt than Resident Evil. the original always gave you the feeling you were trapped in a house (with evil in residence, hence the name) and even the 2nd and 3rd and code veronica to an extent gave you a claustrophobic feeling of terror. i can't see that happening in a african village whether your funneled down some alley or not.
Posted by ukdruid
im not surprised about the score tbh, it had to get atleast 1 or 2 bad scores out of all the great reviews its been getting and its still gonna be a day 1 purchase for me because for me its still RE and i love RE.

Im all up for the changes RE4 and 5 have taken due to the somewhat overcrowded zombie infested games out there and yet still to come.

so all the nay-sayers can hush and let us loyal RE fans enjoy whats sure to be a great addition to the RE library
Posted by SICARIUS1
I dont see how being similar to re4 is a bad complaint.
although i dont like the sound of that cover system.

does anyone know if the merchant is in?
Posted by CVG Gav
No merchant. Just an inventory screen.
Posted by _Marty_
So what's the cash for?

As for this review... That's it
<toys out of pram, pre-order cancelled>

I jest. I'm fully expecting mixed reviews for this game. I wasn't taken by the demo either. Until I played it co-op. On the strength of the co-op alone I'm getting this Day 1, definitely. In fact, I don't intend to play it single player if I can at all help it...

Yes, Dead Space is an awesome game, one I love dearly. The control scheme is head and shoulders above Resi 5s too. This doesn't mean that Resi 5 can;t be enjoyable.

I enjoyed Resi 0, and this garnered similar scores.

Changing the subject somewhat, for thos eof you who like you're horror game music, check this site out. Found it earlier and immediately DLed the music to Dead Space. Awesome soundtrack.

Hmm, did I just break the rules? Might have to edit this post if I did... :?
Posted by Nick33
I like how the review says the game is to much like RE4 as if its a bad thing. No one said COD4 was to much like COD2, or Gears 2 was to much like Gears 1, or Halo 3 to much like Halo 2. Yet RE5 is singled out here and on Eurogamer for the same thing. Even though it has online co-op and online mercs mode not present in the previous game. It seems to me RE5 has been put on the chopping block for some reason, it started with racism, then controls, and now people are bitching about game length and zombies on motorbikes.

Game never stood a chance, luckily its ace and these reviewers wouldn't know a good game if it cut off their head with a chainsaw.
Posted by ensabahnur
but Resi 4 was a game released 4 years ago. this is a next gen game thats just aping a gamecube game with fancier visuals and added co-op. with 4 years to develop you'd think they could have came up with something fresher.
Posted by Deadlock64
I love it, just love it, when people say look at reviews like this and call them "honest". A statement like that is such a load of garbage. Reviews are a matter of opinion, there is no review in existence that could be evaluated as "honest". But, I guess in this case, every good review of this game means the author is blinded by the franchise name, right?

No.
Posted by CrippledHooba
Thats what I was trying to say. I totally agree!

And also God of War 3 is looking like its gonna have the same type of gameplay as the original and that came out years ago.
Posted by mightyles
I dont normally comment on here, but I have to say I noticed some incorrect information in the review. They say you cannot rearrange your inventory mid game, and can only do so after each mission. Try pressing X (on the 360 pad) whilst hilighting the item you want to move. That should do it. At least, it works in the demo.

Personally, I dont really agree entirely with the review (review read a bit too much like a resident evil fan boy's perspective, rather than looking at resident evil 5 as an individual game itself), although some parts of the game sound a bit shonky -- No merchant?? Cover system? Hummm. I guess I will be able to make my own mind up on friday when the game comes out.

Just for the record, I bought deadspace at launch, and really liked it. Its one of the few games I got all the achievements for.
Posted by dewd457
This review is pathetic. Im sorry but what were you expecting resident evil 5 to be exactly?

Capcom scored a winning formula with RE4 and i wouldnt expect them to go suddenly revamping the series already, this was what I was expecting re5 to be just like i was expecting gears 2 to follow the same formula as its predecessor.

Saying that the game is too much like re4 is a negative is quite ironic given the fact that re4 was brilliant, there were barly any complaints.

Why do reviewers seem to expect every game that appears nowadays to be revoloutionary and ground breaking.

All im actually seeing in this review is wah wah controls wah wah AI.
Posted by Mappman
I thought the demo was absolute cack and I deleted it before I even got beyond the back yard of the first shack you find yourself in. The controls are incredibly dated and that Sheva or whatever her name is looks like she's been based on some dreadful Nuts Magazine-friendly "babe" from an action film starring Ice Cube.

They dropped the ball big time with this one, and I'm certainly not stupid (or rich) enough to buy it just because its part of a franchise which used to be brilliant.

Oh and contrary to what the review says, the game does look gorgeous, but that's hardly a reason to buy a game is it? If that's what floats your boat might I suggest Dragon's Lair or Space Ace; they also look great whilst featuring an infuratingly antiquated control scheme...
Posted by ginsin
Well, I absolutely loved Dead Space and went through it 4 times. It was definitely my GotY.

But I'll still be buying Resident Evil 5. I haven't exactly gone through the game, but I'm not sure if I'm going to agree with CVG's overall point of view. I honestly don't see the ability to not be able to move and shoot as a gameplay flaw, at all.

I understand the criticism about the game turning more to the action side. But meh, doesn't bother me all that much. You're not going to get a similar game to RE 1-3 nowadays, from any developer. All I want is a fun game to play, with a decent single-player.

Oh, and if CVG are moaning about some technical issues... Maybe they should look at their own site first. ;)

Why is 'too much like Resi 4' a bad point? resi 4 was like THE best game ever. What's wrong with it?
Posted by Solaris
Not a bad score, also the main complaint seems to be because its to much like RE4(fantastic game in my opinion),ad in the co-op and is a must buy for me :D By the way CVG is becoming more like EDGE  not that i mind......
Posted by splitter
EuroGamer gave this 7/10, IGN 9/10...I think CVG's score is probably going to tally the most with how I feel about the game going by the demo.

Good to see all the Dead Space praise in this thread. We need to keep up the word of mouth campaign for the rightful 2008 GotY!
Posted by robbie111222
Their is no denying that resi5 carried such a high tag in the form of (expectation)....WHY?

Just look at resident evil 4, completely re-defined the survival horror genre, in every aspect.

Amazing story, creepy setting, visually outstanding, and a great blend of action/horror/exploration. i must have played this game so many times, this is when you know how good a game trully is. So where do you go from this point?????

Well even without playing resi 5, i can confidently say they have just taken the best of resi 4, and twisted it to the form off purely action enviroment, in assumption to drive the aim towards coop play/visual.

Their are however so many cult fans for resi 5 that it will be a major sell out.
Posted by Sinthetic
you know what i love when playing single player. the fact that you can use sheva as your personal stash box. i just palm off the shit i don't want in my inventory and steal all her good stuff. i much prefer it than playing co-op. def can't do that.
Posted by stellardust
I played almost all Resi games and 4th has been my favorite, on Gamecube of coz. I agree that RE5 is more action orientated and it doesn't have that depth like RE1 or RE2. I have played the demo to bits, the online gameplay is great, attention to details the graphics have is splendid. When I saw the first trailer about 2 years ago I decided to buy PS3, and now I will also buy RE5.
Posted by carterlink
Seems to me that Capcom's terrible decision to pander to the online/multiplayer crowd is the main reason that one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time has become a complete limp fish. That, and the fact that Mikami wasn't involved.

It's okay, those saying 'well, I was only buying it for the multiplayer anyway'. Resident Evil was never about multiplayer, co-op or otherwise. I always had my doubts about number 5 and I won't now be rushing out to buy this. Might pick it up much later and much cheaper.

Keep it single player and keep it scary.
Posted by allygray69
spot on review mate, wasnt impressed by the demo at all and i just couldnt understand all these mags giving it 5/5, 10/10 etc. At last a decent and more accurate score for yet another overated game.
Posted by sweatyBallacks?
Spot on.

Whose idea was it to turn Resi into a multiplayer shooter-fest? That is the real shame.

Bring back the horror, the loneliness, the tension of what's behind the next door...

I'm abit puzzled why the cert is an 18 when the chainsaw decapitation isn't visible

I don't mind a sequel similiar to its prequel but a survival horror with no harshness undermines the meaning of the genre.

Decaps and harsh death scenes are essential in this genre, DS done a superb job!!

Well havent played full product yet wait and see

Heres a rough guide to content passed by the bbfc:

deadspace was ok i beat it 3 times and 1 was on impossible mode but it is not re5 imagine if u had to stop to shoot in deadspace how much more intense it would have been stop cryin about the controls of re5 and just plain learn how to play games the controls setup didnt stop re4 from 20 game of the year titles the only people who dont like re are the ones who can only play run and gunner games and that takes no skill like the people who play socom bottom line for all you people who dont like the game based off the demo learn how to play you stop aim and shoot how hard can it be my 12 year old can do that and he like myself loves the game

As far as IGNS 9/10 goes, I think IGN (and gamespot) are two of the most fake and untrustworthy sites out there. Not that I "trust" any review, but going from GAMERS opinions on RE5 thus far, that 9/10 score was grossly exaggerated.
Posted by TezChi
Really? the only people who dont like RE5 only play "run and gun" games? Well, that must make me and many others here genetic throwbacks then, musn't it? becuase I HATE sensless "run and gun" games, and...well, thats what RE5 is trying to be.

And RE4, while nobody would critize it (as it is a masterpeice) came out in 2005, things, and controls, have moved on since then.

Dead Space is 100 times better than RE5, I'm sorry but it is. Not only are the controls better, but from what I've seen on RE5, the environments and story are better as well.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
The best bit about all the bitching about this game on the web comes from a DEMO! A ****ing demo. you are basing your opinion of a game that'll be a bout 10 hours on two short scenes taken completely out of context and basing your opinion of that to tell the world the rest of the game must be rubbish too.

Thank you for making sure that the internet remains full of innacurate unimformed bs.

I know i've said this before but, The Deadspace demo sucks too, because like the resi one it gave you a gun and threw all variety of enemies at you, and at the end you were just left thinking . What the **** was that all about.

From Friday i say it'll be open season for people to praise and berrate this game because it'll be out and an actual proper opinion can be formed based on the final product. However if most of the ramblings on this site are to be believed you won't be playing it ever.
Posted by infamous76
yes roger4000 i am talking about the FINAL game - NOT the demo. I'm currently on chapter 6-2 and let me tell you when u see that stage tell me if it deserves only a 7/10.

graphics are out of this world and the sound is right out of a massive blockbuster movie.

i agree it aint like the usual resi evil game but it is STILL A VERY GOOD GAME none the less. how it got only 7/10 is a absolute JOKE, and a disgrace
Posted by TezChi
Look if you like the game then thats all that matters. I think you are taking review scores too seriously, they dont mean anything anyway.

As for me I wouldnt care if RE5 got 11/10 all round, as a big fan of the original RE games, i just do not like this new style, simple as that. Give me a mansion, a few green herbs and some zombies over this tripe ANY DAY.
Posted by infamous76
I REST MY CASE - this guy knows what he is talking about. it is obvious resi 5 is being singled out CLEARLY.

everyone who is saying the game is crap and Dead Space is better blah blah and HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED THE GAME just show how ignorant and immature they are. decide AFTER u have played the game NOT before - come on man - use ya brains for god sake.

This console generation is becoming more disappointing by the minute! :(
Posted by Dajmin
It's not about being like RE4 though. The over-the-shoulder camera works well and there's a real feeling of weight to everything you do (as I felt in the demo).

But from what I've read in reviews across the board they've gone for the being swarmed aspect of L4D and Gears 2 and provide too much ammo to really cause a scare. What's a roomful of zombies if you have 500 rounds for your rifle? Now imagine that roomful with only 15 rounds - you need to THINK about how to use them, pick your way through, look for explosive barrels, line up several to get as much out of each and every shot.

I don't find a hundred zombies running at me scary. Intense, yes. But not scary. More scary is turning a dark corner and having something jump out on you. From behind. With a chainsaw. Or simply the IDEA that there's something stalking you. The RE5 demo didn't say "horror" to me.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
spot on id say.

RE should be played alone, in dark confined spaces. not out in the sun with AI or a co-op partner probably talking shit over the mic.

theres no tension in that.

with hardly any puzzles its just an action blaster now, but it retains the control method suited to the slower pace. stupid.

Crimbo!! I seriously thought you was around 12 years old yourself, let alone old enough to have one!
Posted by infamous76
I CAN'T BELIEVE I have to even type this but i have to.

question:

have YOU played the whole game??? i think NOT.

has ign reviewers played the whole game?? more than likely dont u think, so that is why they gave it 9/10. just say u dont like the demo and leave it as that yeah, instead of slaggin off something you haven't even experienced fully yet. I find it a disgrace you even said you are a big resi fan - u can't be talking like that.

i was on resi 5 for 16 hours non stop on saturday night 2.30am thru to sunday evening 7.30pm and i was tired as hell but the game just kept drawing me back in to carry on playing - NO GAME has done that to me with the exception of resi 4 and GTA San Andreas. So that just tells me how good a game is in my opinion.

Without being too pedantic (moi?), have YOU played the whole game?
You already said you are on Chapter 6-2, which I assume isn't the end, right?

However, that aside, reviews are just someones opinion. What is spot on for some others wildly disagree with. It's no biggy. Did you see the debacle that was the Killzone 2 review thread? And that got 87% *shakes head*

If you like the game, that's all that should matter. And as has been said before, the fact that it's Resident Evil means that it WILL sell.

A question for you though, how is it that you already have it, and have had it for some time?

contacts mate, contacts in the right places.

but seriously tho mate, if u do get it I assure you it will be one of the best experiences you will have (if u like co op games) I did feel it felt a bit easy at the beginning (but that was cuz I'm an addict of resi 4 and so was my mate, so we are decent players at it in general) but trust me, later on the difficulty get cranked up immensley. Then u got Veteran to deal with afterwards.

i hope u enjoy it like i am ;-)

10 points to you my friend. i do like your responses by the way - talk more sense than most peeps on here

love the blind faith people thinking that this will be amazing just cause its a resi game.

it wasnt made by the resi creator.

its set in the sun for god sake and you have a buddy to hold your hand. how scary is that!

im interested in dead space now. but i hate space and i hate sci-fi. (reason why i never got it)

what are your enemies in it? are they humanoids or ghosts/aliens?
Posted by _Marty_
So why are you worried if people don't buy the game when you haven't bought it yourself? :?

I am getting it, and have it on pre-order. I'm also really looking forward to it. However, I wasn't 'blown away' by the demo, far from it - until I tried it co-op that is.

I still maintain Dead Space appears to be the better game, though I accept my experience of Resi 5 is currently limited.

They are, on the whole, 'infected' and mutated humans.

Most opinions I've seen online seem to be saying that the game controls are fine, but when faced with faster enemies, the control system just doesn't stand up. I like any genre pretty much, 'run n gun', horror, whatever. It just has to be good and control well. Although I found RE4 a nightmare at first - where's my strafe?!?

As with most people here, that opinion will be based on the demo. And, in my opinion, the demo was rubs. Although Marty has been bigging up the co-op, which I didn't try.

What is comes down to for me is, money is tight right now so I haven't got the spare cash for slightly speculative purchases. With L4D, Lost and Damned, SFIV etc I'm not hanging out for something new to play. When I am, perhaps I'll give it a proper try, maybe 2nd hand.

And even though IGN games are reviewed by US, UK and Aus, I still often struggle to find a good review out of the three. I'm not saying CVG are right on this one and IGN are wrong.

And I agree with grasshopper, I don't want to play survival/horror games with crap blasting down the headset ruining the atmosphere!

Thats the impression I got from the demo.
Posted by lonewolf2002
Isn't the idea of a ****ing demo to give you an idea of how a game plays otherwise why bother releasing one? "Here try our demo but the full game plays nothing like it", doesn't quite work does it?
Posted by _Marty_
*worries*
I'll qualify this by saying I (and my Resi partner) loved it - but it might not be for everyone. I guess. :)

Just like to say what a moron the reviewer is (seems to be a necessity to write a review on cvg these days), I stopped reading after

"You've got a very loud shotgun that will explode heads."

I don’t trust people with an inability to write properly.

Personally, I can’t bloody wait.

Roll on Friday.

I disagree with the review. I think the game will be great. I don't really intend to play offline that much, I'll be online more often than not, so the A.I won't be an issue. And I agree with pretty much everyone else here - so what if it's too similar to RE4? I thought that was obvious to see as soon as the first batch of gameplay videos were released?

it will be a decent game. i dont think they should have stuck resident evil on the front of it though. a new IP could have been born, instead of whoring the resi name out for hype and sales.

resident evil is about tension. them loading creaking doors in the first one (a cover for loading times i know) were brilliant at adding tension.

would love to see another mansion based, proper resident evil, slower and (at least an option for) fixed camera angles.

they could be quite fidgetty at times but added a real sense of claustrophobia. trying to raise the shotgun directly in the face of a green mutant running towards you was really panicky. none of this uppercutting pish!!

even better when you could hear the hunters footsteps round the corner but you couldnt yet see them (thanks to the fixed camera angles) real tension.

whatever RE5 is, its not survival horror!

Dead Space was a success because although it was an action horror, it really felt like a survival horror.

The future of the survival horror genre lies with Dead Space, this review and especially the idea of "zombies with guns" pretty much states that the Resident Evil franchise is dead.

Didn't like the demo much but playing it so soon after Dead Space may have caused that . Loved Resi Evil 4 on the ps2 so gonna try that again and see if its worth taking the chance on 5 .

You sir, are an idiot. Enough said. For a start, you think I am going to spend my hard earned money on something I hated from the demo, hated from the trailers and hated from a RE Fans perspective just so I can "play the whole game"? NO!

And don't try to say i am not a RE fan, I own every RE game and all the movies including the crappy Survivor games. Indeed, its BECAUSE I am an RE fan that I find RE5 so diapointing.

And IGN? You beleive IGN?...Uh, LOL?

Too much Resident Evil 4! Since when was that a con, sure it may be similar what games are different from anything aelse these days, just the ones that nobody buys.

for all you peeps who dont like re5 ok so move on why waste your time reading reviews and posting comment on some thing u dont like no one cares about you or your oppinion anyway
Posted by xbox sucks
re5 is awesome and the fact that you have a partner is great now you have to not only survive but to make sure your partner survives as well you have a small inventory for your ammo 1st aid weapons and not like deadspace were you have 1 inventory for weapons and 1 for all your ammo 1st aid and stuff dont get me wrong i like deadspace but re5 will be better as far as story and characters and controls not to different so what if you can walk and aim/shoot in ds its so slow you might as well stand still will someone explain what makes re5s controls so hard cause i dont see it

Really. Including resi 0.

If you were a fan you'd realise that 5 is basically resi 4 crossed with 0. In my mind thats not a bad mix (but i know resi 0 wasn't everyones cup of tea) and not really surprising considering that its being directed by the same guy that did 0.

Its not such a shock announcement that you have a partner, if i remember rightly you have done in the last 2 resis.

edit- wait you said you were a fan and you own the terrible movies that were based on cut scenes the director saw on you tube of code veronica. Damn if you were a fan you would of boycotted those bloody movies. The only thing good about them is the credits. (excluding degeneration of course as it had something to do with the series)

I have been playing a copy for a couple of days now, and the first thing that struck me is how similar it is to RE4 ( again, no bad thing) . I agree that it doesnt seem as fresh and dead space wins out in terms of controls. Also only being able to upgrade weapons at the start of each round is a bit annoying along with the fact you cant choose sheva's primary weapon for her, so she will just use her pistol in a boss situation unless you take away all her ammo and force her to use the next weapon in her inventory.

Apart from that it's a really good game, great atmosphere and some really tense moments from the opening stage - only if you play it on veteran as normal is way too easy - you get ridiculous amounts of herbs and ammo.

I have just got to the part where you are shooting at the zombie motorbikers from the back of a jeep, it does seem a little bizaare but its still pretty cool.

why oh why are poeple slatin this game for being a carbon isotope of probably the greatest game in the world, Resident Evil 4.i'm an all out RE fanboy n have obsessed over all the resis so far.ppo are complaining that its a resi 4 'episode' n not 'revolutionary'.what the hell do you want from it.not every game in the franchise was a 'revolution' yet i never saw the slatin.if u're a resi fan u won't care.just like another episode of dexter u'd still watch even if it had the same setting and pacing.i've played dead space n finished it multiple times n yeh it was an excellent game, creepy too.excellent addition to survival horror.mind u resi 4 wasn't exactly survival horror.if anything it had just as much action as resi 5 probably has.how have ppo overlooked that.frankly, there was no need to change the franchise.resi 1,2 and 3 were all more or less samey yet i see no one complaining about that.agree with the guys comparing the GOW and GoW series.stop devaluing the game.i admit to fallin out with CVG after a couple of recent reviews.i don't share their opinions, but i welcome them.the Resi 5 makers even said that they had no intention of changing the franchise.they'll leave that to resi 6,so its all good.i'd buy this just to see the story development.if u've really played resi and followed the story and cg movies,u'll be just as intrigued.this will be awesome for me.i haven't played it n i'm not gonna act like i did but the reasons for the slatin are just not good enough.love the franchise.48 hrs.2880 mins.172800 secs.bring.it.on

Resident evil 6 has either gotta get back to original resi's 1 to 3 ie survival horror or go full blown action the game just doesn't work with an AI partner why didn't they just make it single player with optional co op with a mate!
Posted by Sinthetic
i'm really interested and excited about all this patch and DLC business. also how it would affect review scores (not that i care about them)...

they added co-op to mercenaries mode (online/offline) also that news of the survival and versus modes where you play against a human opponent. very very cool. i am sure capcom are going to give new depth to the game in the coming months.

Jesus christ. Everyone who's slating this go out and buy yourselves a copy of Resi 0 for the GC or if your feeling mischievous download the homebrew channel and play the jap version for the wii.

then come back and whinge about 5's partner. she's ****ing einstein compared to billy/rebecca, you had to give them absolutely nothing or they'd waste every useable item you had.

^^^ :D true man,0 was a complete turkey.

i could never get in to 2 characters on screen at once,it diluted the experience: half the enemies would attack your partner leaving you to leisurely take them out.

it's one of my main gripes with 5 along with the fact that the 0 team did it.

also the old resi 4 trick of taking 2 steps backwards when an attack is launched at you will result in most enemies missing you because they attacked where you were not where you moved to still applies.

that's just cheap capcom.

next gen? like f*ck!

kudos to the reviewer for having the guts to rate resi 5 below a 9.
