This is a discharge certificate of a soldier who served in the 57/60th Battalion CMF as both a militia man and as an AIF soldier.

The change from one to the other made no difference except on paper.

It shows the break up of his service and the number of days served in Australia and overseas.

I knew this soldier well (he was my uncle) and I came to understand his feelings on the 'Chocko' dispute.

He hated the implied slur that came with the name, knew it to be unfair in most cases and and was justifiably proud of the work done by the CMF Units, including his own. Yet he still wanted to be AIF. He, like hundreds of thousands of other Australians, wanted to be as well regarded as their fathers who served in the first AIF were.
