WiiWare is 'easier' than XBLA

Swords & Soldiers dev explains why it opted for WiiWare
Developer of well-received WiiWare game Swords & Soldiers has explained why it opted for Nintendo's service rather than Xbox Live Arcade: because it's easier.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Ronimo Games' Fabian Akker said: "It's so easy to get your games out there! It's much harder on Xbox Live. It was tough at first to get a license from Nintendo - we were just kids from school - but THQ helped us a lot.

"It's an open platform, it's relatively cheap and it gives you loads of freedom," he said. "And the Wii controls are perfect for the game. I found it really weird that there were no RTS games on the Wii. The Remote's pointer is perfect for the genre."

Akker said that for the same reasons Ronimo will probably stick with WiiWare for its next game: "It's [download games] definitely the future. Our next game will probably be on WiiWare too."

I have really enjoyed a lot of Wiiware games like Lost Wind, World of Goo and Defend your Castle, this new game looks good too and I think Wiiware has to be the most positive part of the Wii experience so far.

It also looks like retail Wii games are picking up too with some great games like the Conduit and Monster Hunter 3, I am hoping E3 will delver too.

Easier to get a game on WiiWare than XBLA? Surely this doesn't mean Nintendo have relaxed their quality standards, and are allowing just anything to be released on Wii. Why, you'd end up with a catalogue mostly consisting of low quality games and shovelware!

...oh, wait. :?

maybe easier as the graphical limits are lower? dunno

thanks for reminding me about world of goo - i'm just downloading it now, it looks awesome.

I think as there are far less games on WiiWare than on XBLA its much eaiser to get your game noticed. You are developing on older tech with all the tricks of the hardware well documented. There are also things when you have to devlop games to run in HD & SD which means things like font size as to be of a certain type(I think its type 12 or 19) I remember that from the XNA documentation.

Considering a large majority of Wiiware games are utter shovelware garbage, I don't doubt his statement.

I could count the worthwhile games on 1 hand.

Thats what I've been thinking.

Much like all the consoles this generation. Look at x-box live arcade for instance! Plus PS3 has it's fair share of utter rubbish too.

Having said that I have been spoilt with Bit.Trip Beat, Swords and soldiers on the wii and Outrun online on the xbox in the last few weeks.

I also agree with them about RTS games, the wii is a perfect console platform for them along with point and click adventure games.

That WiiWare - it'll sleep with anyone.
