Activision sues Double Fine over Brutal Legend

Publisher hopes to stop rival EA from publishing the game
Activision has sued Brutal Legend developer Double Fine Productions in a bid to stop the title being released.

According to an Associated Press report, the lawsuit claims that Double Fine transferred rights owned by the publisher to its rival EA, which plans to release the title later this year.

Activision says that it invested around $15 million in the action adventure title and still has a right to release the game.

The chances of the game ever being released was previously put in question after Activision dropped a number of titles from the Sierra publishing label following its merger with Vivendi Games.

After losing its publishing deal with Sierra, Double Fine teamed with EA Partners to publish the title, which has comedian Jack Black playing the main character.

Responding to Activision's suit, Double Fine president Tim Schafer told Kotaku: "Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it. Oh great, now Beyoncé is going to sue me too."

If this happens I'll be disappointed. Watched the trailer on Live and it really impressed me. It seems Tim Schaffer can't get a break. :(

What a bunch of absolute *******s.

If they cared that muchthen they should have just guarenteed to publish it in the first place!

You cant just change your mind when the game starts to look good!

Kinda reminds me of letting a girl go, only to see her with someone else looking fine!

Ive said it many times on here before. Activision are the new EA.

I remember reading their CEO talking about dropping franchises that couldnt produce a yearly iteration.

Its such a killer that they will be publishing MW:2, as Im trying to avoid giving them money.

Boo Activision, Boo!

Activision have stooped to a new low.

I think Activision are just sore losers, I mean if it was sports, i.e. football, a team can't sue another team because the player they sold them is now playing brilliantly. I can't see Activision getting anything in court except a hefty bill, they dropped the game and if someone else (EA) hadn't agreed to publish it they'd still be getting nothing back anyway. Idiots

Oof!! THAT definitely burns when that happens :)

Due to the Jack Black connection, I have to say

GO, ACTIVISION, GO!!

I can appreciate it being a bitter pill for Activision to swallow after having forked out 15 million, yet it was their decision to drop it. Sounds like a case of sour grapes to me.

Brutal Legend has been in development under the EA Publishing for quite some months now, Why have they decided to sue them right now?, Just before its release date?, when they could of done it say, a few months ago?

Activision is slowly getting lamer as they have moved with Blizzard, which everyone knows are money gobblers. They are learning a few dirty habbits of Blizzard, is all I can say.

And if it wasnt for MW2, I would not be buying anything from Activision.

They actually did. It was a few months ago that Activision started with this crap. Ricittelo (sp?) of EA said at that time that he thinks it's as ridiculous as "a husband abandoning his family and then suing after his wife meets a better looking guy."

Lately I'm really starting to like EA, but Activision... oh Activision... a bunch of losers.

Maybe I'm just shallow (or misinformed) but I can't bring myself to boycott large companies.

I don't think I can name one major corporation that hasn't done something that I think "that's out of line" and yet if I refused all of their products I'd miss out on so much.

MS are gits but I like my 360, Sony are gits but I like my PS3, Disney are gits but Miramax make some good films etc etc etc.

Activision are acting like spoiled children here, but refuse to buy MW:2? No chance. I may have sold out but will still enjoy my gaming! :)

so may i ask why EA has come back into favour as of late... they make a few decent choices and the world forgets what ****s they've been in the past?

It's more like they have changed their evil ways and are now pumping out quality games.
