Reggie: Other M is "traditional Metroid"

Goes deeper into Metroid mythology
Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime says Metroid Other M, the new Wii title in development at Team Ninja, will be a "traditional" Metroid game, in an attempt to recreate the success of the Super NES classic, Super Metroid.

"It's all about what we can do creatively with a franchise to revitalise it," said Fils-Aime. "A year ago, if someone asked me what's going on with Metroid - when are we going to go back to the more tradition Metroid series versus the path that we went down with Prime? Here's the answer: Other M.

"Metroid, for us, is a key franchise and in our view, since the SNES Metroid, we haven't broken through - as in [selling] 1.5 or two million units," he admitted.

"As we looked at where we wanted to go with Metroid, we wanted to place Samus back in the more traditional lineage of Metroid. We wanted to do it in a way that had a harder edge, and we wanted to go deeper into her story and more into this Metroid mythology," he told GameSpot.

"We could have done a fine job on our own but we saw Team Ninja a way of adding a little extra special sauce, if you will, to make it a really compelling experience."

Team Ninja...oh, you mean the guys who've just lost most of their key team members.

I'm sure a quality game will ensue. (sarcasm)

Wasn't Retro studios (the last Metroid developers) going to have a big announcement at E3 regaurding something for Microsoft or did I miss that?
Posted by palancas7
For Microsoft? They belong to Nintendo, what's wrong with you?
Posted by milky_joe
Given that they're owned by Nintendo.... no.

At least its good to see 2D style games on current consoles. I can't think of any on the shooter swamped 360 though I know the PS3 has LBP. Let's hope it turns out good. I can't see Nintendo letting Team Ninja ruin a Metroid game...

Having said that, they did let Namco f*ck up Star Fox...

I thought they split from Nintendo? I must have dreamt that I guess  So what the hell are Retro studios doing if they are not doing Metroid?

Anyhoo......I have every confidence in Team Ninja and if anyone can do a 'core game' it's these folks (although I'll expect Samus's tits to have got bigger!)

While I'd like to believe that this is "traditional Metroid," as Reggie considered Animal Crossing a hardcore game I can't trust his definitions of anything. I'd like to be proven wrong, and a 2D DS Metroid would be nice too.

They cant do any worse than Rare(who lost members) who've released a big pile of rubbish on the 360 so far.

Not fair, 'nuts and bolts' is a brilliant game, you just have to give it a real chance.

Designing and building your own vehicles is immensely satisfying and very addictive, i persuaded several of my close friends to give this game a shot, and they have all been converted.

The multiplayer is a bit hit and miss but the single player is brilliant, shame all you close minded people have ignored it :(

Rare F*ck up Star Fox first with the great looking but extremelly dull Zela rip-off Adventures!

I'd like to see Nintendo themselves do another 3D Donkey Kong - a sequal to DK64 but with some great Mario Galaxy ideas thrown in!

Christ..that Nuts and Bolts Xbox Live demo was hard work, talk about tedious.

Here's an idea Rare, if you want to sell more games, create demos that are FUN! Then people may actually want to buy the game.

I agree, the demo had put me off the game also.

But i picked up a copy cheap and was pleasantly surprised by how great it really is, in this age of the same old pap being turned out year in year out, it really is a breath of fresh air.

I'm sorry bud but that was actually Nintendos own fault. Star Fox Adventures was originally going to be on the N64 sans the star fox part simply called dinosaur planet. Since it was going to come out at the end of the N64 and Nintendo saw the paralells with both having anthropomorphic characters and wanting a new star fox as soon as possible for the Cube they told rare to redo it and include the starfox crew.

I quite enjoyed it for what it was though.

Also DK64 sucked balls.

Oooh Team Ninja are special sauce... yeah I don't care apart from NG1 I don't like their stuff and this game looks confused and cheap.
Given Retro where doing such an awesome job I'm surprised Ninty would do this.
People will still buy this as it's Metroid but I hope after this they wise up and start work on a traditional side scrolling Metroid for DS and another Retro studios Metroid for Wii.

but this is going to be a traditional 2d/3d adventure for the wii. Its also only being made inconjunction with Team Ninja. Nintendo are still firmly in the drivers seat. Considering its being compared to super metroid a hell of a lot it wouldn't surprise me if this ended up being the best in the series.

No Disrespect to the awesome job retro did with the prime games but its time for a change.

Same here. I thought the demo sucked, but after playing the full game for an hour or so it's barely been out of my 360.

Although something had to get me off L4D.

I thought Metroid Prime wasn't anything special and just didn't 'light my fire' but seeing the clips of Other M has given me hope for Nintendo...But as yet the lil Wii is still unused...Punchout is the only game that appeals to me at this present time, I might give it a rent...

My brother bangs on all the time that I should have played the SNES Metroid and that I should play it now. Maybe I'll get out my SNES and play it then get this one when it comes out. I don't doubt that it will be a quality title. It looks absolutely brilliant. Who says you can't make a nice looking 2d game(Although it is 3d) :)
