Strategic Ministry Planning (SMP)

Making Faith-Based Decisions for Ministry

As a leader in the church, you want to make good decisions. LCEF Strategic Ministry Planning is about making good decisions—decisions that foster a congregation’s spiritual and numerical growth.

The Services of Strategic Ministry Planning are based on these premises:
LCEF’s Strategic Ministry Planning differs from other planning processes in that it is:
  • We seek our agenda from God the Father instead of consultants.
  • We trust God the Son to set the example for our actions instead of basing our decisions on other congregations.
  • We rely on God the Holy Spirit for our direction instead of relying on focus groups and surveys.

Learn more about faith-based decisions by watching the Strategic Ministry Planning videos.

  • Designed by Lutherans for Lutherans.
  • Grounded in the Word of God and bound by LCMS doctrine.
  • A faith-based process.
  • About the work (calling) of the congregation.
  • Committed to a comprehensive plan.

Approaching 150th Anniversary with New Vision

As the congregation at St. John Lutheran Church and School, Darien, Ill., decided to remodel and update the church, it decided to really analyze its needs for the facility. To do that, it used Lutheran Church Extension Fund’s (LCEF) Strategic Ministry Planning. “It was a matter of saying, ‘Let’s start at the beginning and make sure we have our house in order, lay the foundation first.’” said Kathy McClain, St. John’s business manager.

St. John’s leadership approached the design team with a purpose and vision. Now that the plan is in place and renovations are complete, they have shifted their focus to an important milestone: the church’s 150th anniversary later this year.

Laborers Assist in Addition at Grace Evangelical in El Centro, Calif.

Laborers For Christ was asked to assist the congregation at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, El Centro, Calif., to add nearly 1,000 square feet to its original Spanish-style church, which now serves as its fellowship center, Janke Hall. The congregation uses the hall for church and community meetings, classes, and social events. It also has a satellite worship site at the Hispanic Outreach Center in El Centro.

St. Paul Dedicates New Education Building

In November, the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in Concordia, Mo., dedicated its new education building. It will house the lower grades of the school, as well as the school administrative offices. An upper floor remains unfinished and will provide space for future expansion. LCEF is a proud partner to the congregation as St. Paul’s members seek to provide quality space for better outreach to the community and service.

Investments Help Create New Space, Renewed Spirit

This spring, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay, Wisc., members will mark the one-year dedication anniversary of their 14,000-sq.-ft. worship and education facility, which also includes an inviting coffee and snack area. With the creation of the new space, the congregation is rejuvenated, Pastor Nathan Lewis said, and members seek ministry partnerships with food pantries, group homes, clinics, work places for people with special needs, resource centers for those with mental illnesses, and youth clubs. LCEF was blessed to partner with Prince of Peace to fund the expansion.

Peace Available to College Students

Peace Lutheran in Eau Claire, Wisc., has been blessed with a growing congregation over the years, but as the Holy Spirit continued to bring people to Peace, it became apparent the church would have to embark on its third building project in 20 years. LCEF partnered with Peace by providing funding. Part of the growth stems from the congregation’s outreach to college students. It offers various worship styles, a user-friendly Web site, and video and multimedia options for them to use to hear God’s message.

New Services Support Church Functionality, Vitality

LCEF is committed to the ministry of building strong churches—and not just in a physical sense. We’re here to help church membership grow in spirit, mission, and membership.

There are two new workshops your congregation may wish to use: Building and Believing Workshop, a weekend of renewal in which congregations select a noted LCMS clergy to lead the discussions; and MissionFlex, a one-day workshop for creating a flexible constitution.

Discover God’s Plan for Your Congregation

Strategic Ministry Planning is a faith-based process, asking congregation members to seek their agenda from God. Strategic Ministry Planning is a fully participatory process that is different from other planning processes in that it is designed by Lutherans for Lutherans, grounded in the Word, about the calling of the congregation, and creates a comprehensive plan.

At the completion of the initial Strategic Ministry Planning process, an organization has a clearer focus on its ministry. It also provides members with a three-year strategic ministry plan; demographic study; site and facility review; and clear priorities with a defined timeline.

SMP Working With Redeemer Lutheran Church, Las Vegas, Nevada

The pastor at Redeemer said the great thing about SMP is that the lay people continually focus on their "best understanding of God's calling and plan" for them. If they are having a meeting and decisions are being made, someone in the group will usually call attention to their SMP and say, "Remember our plan. Is this decision a part of our plan? Is this the direction that God's calling and plan for us is pointing?"
