GTA movie with Eminem "almost happened"

Rockstar approved film was a "done deal" last year, says Variety
A blockbuster movie spin-off of the Grand Theft Auto series very nearly happened last spring, with one of Hollywood's six major studio's lined up to develop the Rockstar film.

According to Variety's Cut Scene blog, last year the GTA flick was basically a "done deal," with rap star Eminem possibly lined up to star, though that sounds more like speculation on Variety's report.

"Then at the last minute," the blog reads, "it all fell apart. I'm told Take 2 couldn't finalize terms with the studio, though I'm not sure if it was a purely financial issue or if, in the end, the publisher got cold feet about giving away rights to its baby."

Given the highly cinematic nature of the games, GTA would've made a cracking movie under the right people. More than likely though it would've been handed out to some cheapo action director (Paul W Anderson?) So we're probably better off.

It's unclear whether Rockstar will ever be willing to sign a movie deal again, though we reckon that decision will be directly determined by GTA IV's cash pile.

I'm SO glad this didn't happen. It would have been horrible!

My advice = Don't ever think about it again Rockstar. You will be putting a tear in the fabric of the GTA space time continuim, and screwing up a brilliant gaming franchise with a throwaway tie-in movie.
It would turn out to be mince anyway (they always do!).

wait. this would have been any different from any movie starring 50 Cent or DMX how?

Most of the movies out there already are GTA done as a movie.

What we need is Silent Hill 2 movie, because the Silent Hill movie was pretty damn good.

oh.. and

So what exactly would it have taken from the games? Each one has a different set of characters and there is no running story line. The only continuous thing through the series is some of them are set in the same fictional city and they feature gangstas. So it would have been any old gangsta film with the GTA name* and set in Liberty City. Sounds like a simple cash in to me, therefore would have been shit.

* There is actually already a film called Grand Theft Auto, although no association.

the best out of the gta-wanabe lot is deffo crank. its not GTA or fully like it, but theres some slight similarities, and theres going to be a sequel! woo hoooo! chev chelios isnt dead! ok, its madness, but i will still see it in the pics.

but if they did do a gta, they are best using the gta4 style story and use an eatern european, i would laugh at a rapper being in one (san andreas) or making it like vice city and just being a rip off of scarface. i think if rockstar make enough money off gta4 (they obviously will do) they should fund the project and get a top director and scriptwriter in.

Yea, I've seen most of that actually (mid day sky movies about 6 years ago) and it actually has a really good car chase.

I think he does something like hides in a car wash, changes his clothes and then carries on driving away at one point, which reminds me of, certainly the first gta.

I hope they don't make a GTA movie. If they can't even get AVP or Batman right then they shouldn't try their hands at nothing else

WHAT Batman Begins was a decent film and did justice to the series. The new one, Dark Knight looks bloody wicked.

What! They didn't make the film that would've surely defined the movie industry for the next century: Grand Theft Auto:The Real Slim Shady. I mean what's not to like? It would have had Eminem set in GTA but real with fake gangsters etc. Oh wait- I get your point.
