Assassin's Creed II: First details

Ubisoft's massive sequel officially heads to 15th century Venice...
The first proper details on Assassin's Creed II have emerged, following the release of an official teaser trailer earlier this week.

The second game, which is said to be the brain child of an astonishing 240 development staff at Ubisoft Montreal, takes place in 15th century Venice where one of modern day man Desmond's ancient relatives is once again going around stabbing people.

New weapons, smarter AI, a refined mission structure (thank goodness) and even a crazy Leonardo Di Vinci flying machine are promised for the follow up, the new issues of US mag Game Informer reveals.

See the full list of changes, courtesy of NeoGAF, below:

- 1476, warring families, corrupted clergy, political intrigue, warring city-states.
- Assassination and executions are common in those days.
- Post plague era, modern science begins, etc., (basically, a resume of what the Renaissance era was like).
- Assassins and Templars continue their struggle.
- Venice and its waterways, Florence and its huge monuments.
- There is an illustration of San Gimignano's towers, and it speaks of the Tuscany country side. Another illustration shows some boats in Venice's canals.
- Saint Mark's Basilica. The Grand Canal, The Little Canal, Rialto Bridge, are shown (screenshots compared to real-life shots)
- Patrice Désilets says Altair was only in the middle of the "timeline", but now you live through the memories of a new ancestor to Desmond.
- Da Vinci is an ally to Ezio's family. He is like Q in James Bond. Machiavelli teaches you "tactics".
- "We know that he (Ezio) does end up alone and on a quest for vengeance". Learns to become an Assassin.
- Ezio can dive into the water in Venice, hide underwater as long as he can hold his breath, etc.
- You can pull guards in the water to assassinate them.
- Taller buildings. You can use a new leap maneuver to climb faster.
- More varied "hiding places"
- Ezio's infamy grows if makes too much commotion, making people more suspicious. If you become notorious, new missions appear (example: assassinate the witnesses, bribe people, get rid of wanted posters), so you can lower your notorious level if you want.
- Ezio can disarm enemies and use their weapons against them.
- Dozens of weapons with their own special moves (pike allows you to knock many enemies off their feet, dagger allows you to do an escape kill of some sort, etc.), can fight without weapons too and do things like throw dirt in an enemy's eyes because sometimes you don't have a weapon (except for the hidden blade and throwing knives), even heabutts! Désilets says that at the end you should become so good with the double hidde blades that you will use them over any weapons. A hammer is shown, a club too, and some blades and an axe.
- Game is made to address concerns people had with AC1, while staying true to its core. Biggest need was "more variety". AC2 no longer uses the AC1 gameplay loop structure (bureau, info, assassination).
- Ezio can use boats to move through the canals (in an example of mission variety, Ezio goes to see an informant but they are attacked and you must defend her as you make your way to a boat, then use it to get her to safety). Sometimes those different mission types are mixed together in one mission (example; mission starts as a simple delivery, but ends up as a chase, and finally a kill).
- A picture is shown of different enemy types. One is really big and fully armored. Each enemy type have their own attitudes and weaknesses. Enemies evolve as the game progresses (first encounter in the game will feel different than later ones). Agile dagger wielders can freerun like Ezio (following him more easily). The big dudes are more deadly in close combat. Spear wielders will look for you moreso, like in hiding places. You can kill enemies from the hiding places (picture shows Ezio grabbing a nearby soldier with his hand on his mouth, emerging from a bay hale chariot).
- Templars and Assassins are "underground, behind the events, pulling strings".
- Day and night cycle.
- Different kinds of objects to find but that actually give you something in return.

"Justa one Cornetto" mission.

Sounds very interesting. I personally loved Assassins Creed, yes it was repetitive but that didnt stop it from being a damned good game. If they expand on what they had in the first game and have an interesting story line ill be buying it.

Yes, I also loved the first game. Looking at the list of features and improvements I can see that AC 2 is going to be what I wanted the first game to be. Should be great. :D

i think that AC 2 should look at gta 4 in terms of mission structure. i know that its dumb to compare any game to gta but if it works, why not? especially when the mission structure in AC 1 sucked so badly. going around, talking to contacts, getting assassination targets from them. and instead of a cell phone you could have a pet eagle that sends messages to and from contacts.

If AC2 can implement all of these features, and keep it as well presented and tidy as the first game made it, then I'm sold already.

AC1 had it's flaws, whether you find it obvious or not, but I still found it enjoyable. So I'm looking forward to this already... Damn hype machine.

Quite, although in my case I borrowed my brothers 360 version and then later bought the PS3 version for a tenner. A bit more variance in the gameplay wouldn't go amiss either.

It sounds fantastic. After reading that, Assassins Creed 2 has just become my most anticapated game of the year.

first one was so overhyped, repetitive and boring, i sold it after third kill i think, i wasn't even bothered collecting all hundreds of flags, were they unlocking any extras?

I just think the new character looks FACKING ORSUM.

It's strange. The first AC was so riddled with shortcomings yet somehow it still managed to maintain a reputation as a good, if flawed game. The next logical step would be to take the part of the first game that made it bearable through all that repetative crap and apply it to a fresh, equally awesome concept. I like.

As long as they let me SKIP THE ****ING CUTSCENES, I'll be happy

this sounds bloody awesome. it has to be said that AC had potential but fell short. this is def one i'm watching.

Ubisoft shouldnt use GTA IV as an example at all, GTA IV had the most repetitive mission structure from any of the GTA games, it was a case of getting from a to b and then killing someone. The only difference between AC 1 and GTA IV is even though GTA was repetitive it had alot more going for it, AC didnt and thats what made it boring and pretty much a sub standard game, it should never of sold as well as it did but thats the beauty of advertising and hyping up games.

What Assassins Creed lacked I think was side missions. Killing random templars dotted round the map isnt really a side mission.

I'd laugh my socks off if in the new A.C you could kill someone called Mario who had a bit of a mushroom fetish. Wonder where I thought of that from.

actually I agree that gta iv had quite repetitive missions, and I dont mean that AC2 should take inspiration from the mission types- just the way that they are presented, as in acquiring contacts and asking them for missions.

the first game hand so much potential and was fun to play but, like everyone has said, did repeat itself over and over. you have to admit the sword fights against numerous gaurds and taking each one out with a quick counter was great and nudging a gaurd so he flapped his arms as he toppled over the side of a building, that never got boring. if they can build on all the great ideas, story and beauty from the first game then the sequal should be pretty special. im looking forward to it. just dont make so many damned flags to find.

By the way, does Jade Raymond have anything to do with this game? :D

It begins!

Can't wait for this. The story of AC1 was top notch, even if the gameplay got tedious.

I hope they dont put 'flying machines' in for realismism's sake, whilst Leonardo did do drawings of them he never made working models, if they do put them in, they may as well include laser guns and aliens.

Cant wait to see footage,it sounds like Ubisoft are making something very special indeed.

With Bioshock 2 and Modern Warfare 2,its going to a great fecking year. :D

I enjoyed the premise of AC more than the actual game, unfortunately. I am hopeful that the sequel will be less repetitive and a bit more focused. Technically it (AC1) was great and whilst I enjoyed the first couple of hours with the game, it just didn't hold my interest to see it through to the end.

I won't knock the sequel until I've played a demo. It could potentially be really good.

I must admit, I'm still yet to play the first - but, I think I view it in the same way: great idea, not quite as good as it could be.

The sequel, however, is a whole different kettle of fish. I suspect they've listened to the feedback for the last game and taken note of where the improvements can be made - there's certainly nothing wrong with the way the first game looked (it's still visually stunning), but there needs to be more variation in order to keep it fresh and keep you coming back for more.

I know a lot of people that really enjoyed it, so I have high hopes for the follow-up.

:)

This sounds incredible, definately very high in my list of must buys. I loved the first game and this sounds very intruiging.

Did you notice how similar the games that came out in winter 2007 are to the games that are going to come out in winter 2009? Check it out:

2007:

Assassins Creed
Halo 3
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Mass Effect

2009:
Assassins Creed 2
Halo 3: ODST
Bioshock 2
Modern Warfare 2
Mass Effect 2 (early 2010)

It's all sequels isn't it, well ODST is an expansion pack, but still. How about a new IP once in a while please, like Dead Space for example.

just make it so when u swipe ur sword at their necks, their head goes spinning off with enough blood. ac1 was too tame!

Maybe the problem is that I've always wanted Assassin's Creed to be more like Hitman and Thief, but I find this game silly. For instance the clothing of this guy hasn't changed a bit. It's as if he has dressed not to kill silently but to stand out in a crowd. There's even a webcomic made about it.

I just had a look at AC1 again recently, and once you accept the terrible mission structure, it really was an amazing achievement, and if you've still got it in your dirty secrets draw you should try it again...

I am very confident in AC2: with the all the goodness of the first, plus all the things promised for the second, it's a definite pre-order for me.
