10 memorable moments in MGS4

The highlights of Kojima's stealth epic
1. Snake's disguises

You might've used Snake's environment-mimicking OctoCamo suit to 'comically' blend in with paisley carpet tiles, but each time you 'stamina kill' a boss - i.e. tranquillise, not kill, them during the second stage of the fight - you'll receive special face masks including the Beauty And The Beast unit, 'young' Snake and even a blocky, lo-res MGS version. Oh, and complete the game with 50+ knife kills, 50+ CQC grabs and tripping less than 25 alerts to unlock Altair's robes from Assassin's Creed...

2. Snake Vs Zombie

Okay, so MGS4 doesn't contain proper zombies, but with their nanomachines malfunctioning, the PMCs in the South American act's final set-piece resemble George A Romero's finest. Kojima has talked of making a zombie-survival game, where death forces you to restart while your old character shambles around as a zombie. Also, 'Snake vs Zombie' was a real developer meeting held in Japan.

3. Mech Love and war

The mech duel that brings Snake's return visit to Shadow Moses to a climax is perhaps the finest example of console tech finally catching up with Kojima's ambitious cheese dreams. Despite fears of Zone Of The Enders-style Ryvita-light mech handling, Snake's Metal Gear REX feels at once bracingly solid and meaty like an abattoir's bin, and aggressively swift. The resulting boss battle against Liquid in his Metal Gear RAY is one of MGS4's best set-pieces.

4. The sexy White Room

MGS4's biggest secret is... a photo shoot with each of the defeated members of The Beauty And The Beast unit. How do you unlock it? In the second stage of the boss battle, where she tries to hug you, don't shoot, but keep running and hiding until the screams intensify. Eventually, Snake will stop and the screen whites out, taking you to the 'other place'. Point the camera at them and they'll pose; better still, play the Oishii Chuhan Seikatsu track on Snake's iPod and they'll dance for you.

5. Damaged goods

MGS4's Beauty And The Beast unit are so physically distorted by their cybernetic armour that it's hard to imagine that they were ever human at all, let alone saucy supermodels. But defeat them and the terrifying suits fall away revealing the young women they once were. And look. They want to give Snake a hug. Isn't that nice? It isn't? Wait, what are they doing? Argh.

6. Old school to hi-def

The return to MGS' Shadow Moses base is one of MGS4's standout moments. But before the mission kicks off in earnest, the game throws in a superb piece of playable nostalgia in the form of the original game's helipad base infiltration, complete with smudgy 32-bit visuals. Successfully enter the main hangar and the game flashes back to crisp HD mode as Snake starts awake from "an old nightmare".

7. 'Emotional' secret ammo

Complete MGS4 to unlock special tranquilliser darts for Snake's Mk.2 tranquilliser - called Laugh, Rage, Cry and Scream - that trigger emotional wig-outs inspired by the members of The Beauty And The Beast unit. Start a new game, head to Drebin's Store and access the ammo section to buy the ultimate upgrades. Mix up the darts, and turn war into a tragic pantomime.

8. Greying Mantis

Even those who've never played Metal Gear Solid on PSone know about freaky boss Psycho Mantis' ability to 'read' the player's memory card, and make the DualShock pad 'levitate'. Shockingly revived in MGS4, he sets out to repeat his tricks only to get scuppered by PS3's lack of memory card and the Sixaxis pad's lack of rumble - unless you're using an imported DualShock 3, that is. Realising he's completely out of his depth, Psycho Mantis bottles it and scarpers without a fight. A great moment.

9. Feeling the burn

With Snake close to terminal physical and mental exhaustion, he's tasked to run an impossible gauntlet of a seemingly never-ending corridor blasted by microwaves. And so, stealth suit popping and burning from Snake's body, you must hammer X to push him on. It lasts way beyond what is comfortable, bonding player and hero magnificently as the game drops away and all that is left is stamina and will.

10. Brother! Let's finish this

Who'd have thought it'd all come down to this? After 21 years of bleeding-edge military technology and finely honed tactical espionage, the Metal Gear Solid series culminates with two stubborn old men weaving around in wobbly, panting circles leathering each other like two White Lightning-fuelled 'career' tramps. While, technically, it's a rubbish, barely responsive, beat-'em-up, with each crunching impact, the final showdown between Liquid and Snake manages to evoke, music, gestures and even screen furniture from every chapter in the series. Awesome stuff.

I agree with everything you said.

The only problem with this game really was that Shadow moses was filled with machines. Would have loved some human enemies. Still a great Act though, i loved Shadow Moses.

I think I'd include the motorbike ride through Eastern Europe in there somewhere. That was awesome!

/agree

though, personally, I'd drop the Snake vs Zombies part (good as it was, it was also bloody annoying) in favour of Raiden's final showdown, sans arms.
Posted by Wallomania
No i have 2 disagree ,i thought that snake vs zombies part was bloody brilliant, i always wanted some kind of zombie type bad guys in a metal gear game an Mgs4 finally delivered it, wasnt just the zombies that made that section good but you had to fend off the two legged Gekko aswell.
Posted by VulcanRaven
shadow moses, biggest highlight of the game,

i didnt care for the part of the game where you have to reach the mansion, and track noami. act 2 is it?.
Posted by atrimus
naw. i personally liked Snake vs. Zombies, though controlling the turret got kinda cumbersome after a while. as for Raiden, i think his first fight with Vamp and him stopping the battlecruiser at the end of Shadow Moses were his best depictions.

"I am lightning, the rain transformed!"

raiden owns :D
Posted by evilfoxhound
You missed the part at Shadow Moses when "The Best Is Yet To Come" kicks in. Greatest videogame moment of all time. By FAR.
Posted by Wallomania
Actually while we are on the subject of shadow moses, i thought the part near the end when the screen went split screen an raiden was fighting vamp and snake had to get rid of the self destructing gekko was rather cool!

One of my fave moments was Snake and Liquid battling it out in the two Metal Gears, looked so amazing!

To name 10 stand out moments in MGS4 is a bit tricky for me to be honest the whole game is like one huge stand out moment, I'm surprised no haters have commented yet :o
Posted by ajsuperstar
I don't own a ps3 but completed the game at my mates, and it was just all amazing and as a big fan being in shadow moses again was just the best gaming experiance ever. And then the rex vs rey moment was just unbeatable, and the final boss battle was just designed perfectly. I can't actually find a flaw in that game at all.

I have to agree with this 110%! when i was going around collecting ipod songs i was desperately looking for "the best is yet to come", then when u turn the corner onto that helipad & it kicked in I've never smiled so hard since the 1st time i chainsawed a locust in half, it was awesome... i was a bit miffed with Snake's finale in MGS4 *SPOILER!!*
after seeing the trailer where snake kills himself i thought that would of been a fantastic ending to the game, and if you physically had to pull the trigger urself by pushing R1 that would of just been so dramtic... but sadly Hideo wimped out & opted for the warm fuzzy ending....boo.....

That, and the MGS 1 surveillance camera falling down after 9 long years of decay and oblivion with "The Best is Yet to Come" playing in the background.

Absolutely great moments listed but other like you guys suggested should be up there, especially raidens battle and in stopping Haven.

The best is yet to come and the whole Shaddow Moses sector made the hairs on my neck stand up, abosolutely outstanding.

The section where you track Naomi, Very reminiscent of Snake eater, and getting tips from Raiden, waiting to see him, awsome.

The last hour of the game from snake going through the microwave tunnel was so powerfull and emotional.

LLLIIIIIQQQQQQQUUUUUUIIIIDDDDDDD!!!!!!

Undoubtably the best game of all time

Just waiting for the haters and fanboys to voice in!

Well i only finished the game yesterday, i really wanted to take my time while playing it, as the MG series is by far my favourite on any platform. Knowing that this MAY be the last game, or we won't see another for a while i didn't want to rush through it.

I have to agree with all the points that C&VG made, plus ones that you guys have all added. Pretty much every moment of the game was stand out for me. It really is a spectacular game on every level. The whole tracking the resistance member through the level, the bit where you and Rat Patrol have to make you way down the building while being attacked by the FROGS, the whole Shadow Moses level, any scene with Raiden, the boss battles, especially the one with Raven, the Octocamo, and just watching Snake struggling with what;s being thrown at him all the way through the game were amazing. The whole bit where he's struggling through the microwaves while the battle is going on in the upper screen was pretty much one of the best moments for me. It just amplifies how much is resting on Snake's shoulders! And the whole ending, tying up all the loose ends and maybe starting some more is brilliant.

I could go on, but you get my drift. It's by far the best game i've played this generation so far, and i'd just like to say well done, both to Kojima-san, the team at Konami, David Hayter for giving a stellar performance as Snake, and to the PS3 for finally having a game on the system that lives up to the promises about the system.

couldn't agree more with you nottsville...

im on my 3rd playthrough now, must have big boss emblem  (bit of a shame i have to skip all the cutscenes tho)

The bit where Raiden cuts off his own arm to save Snake is awesome!! :D

Yes, MGS4 is great. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for UK release now, please. Even better, do HD versions on PS3 with The Twin Snakes. It'll even fit on one disc. And then there's Metal Gear 3: Revolver Ocelot.... now where is it....?
Posted by Mark240473
Nothing more to be said. Well, except for: KONAMI! GIVE ME SOME TROPHIES! MGS4 with trophy support would never leave my PS3. It's all I ask.
Posted by feeg86
If you say do a HD remake of twin snakes, they should just go all out and get it looking like mgs4, with new codec animations and updated voicing etc
Posted by Assassin_Jaffar
Agreed, the whole thing was amazing. But the best is easily the fight with Liquid/Ocelot. And it was great, i don't know why CVG are critising. I absolutely hate Beat 'em ups, but were Kojima to make an MGS4 Beat 'em up i'd buy it. The interactiveness of the CQC grabs is great, and the fight is extremely atmospheric.

One of the most annoying things about the game though is that some of the items could just be turned on rather then having to actually equip them. Such as the Solid Eye and Ipod. And even worse, you can't get the song 'Old Snake' for your Ipod. Which is a shame because i love that song.

I have cried during return to Shadow Moses, just there was so much memories for me. It just like returning to your chillhood home. And microwave scene, I just couldn't carry on and wanted to lay on the floor, it was amazing. incredible.

ps. just don't tell anyone I have cried.

mgs1 with mgs4 game-engine, would be my dream game.
Posted by dahsif
I had to switch the console off because the wife was sitting next to me and I was holding my tears.
Posted by DodgieDM
I like all those bits but one of the best bits for me is the final fight with liquid were snake just vents his anger.
AAAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!! LIIIIIIIIQUID!!!!

I Feel your anger snake..... :D
Posted by iNNOCENT
Yeah, I could totally feel his usually calm manner explode into this awesome rage, that even Sanke couldn't contain. The fight was epic!
Posted by D4Y.V
i believe MGS4 was over fanbased, i mean YEA [SPOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRSSSS) big boss coming back is EMOTIONAL but its just tooooo fanfiction.
i also disagree with all statments regarding MGS1 on MGS4's engine, and TROPHY support
im a fan of MGS since i was 3, so bugger off...
i liked the last Battle, i hate the gameplay ACTS 1-5, i LOOOOOVED the AKINA although its just not enough. i longed to sneak, but the game spat in my face and let me run wherever the **** i wanted because realising that even on The Boss Extreme its to simple to get a headshot, and that nomatter howmuch you try sneaking its eather a stray bullet smacks you in the Tache or the militia need help because of there SMSC its good enough to be the final chapter but its hardly pleasing saying that It'll do.
