Help Build Churches—Become a NAILS Student Laborer For Christ

Interested in helping a church build its facilities?

Student Laborers For Christ are Christian college and seminary students who do physical labor for Christ, working for congregations and other church-related organizations of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to build churches, schools, parish halls, retirement homes, camp facilities, etc.

STUDENT LABORERS FOR CHRIST ENROLLMENT FORM
INFORMATION NEEDED TO APPLY

Are you interested in spending a few weeks or months with fellow Christians who enjoy furthering the Lord’s work? Download and complete the online enrollment form, get the appropriate signatures, and mail to:

Lutheran Church Extension Fund
ATTN: NAILS Enrollment Coordinator
P.O. Box 229009
St. Louis, MO 63122-9009

The enrollment form asks for general information including a pastor’s or school official’s signature, information about skills, work history, and medical condition(s). Once accepted to the roster, the student’s name is entered into a database and a resume is compiled. When an enrolled member indicates a willingness to work for a specific congregation project, this resume is forwarded to the congregation and serves as a basis for its decision on who the congregation will hire for a particular project.

For more information about the NAILS program or about becoming a Student Laborer For Christ, contact LCEF.

Where will I live?

Housing for a NAILS participant is determined by the participating LCMS organization that selects the student for employment. Student Laborers will be contacted by the participating organization’s representative with housing details. In most cases where the project is at a congregation, the students will be invited to stay with members of the congregation.

How do I get there? Do I need a car?

Travel to and from the project location (city/ state) is the student’s responsibility. (Some reimbursement of travel expenses may be available from the congregation, depending on your length of service.) Daily travel to the project site is also the student’s responsibility, though the participating congregation may be willing to make accommodations.

Who is my employer?

NAILS participants are employed by the LCMS church, school, or organization whose project they are helping to complete. All onsite labor is coordinated and supervised by a Laborers For Christ project manager also employed by the church, school, or organization.

How many hours do I work each week?

The normal work week is 40 hours. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with Sunday and Monday off. Working Saturday gives congregation members an opportunity to participate in the work effort and for Laborers and members to partner in ministry.

How long is the work commitment?

Students who join NAILS to work for organizations participating in the Laborers For Christ Program are asked to commit to working a minimum of two weeks.

Who decides which project I go to?

The decision starts with you. On the Web site is a list of upcoming projects. Indicate the organizations or congregations for which you are willing to work by completing the sign-up form. A list of willing workers is forwarded to each organization and calls are issued for the number of workers needed. As the time to begin construction approaches, the organization will contact you to verify your availability to work.

How much do I get paid?

NAILS participants, like all Laborers For Christ managers and workers, are employed by the LCMS church, school, or organization whose project they help to complete, and are paid minimum wage, as governed by the laws of the state in which the project is located.

What about meals?

Meals are your responsibility. However, organizations are invited (but not required) to provide a meal at noon on Saturday or any other work day. Organizations often provide some food to promote fellowship. Additionally, because participants in the NAILS program are likely to be staying in the homes of church members, some meals are likely to be provided there.
