Honestly, 360 has alot of potential, so does the PS3, and EA havent unlocked any of it. Oh dear. This is treading over old, shaky ground with a bottomless, fire filled chasm underneath it indeed. The man clearly dosn't know what he's talking about. On paper the 360's gpu is actually more powerful than the Ps3's, although the Ps3's cpu/s are more powerful so it ends up just the same. Ergo, if the 360 is 'maxed out' than so is the Ps3. I suggest the man from EA gets hold of a fact sheet the next time he feels a sudden impulse to say something stupid. He says this now but we all know that the games that will come out at the end of the 360's life will be so much better than the current games the tw*t is spot on

They have created a console thats easy to develop for and thats why EA have got closer to maxing out the potential for 360 in a shorter timescale than ps3. The shoddy PS3 conversions of Madden etc prove how far behind the PS3 was starting from. When they say that the PS3 still has more potential they say so with a clear understanding and acknowledgement that the ps3 conversions of their multiformat titles were miles behind their 360 counterparts. Sony are still playing catch up. Thats how I have taken the quote. It's true. The PS3 still has lots of room for improvement, maybe if they keep working at it they may even be able to match the power of the Xbox 360 in a few years! @Suivaloom
Source? Well as for PS3 I'm pretty sure they haven't maxed it out yet, I'd say it's similar to PS2 which was also difficult to program for just like PS3 and we all know that the quality of graphics were rising during it's lifetime.
As for x360, I have no idea, but with FF13 and Crysis 2 coming to both consoles I'd say there's still room for improvement. EA's sending out the right message. With so many 360 tw*ts with 'chipped' 360s getting games for next to nothing, EA have every right to knock down the 360. In the last year Ubisoft, EA, Konami, Take Two and Namco Bandai said most of their profit is made from PS3 games even though 360 has a larger fanbase. Square Enix have gambled and last 2 years focused on getting more RPGs onto the 360 and it's failed for them horribly. Has 360 maxed out? Don't care. All I know is that my PS3 games and graphics constantly blow me away. I know how you feel, CVG has done that to me a few times too. They even say they'll give you credit if you send them a message tipping them off on something, so I did. And next thing you know they then produced the article with no mention of thanking me whatsoever. That's why if I do find something that CVG hasn't made an article about I make sure it's available for everyone to see so it's obvious where they got the info from :roll: Oh dear oh dear. EA. You haven't scratched the surface of any console yet. Games on both the PS3 and 360 look awful compared to your competitors.
With the likes of Crysis 2 on both consoles, and even Lost Planet 2, they're visuals probably pushing the machines. Not yours.
It's just the Sony fanboy kicking out in him, thats all. Rather than making all these pointless comments. Why don't you work with your dev team, and make something look good for a change.
Then to actually prove what you say, make the PS3 version better than the 360 version of your EA catalogue. Not running slightly worse, because you're too bone idol to port it over properly. What are some of you babbling about ??
2009 versions of Madden,Tiger Woods ,NHL and Fifa were just the same on 360 and PS3 (60fps etc ).Not to mention games as Dead Space and Mirrors Edge that even had some slight edge on the PS3 version behalf.

This guy is a developer ,you arent.THe 360 GPU is more efficient and modern in its architechture but not more powerful.Actually it can do 96 MSOPS (million shader operations per second) against the 100MSOPS of the RSX so no ,its not more powerful but pretty much the same.And the Cell is 220 Gigaglops while the 360 CPU is 77,thats a big advantage of the PS3.Not to mention the serial HDD and the Blu Ray storage.Pushed to the limit the PS3 can create things the 360 couldnt.I think that things like Killzone 2 ,Uncharted 2 ,Gran Turismo 5 ,Heavy Rain and God of War 3 are a definite step over the best the 360 has offered yet.Hell ,even games as MAG ,Little Big Planet ,Resistence 2 or Flower are not doable by the 360 right now due to the lack of HDD ,the cycles of CPU needed or the amount of people in the multiplayer.
If this guy says he feels they have maxed out the 360 but not yet the PS3 you should take it with some consideration.I remember very well the 360 guys saying when the PS3 launched that the PS3 couldnt push ahead of the 360 for at least 3 years.Ok ,but the 3 years have passed or are about to pass and the PS3 is starting to push ahead in the last months.
And EA is churning out some good games this gen.Burnout Paradise ,Fight Night 3 and 4 ,Dead Space ,Mirrors Edge ,Battlefield Bad Company ,etc etc . I don't own a console. I have a PC only.

The PC is the best GPU and CPU combination. EA has NEVER maxed the PC. He could be right, I have a 360 which I love but nothing since the Gears series has really seemed visually impressive. That said though EA has NEVER made a game that even remotely seemd to push the boundries of ANY console. If Sony could get some really good games out there instead of all this "coming soon" B.S. they might be able to hang in there. That and a price drop. god I get fed up with this shit. Of course they Haven't got everything from PS3. It's bloody obvious, Time is all they need, and that Take That song. It's just some want to be able to click there fingers and boom. Like Valve, They want everything to be easy. Developing top games ain't meant to be. There are always challenges Faced when developing top games. It's just some have the balls to meat them. Maybe you misunderstood. I was pointing out that even if the 360 had met it's end as far as the tech could be pushed. EA would still support the system. I think that they would even rather ME2 was multi plat as well. Suppose I just wasn't clear enough before. But they are not going to drop the 360 especially when it has a few million more users out there. i am off to play red faction.. god its good and its not got EA all over it... this might sounf controversial but in their defenece for games looking not that great ect.. my game of the year last year was Dead Space.. amazing.. in all ways and the most violent game i played!! Yes, EA have improved by leaps and bounds. At there press conference at E3, I was interested in what they had coming out more than either MS, Sony, or Nintendo. I think many gamers are now changing how they view EA. They have clearly taken a new direction, and I think it is paying off. @Suivaloom -- Get your facts, and not just rumors alone.
They recieved the Rockstar PS3 exclusive purely because they did want to try something different, not that the hardware within the Xbox 360 cant take it. Quite the opposite really. I was somewhat impressed with some of sony's stuff at E3 but I still have not seen anything that tells me that only the PS3 could do this, 360 still has a lot left in the tank & none of the current machines have been pushed to the max as yet IMO.
That said Sin & punishment 2 on Wii looks Freakin sweet (for a wii game) & yes I have a Wii & the trailer for the Grinder looked horribly early thought I was back in the Saturn & PS1 days of FPS games :shock: but with Left 4 Dead as inspiration I hope they can make it look at least as decent as The Conduit.
As for storage mediums would not surprise me with MS going to stream movies in 1080p if they are not gearing the 360 towards becoming the hub that you will stream your games to in the future also a bit like onlive I mean if they can stream movies in 1080p on a good connection then there is no reason why they cannot do it with the games & that is something MS are clearly looking towards in my view & would remove the storage medium from the mix completely. 360 maxed out?

We play games, whether the console has been maxed out or not makes zero difference.
360 is still holding it's lead over PS3 at present due to the PS3's high price and the many exclusives that Microsoft pay out for.
Now, when the PS3's price is dropped and all these PS3 exclusive come out the PS3 should start to eat away at the 360's lead.
Console games are never maxed out because developers will always be fine tuning graphics engines and finding new shortcuts. Look at GOW 2 on PS2. Snigger. shit, does this mean they won't be able to make good games anymore?? can developers only make games when a console is using less than 100%

EA really managed to suck you right in. There is nothing on 360 that comes close to Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 graphically. But this is only graphics
Also, a relevent test is comparing GT5 and Forza 3. (Forza 3 actually started development after GT5 so is more current):
Forza 3 car polygon count: 900,000 polygons (maximium)
GT5 car polygon count: 1,650,000 polygons (maximum)
Also, GT5 runs native 1080i whereas Forza 3 does not

They went from being number one all the way back to last place, and the sad thing is that gamers and game makers told them this would happen even before the PS3 was launched.
Sony should be taught as an example in business schools about the importance of respecting and listening to your customers and and how turning your back on them will cost you money in the long term.
Even at this E3 they didn't seem to have learned anything. Where Nintendo and Microsoft were talking up the games and the fun new developments, that fool from Sony was using words like "franchise expansion" and "brand recognition".
Just goes to show what happens when you let business men rule your company instead of people who are actually interested in gaming and technology, it's no wonder that almost every franchise that made the PS2 great has jumped ship and come to the Microsoft console. The fact that EA feel they have "Maxed Out" the potential of any games console, Obviously shows the limits of EA themselves rather than the consoles & hardware they are working on.
Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo all see the current climate as far too risky/expensive to release a new console into, graphically the hardwares limits of all the consoles will start to show within the next year or so, which means all three will be using additional equipment to prolong their current hardware's shelf life (Sony's twin sticks, Wii's "Heart Rate monitor" and Microsofts Natal). All the consoles have a good 5 years in them yet, but will probably need a peripheral to make it.
I'm just enjoying my gaming, no matter what console. *(I know there's a lot more games than I mention here-but that just shows how much we've got to look forward to, right?).
E3 has shown that it's a great time to be a gamer.
whether it's the Xbox: (Mass Effect 2, FFXIII, Crackdown 2, Halo ODST, Forza 3, Halo Reach, Left for Dead 2 and Project Natal plus Xbox Live - Sky, Twitter, Facebook, 1080p movies and sports with your mates).

and overuse of the word nerd just exposes your insecurity. As an xbox owner Killzone does seem to have the higher graphical fidelity, I had accepted that the PS3 was showing it's grunt.
However comments from Crytek as you have quoted confuse me really. So both consoles have pretty much the same performance then? It could be, lots of things have to be considered; Different game engines, better coders etc. The 360 surprised me with the graphical quality of Splinter Cell, Alan Wake and Forza 3, but the main one I want to see is Halo: Reach. ODST will use the existing Halo 3 engine, but Reach is a whole new one, so will be a better comparison against Killzone 2. Reach is definately using a new engine then? I know it will be in for a hell of a lot of flak if it isn't.
Any links of interest regarding Reach? Killzone 2 will be over a year old by the time Reach is out though so that will have to be considered. It's probably better to compare it to PS3 exclusives released in the same period.
I really hope Bungie don't disappoint because Reach has gone straight to my top most wanted.
In regards to the forum though, I would actually welcome the tech ability being maxed out on all consoles. The games are always better when the consoles have hit their peak. An extended period between the next gen should see an improvement in quality across the board as developers have now pretty much got to grips with the tech. Back on topic for a brief second, I've read a quite a few interviews now with developers that have gone on the record as saying that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are pretty much neck-and-neck when it comes to raw "gaming power".
The PS3 supposedly out-muscles the 360 when it comes to raw mathematical horse-power, but the 360 edges it back out when it comes to it's more efficient memory architecture.
On the other hand, the PS3 has a data-storage advantage with Blu-Ray, at the cost of a disadvantageous low speed of data transfer from it's optical drive, hence all the unfortunate mandatory installs.
Between that, and other small differences here and there, this is probably the most evenly matched pair of competing consoles we've seen in a while, so the only choice you have to make is in the politics, i.e. which exclusives you're interested in.
Personally, I went for the PS3 in the end, but luckily my housemate got an Xbox, so we're both laughing. I think that's probably the reason for rabid fanboyism this gen.
Last gen it was accepted that the Playstation 2 was the technically inferior machine but had most definately won the console war.
This gen, both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 seem very close technically and I think by the end of this gen they'll be close in actual sales.....however both have a long way to go when compared to the Wii's punctuation on the market. You're quite right, but I haven't heard of another exclusive FPS for PS3 coming out next year, maybe another Resistance.

Is this not the PS2 game that Bungie created a few years ago? Is Halo and that game linked in any way like Marathon is?
I know Bungie are big on mythos and linking all their IP.
With all this linking, I don't think Bungie are about really creating anything completely new, they seem to really like to flesh out a universe. And like to make different stories that fit into it.
ONI, Marathon and Halo seem to all be linked. I haven't played any other than the Halo series so I can't tell whether the link is mere self indulgence on Bungie's part or whether they all occupy the same universe in the way Marvel's characters do. With so many fanboys surely CVG is burning down. I agree with the man. But not in the same way, yes the 360's power may have been used but it still has a bit more to offer but it in NO way has been finished with in games terms, I'm more then sure there are tons of new tones to come out.
I also agree that they have not used all of the PS3's power yet, it's a Sony, it's designed to take several lifetimes to leanr how to push it :lol:
I just hope BOTH consoles last a good few years yet and they don't replace them as they still BOTH have a lot more to give and I think he graphics are great, online is brilliant on both, the apps stores are getting together, they both have good install base. Why change them? just work on them to make them better, 360 more reliable, PS3 power pushed and more games on it. nothing on the 360 looks as good as uncharted let alone killzone 2, as for uncharted 2, heavy rain and god of war 3 well thats just another step up again. PS3 is more powerful deal with it, but graphics arent everything Whilst some links seem plausible, I'd just say they're nods to the other series. One thing about the Reach trailer, is that the lights on the planets surface looked very similar to the ones that were on the planet Master Chief was drifting towards in the Legendary ending. This could just be a hint on what Bungie's next proper game would be (Reach), or it might go deeper than that. Agreed on some decent titles coming from EA this gen too. Neither of these consoles will be ever as fun as the SNES was. One problem with that, the Reach is set before Halo 1 and the planet Master Chief drifts to is at the end of Halo 3.
I don't think we'll see Master Chief's fate for a while yet. I loved my SNES. It worked. You can tell by the way either handles their games that the PS3 has more power in it. It also doesn't break every couple of months. I have both consoles and I'm yet to see a game on 360 that compares to some of Sony's graphically impressive titles such as Killzone 2.
I'm fairly sure that all these hardware failures such as the RRoD and E74 will only get worse as they push the limited hardware of the 360 harder and harder. Time will tell. »

On-topic, from what I saw at E3, I'll hold off on the PS3 until the end of next year. I was impressed by the 360 line-up and it looks like it will hold it's own against the PS3 for another year yet. Devs used to to say the same about megadrive & snes
they said the md could not do Street fighter but it did & just as good as snes (apart from sound quality) the 360 has games that match the PS3's & I cannot see that changing anytime soon.
Like I said in my previous post a few pages back I think MS are looking at the possability of streaming the games like the onlive service to 360 directly & the streaming of full HD movies is their starting point if they can get a good realiable streaming of full hd films then the games is the next logical step & that means theoretically they could stream games running on much more powerful servers direct to the 360. I own both consoles and if anything about E3 has got me excited its project Natal. If game devs embrace this we could see some really good game inovations in the next few years. There was nothing in the Sony line up that really got me excited, the more I see of Heavy Rain and God of War 3 the more disapointed I feel.

Now most of those are xbxox exclusives, FF XIII I will probably get for the PS3 for the simple fact it will be on one disk. I agree with MS they won this E3 hands down, if they can get all the stuff they showed to work Sony will be playing catch up once again. Not everyone. I recently bought a Jasper chipset Xbox 360 precisely because I wanted to try and avoid overheating which can lead to the dreaded RRoD. I also find it utterly disgraceful that MS was adviced by its own development teams that the current DVD drive could scratch the discs if moved, etc. and that at least two alternative solutions could be implemented yet this was ignored by management. While MS is obligated to honour it's warranty I still commend them for not trying to delay or side-step the responsibility and cost of paying for the transport, replacement and return transport for Xbox 360s. Sony doesn't btw; that'll cost you a lovely 150 quid from what some have stated on this forum.
Is MS saintly? I don't think so, but with the customer adjustable console packages they offer along with much more reasonable console prices compared to it's competitors - especially Sony's PS3 - I'm delighted by the fun factor and comfort I now experience when I sit down with the superbly light and ergonomic wireless Xbox 360 controller. Perhaps the PS3 controller is fine as well, but I haven't tried it and shape-wise it looks like it would be less likely to fit in my hands as comfortably. Because I'm aware of the high rate of technical issues the Xbox 360 has experienced, I signed up for a small monthly insurance payment that covers extensive damage and entitles me to a complete refund of the original price I paid for my new Xbox 360.
I had actually considered the PS3 as well, and even the Wii albeit not as much simply because it's only recently I've started noticing a few Wii games that look of interest to me (others tastes may vary and that's OK too). However, because Sony has been dragging its feet in regards to a industry wide and a large customer base demand for a price cut they've lost out on my business; both for the console and, more importantly long term wise, all the games I will purchase during the lifetime of my current affair with the Xbox 360 console.
Now back on topic: Am I the only one that read the line from the guy being interviewed in which he stated that his personal favourite console to play on is the Xbox 360? How does that make him a PS3 fanboy as some have claimed on this thread? OK, maybe he is spin doctoring in the role as an EA employee or maybe not. Personally I'm not in a strong position to determine whether any of the consoles have reached their full potential. I doubt very many of us on this forum are to be frank. It makes me a little uneasy to think that the maximum potential has been reached for any of the consoles as I like to see the impressive results of developers pushing the envelope. Yet as others have posted on this thread, even if that is the case that doesn't mean that existing games will cease to exist nor that new games won't be developed which will still look great and, perhaps more importantly, also be fun to play. The difference here is that the Megadrive didn't break and need repairing when its hardware was put under prolonged, intense use. The RRoD and I think the E74, which have remarkably similar symptoms, and are probably caused by the same failure, are due to the heating up and cooling down of the 360's solder joints. In theory it will become more of a problem as games become more demanding.
Retro gaming is something that doesn't have a bright future for the 360 because once all the extended warranties run out people are going to have to start paying for these fixes out of their own pockets. I think you're right about them streaming games from XBL eventually. They're going to have to to keep their gaming line alive in the future, on future consoles. Hehehe! Thank you kindly! My PC is still one of my "babies" and there are games I will continue to get for it - notably FPSs & Strategy since the mouse+keyboard combination is more accurate. That said, other folks were right! It's such a comfort to sit on a good couch or TV chair and play on a 42" LCD TV with a wireless controller that feels extremely light weight and avoids feeling flimsy! :D »»
I would have to disagree with the weight of the 360 wireless controller, it is heavy compared to the PS3 one, although my PS3 controller has no rumble. :D Some people seem to think that this guy is a developer so he knows what he is talking about.The article says he is the Vice president. So has probably never worked on a game on his life.
The only time this suit has worked in studio was at DICE Canada which he closed down straight away. He's not the first to say it. Epic have commented on this as well, they've been writing gaming engines for a lot of years so I'm thinking they *do* know what they're talking about. I'm pretty sure mine won't last that long. I've never had one that's lasted more than a year without redlighting. My dvd tray on my Elite went just on the right side of the warranty so I was lucky this time.
It's the one thing that really screwed Microsoft this gen, rushing it out has made a lot of people cynical and only the most blinkered xbox zealot would ignore that.
I love my xbox, even if I get a PS3 the xbox will be my main machine. However I really don't know if I'll want to buy another one when my current craps out. If I do then it better be sub 100 quid by then. cringe... Maybe it's their engine that they claim uses 100% of the machines resources (ND with Drakes 2 say the same with the PS3). In time better engines etc will blow away the U3 and Drakes engine, of course only time will tell. 8) »
I hope they don't go on for that long but anything is possible when you consider that the PS2 has been around, and is still going, for over 10 years now. I do like my Xbox but every single person I know that owns one has had a problem with it. Even my girlfriend, who owns an Elite, has just had the RoD just recently (clearly not so elite), It's not a case of if they go wrong - it's when.
The build quality of the Playstation is just a lot better, they could do with making a release of it that doesn't come with everything inclusive though so people can actually afford them without re-mortgaging their houses. :p
There is that, it does depend hugely on the coding for the engine, but Epic's engines are usually not all that demanding. I'm no expert though I do know that turning a few settings down will allow UT Tech 3 to run on a not very costly PC. I agree, everybody I know has had problems with their xboxes.
What's funny is that despite the problems we stay with Microsoft. If Sony's console was the same price I wonder how many of us would've jumped ship.....?

ON the whole maxing out a console front. Its a pointless and stupid argument. If they've figured out how best to programme for the 360, then i say great. We'll get games that look good and run smooth, But considering Nintendo and others are still squeezing juice out of the wii, i find it hard to believe.

I thought it was always known the PS3 was more powerful, just a question of how much more (turns out not that much). Doesn't matter to me. It's been said time and again, most powerful console doesn't make it the best.
Although I agree, the PS3 is in line for some very good looking games. But just because games are exclusive, doesn't mean they will be awesome, and this applies across all platforms. e.g. I have a sneaking suspicion Alan Wake is going to be shit.

I was playing GRID on my flatmate's PS3 only last night and whilst it does look pretty darn good I could've sworn it used to look a bit better on my 360. Funny that. The KFD case finally has a console and can now base his opinions on his own actual experience.

Although based on the copious amounts of fanboy drivel one can find on this forum it should be abundantly clear that ownership of any of the consoles does not automatically grant clear insight into whichever console is being discussed. Conversely, taking the time to develop an informed opinion about any, and/or all, of the consoles through reading/research of reputable sources can make a hell of a difference. You should try it sometime, Petrolhead. You might be astounded at how enlightening it can be. What would EA know? they dont even know how to make a decent game for any console! the only decent game i played by EA was BF:BC ok, correct me if im wrong... but (do i even need to finish the sentence?!) I don't suppose you could give us a little technical data on that? I for one would like to know why a eight core processor is needed for movie playback (granted one is disabled to improve chip yield and another is dedicated to the OS, so techically it's only six, but six synergistic processing elements... for movie playback?), it seems a little overkill, no? |
