Radio 1 does "Big Gaming Weekend"

Listeners to vote for "best game ever"
BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra are to hold a "Big Gaming Weekend" between May 22 and 25, where their collective viewers will vote to find "the best game ever".

Industry experts (one of which is us) have provided lists of their top 100 games for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, from which listeners will then be invited to pick their top three and vote for their favourites online.

Scott Mills will launch the poll on Friday May 22 between 6.30am and 10am and the results will be revealed on Bank Holiday Monday during Mistajam's show which is simulcast on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra between 7pm and 10pm.

Next weekend's events will also include game tunes - chosen by both listeners and the DJ's - on the radio, reviews and gaming leaderboards between Radio 1's superstar DJs.

Feel free to tune in.

That's kinda cool, though I can imagine the list is going to be way off like it has been a lot recently in games journalist top 100s.

It's going to be Mario or Zelda. I just know it.

**** off radio 1, you know nothing about music, let alone games.

Radio 1? Ugh....

I can garauntee this will be a casual gamer fest and have NOTHING to do with the real gaming industry. Besides, Radio 1? Who the hell still listens to that drivel?

It has to be Ocarina of Time, the perfect game which hasnt yet become outdated but then there is the MGS series and Mario 64.
One of my favourite all time games which I doubt is on the list is Final Fantasy 9 (far better then 7)

I don't have a problem with Radio 1 as they always play a relatively good mix of different genres.

It'd be interesting to see what a music oriented audience will think of games.

Sure, us gamers know all the secret little gems out there and would vote for them, but with music fans and people who listen to the shows while at work or revising, it'd be an interesting little study.

Sadly, because of the Radio 1 demographic, the winner is pretty much already set. GTA.

So by "Big weekend" they mean "big three hours". Awesome.
Posted by humorguy
Agree - either GTA IV, or Mario or Sonic.

Certainly nothing older than 2008,and absolutely certainly not X-Com, System Shock or Half Life!

BROKEN SWORD IS GONNA WIN!!! OH YEAH

Let me be clear:

It's wrong that Radio 1 are the hosts.
It's wrong that just 1 game is being singled out, pitting epic adventure against deliberately short and tightly focussed games, racing game against platform game, chalk against cheese.
It's wrong that such a delicate question that takes in to account such nuances as aesthetics, level design, deep metaphors, characterisation, story, is being decided by a gaping mass of people whose qualifications for giving judgement have never been monitored over something called a 'Big Weekend'.
It's wrong that, rather than someone like Miyamoto, or someone from Rare, giving the result, it will be someone who, until a few years ago, may, on the balance of probabilities unless proven otherwise in my kangaroo court, have called an Xbox 'one of those Playstation thingies'.
You know it's wrong.
I know it's wrong.
And I think Radio 1 and their prospective voters might even have a glimpse in to the wrongness of it.

But part of us still loves complaining about things like this so they are giving us what we want. And if it was a real event called a 'Big Weekend' I'd go- and I'd enjoy myself.

Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Ico- these are some of the usual suspects that people who have played videogames for a long time- or even for a short time- allow to easily roll off the tongue. But I am suspicious of the reasoning sometimes for such choices, particularly when they complement these epic games with a simple puzzle game like Tetris. Being the first of its kind doesn’t necessarily make it the best. I much preferred playing Banjo Kazooie to Mario 64. And there are loads of 2D platformers that don’t have ‘Mario’ or Sonic’ in the title that I have loved. Anyway- here’s my top 11 at the moment, in no particular order, removing anything from before the 16 bit age for reasons of space. Half Life 2 isn't quite good enough I'm afraid, even though it has some great parts.

1. Bioshock
2. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
3. Banjo Kazooie
4. Jet Set Radio
5. Crazy Taxi
6. Resident Evil Gamecube remake
7. Metroid Prime
8. World of Illusion
9. Donkey Kong Country
10. Crash Team Racing
11. The Curse of Monkey Island
Why does this article say 'collective viewers' by the way? Most people are listeners to the radio.

People who listen to radio 1 tend to listen to rap, RnB, dance music and other rubbish and also probably not regular gamers so you will see all the football games and racing games in their votes therefore the test will be pointless and irelevant.

I wouldn't put Bioshock in my top 100 games played never mind number one, but herein lies the problem, its all based on opinion and is largely pointless. It does however give some heavily accented, barely comprehensible, "yoof", down with the kids DJ something to talk about for ten minutes. These lists are a massive waste of time.

Sounds awesome. I love Radio 1. :D

You know its gonna be an idiotic shit-fest. Im sure it can't be any worse than the 2006 Video Game Bafta's. History of gaming? Vernan Kay? Oh and if either the aforementioned Kay or that London Geezar-Twat that claimed to be a gamer backstage at the 2006 show turn up...im nail-bombing it.

I've never understood why anyone takes an interest in top 100 anything based on opinions. As much as I don't care what the gamer's top 10 games are, I know no one would (or should have any reason to) care what my top 10 games are.

So unless you find yourself continually asking anyone you know what their favourite games are, why would you care? Saying that, perhaps if we were given the actual sales figures, that would be more interesting. But otherwise, all that matters to me is what I like and I don't care whether people have the same opinion or not. It's such a strange thing to care about. As pointless as any other Top 100 surveys.

If they have game music they have to have some Tim Wright aka Cold Storage. Some great gaming tunes done by this man.

Dear God,
I'm actually rather angry C&VG seem to be participating is such a transparent publicity stunt. The obvious reason for this is to boost a few ratings figures and nothing more.

Do Radio 1 have any plans for ongoing gaming coverage? No.
Is it even that good an idea to have coverage of games on the radio? No.
Will anybody remember what the top 10 are, let alone the top 100, in a years time? No.

They've figured out that the people who are big gaming fans aren't listening to the shows in question - you don't really think they picked the shows at random do you? - and they think they can maybe get a few to 'stick' if they can convince them to listen to three hours of it in the hope of getting something they're actually interested in.

Let's be blunt here - Radio 1's top 100 games is no more relevant to the world than my or your top 100 games and nobody gives a damn about them.

This kind of utterly shallow, cynical, bandwagon jumping idiocy is why I stopped bothering to listen to Radio 1 some time ago. Besides anything, with spotify and the like, who needs Radio 1 at all anymore?

Glad to see you got such and inclusive attitude...

How can you write off someones opinion just because of the music or football team they support? Ok we know it probably be a casual/popularist vote but I think your generalisations are worse.

Sonic Cd, Pal version(with the better music),although I am perhaps a little biased! Either that or Oblivion!

Radio 1's gaming weekend sounds kinda cool. There should be a permanent radio station for this kinda thing. I hope they play some Soldner X music that weekend. That game has to have one of the best soundtracks to have come out recently.

"BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra are to hold a "Big Gaming Weekend" between May 22 and 25, where their collective viewers will vote to find "the best game ever"."

wow, i can't wait to be viewing my radio for that one. jeez, who wrote this? schoolboy error

People who slag off Radio 1 really don't have a clue how much effort goes into the station. You say they know nothing about music, but by that you mean that they don't play music that appeals to your taste. And even that is a shallow perception, as while the daytime shows may not appeal, I'm pretty sure you can find something you like from the stark contrasts of the evening and weekend shows.

It's a very difficult balance to please as many people as possible. A few years ago, they weren't too good at playing anything but pop, but in the last few years they've really done well to try and cater for a variety of tastes - even on the daytime shows. Rock and indie are getting a much better look-in these days, and giving these new bands a good platform to launch a career should be applauded.

This gaming weekend is far from a shallow publicity stunt. They are trying to reach a broader audience and get people involved which can only be a good thing. It would be a big risk to dive in and do a full-on gaming weekend at a venue. Surely if feedback from this is positive, it will become an annual and increasingly larger event.

For them to be able to pull off Europe's largest FREE music festival shows how well they can organise these events.
