Badges & Medals of the 3rd Reich Page 3
  • Many more badges of rank etc at "Germany"

The "Flower Wars" medals.

Before WW2 Hitler's Germany was involved in 3 military actions that were almost bloodless because of the Allies reluctance to do anything that might spark a war and in some cases because pockets of the populations involved actively in helping because they saw Hitler as better than what they had or because they considered themselves as German.

The 3 medals all had the same obverse with a date on the reverse. The 3 actions were the Annexation of Austria, occupation of the Sudentenland paving the road for the annexation of Czechoslovakia and the "Return of Memel"

Each one had a different ribbon.

On 1 May 1938, Adolph Hitler instituted the Commemorative Medal of 13 March 1938 to be awarded to all persons, military and civilian who actively contributed to the annexation of Austria. A total of 318,689 medals had been awarded when the last one was manufactured on 31 December 1940.The medal was worn over the left breast pocket.

  • This the THIRD REICH 1st OCTOBER 1938 medal is the 2nd in a series of 3 Medals, the 1st OKTOBER having been awarded to those WEHRMACHT & WAFFEN SS SOLDIERS for the occupation of the Sudentenland paving the road for the annexation of Czechoslovakia, with the famous Hitler speech on the reverse, Ein Volk Ein Reich Ein Fuhrer.
  • That loosely translates to 1 people, 1 country, 1 leader.

It was also presented to all those who later participated in the creation of the protectorates of Bohemia and Moravia.

For those who had received the Medal and took part in those events, a bronze Bar (see above) was approved on May 1, 1939. This Bar featured the Prague Castle on the obverse with two triangular prongs in the back, which held it on the ribbon.

Return of Memel medal

Commemorating the return to Germany of the Memel District.

This East Prussian territory was awarded to Lithuania following the Memel Convention in 1924.

This medal awarded to all persons who actively participated in this bloodless campaign.

WWII PARADE MOUNTED MEDALS - very interesting grouping that probably belonged to a Political Leader who saw no combat but was involved early on with the Nazi Party and its early invasions.
  • First medal is a War Merit Cross without swords and looks like it may have been the last medal placed on the bar. This one also has the hanging ring sewn to the ribbon with lots of black thread sewn around it trying to hide it.
  • Next one is a 10 year N.S.D.A.P. (NAZI Party) membership, this is the bronze medal with the brown and white ribbon.
  • Next is an Entry into the Sudentenland Medal, this one is different in that it is not bronze but struck from aluminium with Prague Castle bar.
  • Annexation of Austria Commemorative Medal, 1938.

Two examples of the 'Hitler Medals" issued, mostly pre war, for political purposes as Hitler rose to supreme power.
  • The West Wall Medal: instituted on August 2nd, 1939, to recognize those who designed and built the fortifications on Germany's western borders and the troops who were stationed there prior to May 1940.
  • The medal was struck in bronzed brass. Its oval shape featured on the obverse (from bottom to top) a bunker, a crossed sword and shovel, and the German Eagle.
  • On the reverse it bore the inscription "Fur Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands" (For Work in the Protection/Defence of Germany). The awarding of this Medal stopped on January 31, 1941, at which time 622,064 had been awarded.
  • Winter (or Russian) Campaign Medal awarded to German soldiers that participated in the eastern front campaign in the winter of 1941-42. The inscription on the back reads “WINTERSCHLACHT IMOSTEN 1941/42.

The THIRD REICH RUSSIAN FRONT MEDAL  also known by German Veteran's as the frozen meat medal, awarded for the Russian campaign 1941/42 to have been awarded this medal meant you survived hell on the Russian Front and everything Mother Russia could throw at you.  There were two types of this Decoration made the scarce TYPE1 as shown here, with the Silver highlights to the Edge and Helmet, and TYPE 2 a cheap version all in gun metal grey

The Deaths Head badge of the SS.

The THIRD REICH SA SPORTS BADGE  with it's striking design a Swastika over a Roman Sword. Awarded for winning Athletic events, each year the recipient had to re-qualify to retain his badge. Quite proudly worn on German Military Tunics.

The Dutch Nazi Party "NSB" instituted a special Bravery and Merit award for NSB members in German Service. This award commonly known as the Mussert Cross comes in two classes; with swords for combatants and without swords (very rare) for non-combatants. The front side shows gilt wolf hook over swastika with oak leaves. The back side shows around the top edge of the circle the motto of the NSB in gilt "Hou En Trou" and oak leaves on the bottom edge. The centre of the disc has the name "Mussert" and "1941."

The ribbon shows the Dutch National Colours. From left the right the ribbon colours are sky blue, white with thin orange strip to the centre, white and sky blue. The award was never authorized by Hitler to be worn on German uniforms.

Blutorden (the Blood Order) originally named Ehrenzeigen vom 9th November 1923, it was instituted in March 1934 and awarded to participants in the Munich "Putsch."

It was renamed Blutorden and given as a Nazi party decoration for outstanding merit until 1942, some posthumously awarded. It was worn with a red, white and black ribbon on the right breast pocket.

The words on its back translate as "Against all odds you have been victorious."

Sepp Dietrich was one of its earliest recipients. >>>
