PlayStation rules in Japan

PSP, PS3 platforms dominate hardware chart
Sony platforms took the top two places in the Japanese hardware chart during the week ended March 8.

PSP topped the rankings with 59,568 sales, while PS3 placed second after shifting 39,835 units.

DSi was third after moving 32,102 units, almost double the total achieved by fourth placed Wii, which was just 1,500 sales ahead of Xbox 360.

Yesterday we reported that Resident Evil 5 had stormed the Japanese software chart during the week in question, with the PS3 version topping the pile.

Here's the full hardware sales figures:

  • PSP: 59,568
  • PS3: 39,835
  • DSi: 32,102
  • Wii : 16,560
  • 360: 14,994
  • DS Lite: 11,240
  • PS2: 4,954

What game is shifting all those PSP's?
Posted by Mark240473
I must say that those numbers are pretty impressive. I wonder how long Sony can keep it up? The Japanese have just had WKC, Yakuza 3, SF4 and Resi 5 for their PS3's so the software lineup has been really strong this year.

Sony will need another big hitter to keep the momentum going, otherwise it will be business as usual in Japan in a couple of weeks.

Then again, they could just be feeling the HD bug at last.

About bloody time, I say.

There are loads of RPG's available for the PSP in Japan, so that answers your question really. Monster Hunter being one of them, though there are loads more that I can't spell/pronounce!

New colours.

FFXIII is the biggest game of this year in Japan. I'll look forward to how many units it'll shift.

Also FFXIII demo will be out in Japan next month.

WOW Bloody good week for sony in Japan. Surprised at how few wiis were sold though. Guess it really is hitting satuaration point over there.

whats with the sudden obssesion with the japanese hardware charts?
Posted by shellster2
good business for Sony I see.

Hopefully if they keep up the good numbers they'll be able to drop the price of the PS3 soon.

I fancy a bluray player and i can get a decent sony one for £169 now, so if the PS3 hit £199 i'd be in there like a ferret up your trouser leg :)

sudden? :? do we not get these nearly every week?
Posted by collyboy187
it has to be said that sonys dominance this week comes not from a huge sales jump, but from consistantly selling as many units as the last few weeks, where as dsi and wii had massive fall offs. suprised that the dsi had such a fall, dsi and lite usually topped the chart for as long as i can remember...

Mmmm. I reckon it'll be at least another year before the PS3 is sub £200. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. I reckon the PS3 will be £250 with a couple of games by xmas. That maybe a good time to buy one.

ok recent obsession then

Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce was a massive seller last week so it's probably still that.

cos the Jap market used to be the most important market in the world. Now it trails Europe and the US. But it has become such a volatile market that it's interesting to watch. Amazing news for Sony getting 1st and 2nd. About time their gamble paid off (higher price, higher performance). I'm glad to see PS3 gaining in popularity. Anyone else blown away by Killzone 2? Sure it's not the greatest story ever etc, but it's mind boggling playing it on my 40" with surround sound. Such a solid game and completely engrossing. Lovin it!

I think what's interesting is not the fact the Sony's consoles are selling well over in Japan at the moment, but how Nintendo Wii sales are continuing to fall. The Wii sold just over 1500 more than the XBox 360. Considering how Microsoft really struggles over there, it's got to worry Nintendo that they're doing only slightly better than them at the moment.

I agree with ya. Killzone 2 is amazing on 42" plasma and surround sound. Online is addictive as hell. Pity the japanese gamers aren't into FPS tho. How long will the PS3/PSP sales stay top I wonder.

Theres millions still waiting for a price drop though and I don't think their gona give in yet and pay the extra 50-100 pounds/euros/dollars or whatever you'r currency is just yet, its working in japan but thats inevitable.

No Wii games in the top ten in Japan = lower console sales.

PSP/PS3 games in top ten = higher console sales.

It really is as simple as that.

In a way it's a shame that Sony are going through this little purple patch, because any ground they make up in Japan is going to be obliterated when the new console versions of Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest come out, so it's all for naught...

Maybe you are right, but the new Final Fantasy games will be just as (if not more) popular for the PS3 in Japan than those games you just mentioned.

If you ask me, the PS3 and 360 have just started to get into their stride in Japan, whereas the Wii is looking more and more like the old technology it really is.

Good sales this week, I think the Wii could really do with a price cut(Nintendo seem to think the opposite, well for Europe anyway).

Sony still has a long way to go to topple Nintendo this gen, total PSP sales would have to double for one. I'd much prefer a more equal market though so we can get some good variety because each console had it's own thing(but the 360 and PS3 seem to be trying to steal each others, JRPGs and FPSs that is).

Yet it has still sold more than double of the new technlogy! Maybe the word fun has something to do with it?

To reiterate, Japanese console sales have always been software led. Monster Hunter 3 on Wii will show a complete reversal, though by now, everyone must surely have a Wii anyway?! Don't think Nintendo will be worried somehow.

If there was a god of console sales to pray to then I'd be there backing the PS3.
I've got both PS3 (60gb) and 360 and I would just love to see the PS3 get some steam up and start to claw back some sales from the 360, I've nothing against the 360 but if a game is available at a similar cost and the dev did'nt mess up the PS3 version then I get it every time before the 360. I can then use it's online features, I'm not a live subscriber.

As a ps3 owner, I feel quite happy that sales are boosting. Even though people talk crap, the PS3 has sold more in 2 years than the gamecube did since 2002. yes, we all agree that gamecube was crap, but this just shows ps3 is hardly a flop if it can move that much in 2 years. Its at the same point in sales worldwide as the 360 was in its 2nd year. I think this rise in sales is just proof that the ps3 is going to pull through at top the console charts.

I hope the PS3's success continues and spreads to other regions, all in all its a great machine with a lot of potential, Sony's gamble is beginning to pay off. :o

The japs are the only ones with hands small enough to hold that turd of a ps3 controller. Just bought ps3 for killzone, which is great, but that controller... if you're used to the 360 one, which fits the human hand... maybe there are some special gloves that I didn't see in the box, I'll go and look now.
Posted by bunneyo
Again this was inevitable! ps3 dominance is beginning lol
Posted by jonboy1969
"Turd of a ps3 controller",i suppose that Fisher-Price 360 controller is perfect eh? :)
Posted by cjw101
They do realise that you can take games out of consoles and put different ones in, yeah? I do sometimes wonder if the Japanese buy a new console to play each big release on... :?

Now as a Sony fanboy I of course must come up with some Victory Sony, die Mario type comment. However I can't think of anything original. Can anyone suggest something?
