Two
versions of the Martinsyde ''Elephant"
attack plane were made, the G100 and
the G102. The ''Elephant" was not very successful and is one of
the lesser known aircraft of the era. They were actually designed by
Sydney Camm and Anthony Fletcher, who were both working for Martinsyde
at the time. The G100 was intended to be a single seat scout but was
larger than some bombers so it was soon named the ''Elephant". It turned
out to be far too stable to be a fighter and was mainly used as a
bomber-reconnaissance machine. 272 ''Elephants" were built, many of the earlier G100s being modified to the
later G102 standard. There are no ''Elephants" of either type left in
existence

RE8. The RE stood for
Reconnaissance Experimental. The 8 was the version or model number. Over
4000 were built. These were the 'bombers' that dropped the ammo at
the Battle of Hamel. The twin seat RE8 was powered by
the 120 hp (110kW) Royal Aircraft Factory in-line engine.
|
|
The
advantage of an in-line engine over a rotary engine and a large wing
area provided a considerable amount of stability to the aircraft. It
had a maximum speed of 102 mph (165 kms), with a ceiling of 13450 ft
(4100m). |
It was armed with two or three machine guns and could carry
120 kg of bombs. However, not all at the same time. Typically it had
a forward firing Vickers mounted on the side of the cowling and a
rear Lewis gun. Armed with bombs, two machine guns, pilot and gunner
it could barely get off the ground. If photographic reconnaissance
was required then they carried a wireless transmitter, and the bombs
and possibly a machine gun had to be left behind. |
