However i don't know anybody that has played the original that didn't like it and aren't at least going to give the sequal a fair shot.
PLaying as a big daddyand a few bizare plot choices aside. easy, the game is going to be one of the candidates for game of the year and will sell loads, especially as it has a multiplatform release on the same day. I think owners of the PS3 will warm to it as they don't have to wait another year. I think it'll make that number easily. So where is your monkey today?
Oh, and on topic (sort of) - I'm struggling whether to put Bioshock or Fallout 3 on top of my best games ever list. Story means a lot to me, so maybe Bioshock is better, but then VATS is great, so maybe Fallout, but then moral choices are important, so both get top marks on that part.
Help! Drop the ******** limited activations (no, the reclaim tool is not the same thing,) and the odious DRM and I might consider getting it for the PC. I generally want to avoid FPS games on console since I find the controls awkward compared to a keyboard & mouse setup. KFD we all know you own a 360 now. I know fpss aren't as great in the control stakes on consoles as the PC. But you would be doing yourself a diservice to not experience the original bioshock. Especially considering you can probably pick it up for under a tenner now.
@will7476. I don't know where my monkey is.Have you seen it?
Also thats a bloody tough one. Personally Bioshcok beats fallout hands down in the story dept. because altough theres a truckload of it in Fallout3 if you look for it, the main quest however leads much to be desired. Bioshock on the other hand from a thematic and narrative perspective is one of the most intelligent and absorbing tales i've ever seen in a game.
Personally Bioshock just edges it for me mainly because story is most important to me when i play a modern game.
VATS is cool though and the pit did have one of the best moral dilemas possed in a game ever. If you've got half a heart the one posed in bioshcok isn't at all.
Still i say Bioshock first, then fallout3 I still have Bioshock sitting in it's selophane wrapper next to my PS3. I will get round to playing it soon, hopefully before number 2 comes out.
Anyway, I'll no doubt be getting Bioshock 2. Defo gonna pick up Bioshock 2, like I already said the first one got me into FPS! Should sell better with simultaneous release on all platforms this time round. I've considered it, and I may yet do so. However, within the first week of being an Xbox 360 owner I made a pact with myself to more or less avoid FPS games on the console simply because I find it to be an exercise in frustration. It's akin to using a broadsword for open heart surgery instead of a deft and precise scalpel when comparing console FPS controls to the FPS controls for the PC, IMO.
There are certain FPS games I'm willing to buy for the console, but that's primarily because they aren't available on the PC.
Moving on, I agree with you that the story for Fallout 3 left something to be desired. Especially compared to the original Fallout 1&2s, FO3 didn't match up in terms of storytelling at all. 3 million wasn't very good for a title on 3 machines. 5 million will only be average. This is how you hype. Underplay and then if/when the game sells, say 5.5 million you can pretend that's a major hit, whereas on 3 machines, 7 million plus is where a major hit starts and to avoid argument that you have a major hit you need around 10 million.
I see Bioshock 2 as more of the same, but this time with a much weaker story and more of a simple shooter than anything else. I can see it matching what Bioshock sold, around 3 million, but I can't see it doing much more than that.
What people need to understand is a little more about numbers and what games are ACTUALLY hit's rather than what the media and industry try to tell you. For example, despite Bioshock getting tons of free media hype and 90%+ reviews, it only did just over a million units on PC. STALKER, a competing shooter that generally got 80-85% reviews has sold 2.75 million on PC, dwarfing the better known title. Even a genre that the media will tell you is now a niche market, hard core RPG's had a title 'The Witcher' that sold over 3 million.
Now go into any thread and ask which title sold the most on PC of Bioshock, STALKER and The Witcher and you know what would come top. This is because of the biased media that supports the big American companies to the exclusion of anyone else.
So Bioshock 2 will be the average hit that Bioshock was, but it will still be thought of a year from now as though it was a major hit - just like we do with the first Bioshock.
The gaming media tries to sell us a story. That doesn't mean it's the truth. |
