I am not bothered about a hard drive but when on earth are they going to enable play from SD cards like they promised over a year ago! Even the DS has half the inbuilt storage capacity that the Wii does. That's mental.
They could at least release a new SKU with, say, 2gb instead of a measly 512mb. Flash memory is cheaper than Leith whores. What's "rumour and peculation" shouldn't it be rumour and speculation?
Still I think the Wii needs something like this and it's a no brainer, should have been out long before this. Or perhaps they will slip it into the Wii 2 and demand people upgrade? i'm happy with sd cards. I think the best thing would be to enable play from them and allow support for the higher than 2 gb. Its not tlike the machine isn't capable of it.
The homebrew channel runs all ots programmes off sd and it is possible to use some of the faster sd cards with it. The only problem is you can only have 2 gb of space free or it wont register it. Agreed with above- SD cards are by far the better option:
-Already available and in use by users -Carbon footprint of creating, packaging and shipping another peripheral over updating firmware is huge -Someone will find a way to get a HDD lodged in their new flatscreen TV, claim it made the Wii switch on Madworld and touch their kids.
Whichever route they go down, if it doesn't support Cube title's I'll kick off, been picking up games I missed off eBay all week! :) Will you be my witness? Takes up both USB slots? then it should come with some USB slots on it then. (If it's true, don't really care tbh, unless Ninty are planning large downloads). Considering everyone is desperate for one, I am surprised Nintendo has not bought one out by now just because they would make a lot of money, that company is weird! I believe that both Guitar Hero WT and Rock Band 2 on Wii allow songs that have been downloaded to the SD card (up to around 80 tracks on 2gb) to be used in-game, with the song information being directly read during play.
This was made possible by the Nov 08 system update which dramatically increased SD transfer speeds. Endless Ocean and Excite truck also allowed for MP3 files to play during the game so surely there is not much work needed to bridge that final gap?
I would rather see an SD card improvement over a completely separate hard drive attachment, I really don't feel there is a call for a 32gb HDD on Wii. 2gb instant read/write access would be more than adequate or a firmware to allow SDHC of 16gb would be ideal. Funny, funny man.
Nintendo: "We're not releasing a HDD because we want to reduce our carbon footprint."
