DJ Hero tracklist unearthed

DJ Shadow, Jurassic 5 and... David Bowie?!
More details and a partial tracklist for Activision's DJ Hero have emerged, via the latest issue of (what else?) US mag Game Informer.

In addition to the turntable controller we've already seen, the music spin-off includes s second, clip-on 'mixer' which includes a cross-fader, effects dial and a "Euphoria button", which replaces Guitar Hero's Star Power.

The game works similar to Guitar Hero, says the mag, except this time there are only three notes cascading down the screen at you. In addition to have to hit the notes you also need to have the cross-fader in the right position - and the odd scratching section crops up too.

And here's the most important bit, the partial tracklist, which consists mostly of mash-ups:

  • "Feel Good Inc." (Gorillaz) vs "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Marvin Gaye)
  • "Jayou" (Jurassic 5) vs "Rockit" (Herbie Hancock)
  • "Bustin' Loose" (Chuck Brown) vs "Time of the Season" (The Zombies, DJ Shadow Mix)
  • "All Apologies" (Nirvana) vs "Give It to Me Baby" (Rick James, DJ Shadow Mix)
  • "Let's Dance" (David Bowie) vs "Jack of Spades" (KRS One, DJ Shadow Mix)
  • "Shout" (Tears for Fears) vs "Pjanoo" (Eric Prydz)

Check back for more from us on this around E3.

Thanks, Kotaku

well that's terrible, in my opinion. I would like to see some Human Blue, Ovnimoon, Wizzy Noise, URecken, Astrix etc. you get what genre I like.

Just mash-ups? And of actual songs as opposed to proper euphoria songs? Come on Activision, what the hell! At least let us play our own songs in some kind 'free style mode' like Lips did alongside the DLC songs (which is a given).

garbage.. how about some classics instead of cheap self-promoting bootlegs.

your supposed to be mixing individual tracks into each other. having 2 tracks mashed up into one would be confusing enough for your average punter... but i guess no actual mixing goes on in this game.

what a shock announcement. the traclist for DJ hero is shit. For dance fans and people that like actual music too. Mashups are a ****ing blight,

what do you mean actual music you little worm?!

dance IS music.

it is the genre truest to the original form of music.

ever since the africans invented music battering away intricate patterns on their bongos, it would get them in a 'trance' through repetition and crescendos.

the exact way electronic dance or trance works to lift you to a higher place. indeed tribal is a popular form of EDM.

also a good dance producer does everything himself or herself.

most rock bands have seperate producers or added effects and certainly outsourced digital mastering, which the EDM artist also deals with themselves.

trance uses phil spectors wall of sound technique for layers of emotion.

rock on the other hand is some prik wailing into a mic with a ripped t-shirt and stupid haircut.

omg that sounds absolutly shit am sorry bt i thought that there would b a decent amount of hardcore classics there might be some in the final game bt omg David Bowie?!?!?!?!? a would have thought Scott Brown,Hixxy,Styles,Sy,Dougal n Gammer
would be heavily featured seen as they're some of the best dj's in the world

when this game comes out if it doesnt come with big DLC like a hardcore album for free i will b so annoyed !!!!

need 2 find out the full track listing if im to buy this game because as it stands sounds terrible to me

hardcore is a disgrace to dance.

the faster the bpm the easier it is to mix.

hixxy and co aint talents in the dj world.

go hang yourself.... and david bowie is a legend. lets dance is a classic. has the vice city vibe.

Good grief svd, whilst you have some good points about the rather obtuse statement about "actual music" and the end-to-end approach to song writing / production by electronic musicians, you then manage to sound like a complete idiot by generalising rock music; a style which in itself has similarly african roots through blues and jazz and when done well is just as capable of raising your consciousness.

Rock music can be cliched for sure (too often in fact), but then most four-to-the-floor dance music is usually constructed from its own set of established conventions also. Indeed, in many ways a dance DJ depends on these conventions being followed in order to create mixes in their chosen sub-genre.

I'm not sure why anyone was specifically expecting a dance music game anyway. I was more expecting stuff like DJ Shadow (Walkie Talkie would be ace) or Coldcut, as those guys use the turntable as an instrument. Otherwise you'd just be queuing up and mixing tracks every three or four minutes. Either way, mash-ups are a cheap option.

most club tracks are 8mins long. 3-4 mins is the average length of a rock song.

the fact EDM is constant is soley what makes it mixable. using that as a detractory factor is foolish.

doesnt need a 4/4 beat to mix. you can use the percussion just as easy. well not as easy, if your skilled.

and breakbeat does away with the 4/4 beat and is still mixable but less 'pounding'.

rock is less african compared to dance as it doesnt get you in a trance. unless your talking about a 13 min drum solo of moby dick by the animal.

but generally dance is more pattern based. its the patterns which induce the trance effect.

Happy Hardcore?!! You want Happy Hardcore.!?! HAHAHAHAH

Go on the Psy-Trance!!!

Although the David Bowie "lets dance" mix is good for the plastic club scene, the rest of those songs are garbage.

Wheres the true dance?
Wheres the Trance?
Wheres the Euphoric hair raising dance till you drop?

I originally loved this DJ idea untill I saw that turntable and track listlisting.

Honestly, why don't they let you buy the game, and with that game you get 5 token tracks and a voucher to download the track pack of your choice from Live/PSN. That way they can cater for everyone, quite frankly I wouldn't want to have to put up with uplifting trance but I am perfectly understanding of the fact that hip hop or drum and bass aren't to other peoples tastes either.

Let us by the extra track packs as we see fit later on.

problem solved.

Agree that half arsed mashup/bootlegs are not what any one is interested in though.

doesn't look too bad really, nice to see J5 and shadow in there. i'm guessing the reason they're all mash ups is because you'll get the songs in pairs and mix between them... good point about having people who use the turntable as an instrument, just playing a few tunes in a row would be dull.

and as for all this trance, original africa, 'truest' rubbish. pah. don't get me started. and if you can show me more than five dance producers who don't master their records with another engineer, i'll be shocked.

theres 10 bud, feel free to prove me wrong on any one of them, i could name another 10. they all pretty much do their own mastering. except for the biggest names. i.e. tiesto, armin.

if you can engineer a track from the ground up, mastering is a walk in the park. fool.

and mixing tracks is an art. you can use the TT as an instrument, but mostly its the mixer you use, the xfader to chop and transform, filter, punch, LFO etc etc. but mostly its about mixing the right song into the next, building up a progressional set and moving through a variety of genres, all in key.

e.g.

house - prog - breakbeat - techno - tech trance -trance - hard trance - hard house.

in a 6 hour set you could go from 130bpm up to 150bpm, through tons of styles. its like a jigsaw.

No doubt Activision will be bringing out genre packs for this DJ Hero, so stop the squabbling! I know a hiphop one would be very popular.
