Set of four WW2 Australian army buttons with full range from greatcoat to officer cap sizes.
Until the late 1960s buttons were issued in metals that needed polishing. Obviously it was not viable to remove all the buttons from a uniform on each occasion that the buttons lost their shine. (With brass that took about 24 hours). This was the way around the problem.

This is a brass protector for sliding behind buttons on a uniform so that the buttons can be cleaned or polished without getting the Brasso brand cleaner onto the uniform. It is marked Stokes & Sons, and comes with its original leather case marked Timbers 1934 plus a broad arrow (this marks it as official issue).

Each Sovereign has his/her own special "mark" called a cypher. In the UK it is common to use the cypher of the reigning monarch on a General Service button. Some are shown below.

  • As well a the "cypher" buttons there were some that used the Guelphic Crown as a mark of respect to Queen Victoria's Consort, Prince Albert.
  • The Guelphic Crown was also used on some Australian badges

Australian Intelligence Corps buttons.
