BioWare eyes up Wii

Mass Effect, Dragon Age or... Sonic Chronicles for Wii?
BioWare co-boss Dr. Ray Muzyka has discussed the company's possible future development plans on Wii, revealing that they're "intrigued" by the idea of working on Nintendo's box.

"We do have some unannounced projects that we're not ready to talk about yet, and they are different from some things we've done in the past," Muzyka told Industry Gamers."We'd be intrigued by the idea of developing on Wii but we have nothing to announce right now."

When asked if BioWare's epic role-playing titans would be a fit for the waggling Wii audience, the doctor responded, "I think the question we'd ask is, 'What is the Wii audience looking for, and what would we want to deliver that has emotionally powerful narrative?' And that probably wouldn't be exactly the same as everything else we do.

"We did a DS game and that was already very different from what we've done before, and the PC-only SKUs we did years ago were very different than the ones we've done for console... They're all different from one another.

"If we did a Wii game I think we'd approach it with the target audience in mind first and the vision of delivering an emotionally powerful narrative and go back to our basics in terms of some of the pillars of gameplay we'd like to bring to bear - exploration, progression, customization, conflict, story, narrative, and characters.

"How do we adapt that to the platform?" he continued. "That's how we'd approach it. The interface design on the Wii is very different from the other platforms, and that's really an opportunity because you can actually tell different kinds of stories and convey a different type of narrative. "

That's a pretty strong hint from the doctor there; there's certainly been a lot of thought going on inside BioWare's walls. Would a Mass Effect spin-off, similar to the anime-infused iPhone version work?

Hell, just about anything is possible and far be it for me to speculate what is, or isn't, possible for BioWare and the good doctors to do on the Wii. They have a far better understanding of it than I do, I reckon.

I do think that BioWare would be under less pressure to equal the presentation and style of their existing games on the other platforms if they decided to start a new IP on the Wii instead. That way they can still strive to achieve the formula they use in their current games with the added freedom of not having a direct comparison made between the PC and Xbox versions of ME to that of a potential Wii version of ME (which will likely disappoint in the eye-candy department compared to the other two versions).

Any developer would be stupid to ignore the Wii with a potential 50million plus customers to tap into, so it's no surprise to see more and more wake up to this fact.

wii has a large target audience but i bet the 360 has more people willing to buy an fps or modern rpg (fallout/mass effect) than the wii. the wii has so many different types of gamers that few games appeal to the full spectrum of users. currently i'd see the wii as a risk compared to the ps3 and 360 in terms of typical current gen console games.

pishers, I agree that the main established base of the Wii is more likely to buy a shovelware game, but there is also a base of people who are dying for some decent hardcore games to come out on their (Currently relegated to parties-only) systems.

Myself included!

The wii-mote is perfectly suited to some old-school RPG games (as are RTS games), as a perfect replacement to a mouse and where there isn't so much emphasis on graphics. Unfortunately very few developers are willing to take a gamble even though I'm sure there's more than enough people out there that would buy these games.

Anyway, whatever Bioware do, I hope they finally release Baldur's Gate 3 or even a Planescape: Torment 2 on the PC, if indeed they've still got the license.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic + MotionPlus = Win

Actually, you only have to look and see that shovelware games arent selling. There are so many of them, and as casual gamers arent that informed, they just buy whatever looks good. So when carnival games sold loads of copies, it was because the market wasnt saturated. Now there are loads of those games, and they all have to share the same market. As a result more developers are turning to "proper" games and you can see that in the Wii's release schedule and game sales.

Anything in the Mass Effect universe with Motion Plus would be fantastic. Make it so!

Well I'm pretty sure what the Wii audience is looking for is more core games.
But what I would love to see more of on the Wii are adventure games like Myst and I think Bioware would be able to make a great experience of this type of game on the Wii, still I wait eagerly to find out what they have in store.

What worries me, is not any ex PC developer going to other formats, it's how inevitably their games end up being brought down to the lowest common denominator.

It's not coincidence that before Bioware went 'multiformat' we got games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment, and after they went 'multiformat' we moved to games like Jade Empire and Mass Effect, much more action orientated games designed more for the console market than PC.

I just see another dumbing down of games on all formats if Bioware add Wii to their roster, because their games certainly got dumbed down when they added the 360 and PS3 to their roster! Unless you think Jade Empire and Mass Effect are as hardcore as Baldur's and Planescape..
