Codies won't "make cheap, crappy" Wii ports

Company explains its cautious approach to Nintendo's console
Codemasters has explained what it terms its "cautious" approach to developing and publishing Wii games, saying the market is cluttered with samey mass-market titles.

"You can't ignore Wii, but it's bewildering watching what other publishers are doing. Codemasters has taken a more cautious strategy on Wii which has been the right thing to do," said Alex Bertie, the company's marketing VP.

"We are not going to make cheap, crappy ports. DIRT on Wii, for instance, is not Mario Kart. Overlord 2 is a gamer's game. We're not planning to compete in this 'big head sports arena' that everyone is obsessed with - the shelves are cluttered with those games. What you'll see from us is quality games for gamers built for the Wii," he added in an interview with MCV.

"There's only a number of times I think you can go to a retailer with a DS or Wii game which is that type of mass-market product," said Codemasters UK general manager Jeremy Wigmore. "Those games just become white noise."

I'd like to shake the guy that said this by the hand.

What? as opposed to the cheap, crappy original games you make?

(sorry that's so unlike me but I couldn't resist...)

****ing ay. This guys saying what us wii owners have all been thinking. Surely even the so called casual crowd have had enough of the dross that lots of big publishers have been putting on it.

Can't wait for overlord on the wii and the it's going to be class. After hearing that i've got even higher hopes for it.

Fair Play Mr. Codemaster. Better not mention Turning Point then eh? Although I know that wasn't actually developed by them.

Somebody give that man a See-gar!

I've seen the light. Finally a Wii Dev talking sense.

That's because they spent all their money porting crappy Korean RPGs for the western PC market :)

The Codies need to get back to what made them awesome in the first place. Games like Dizzy and the 'Pro x Sim' games. Get the Darlings back on board!

These guys have come such a long way since the old 8 bit days. I still have a load of spectrum games knocking around somewhere...

Now... a 3D Adventure game in the vein of Mario 64 with Dizzy? Hmm... that would be interesting.

Following games i think Codies should make for the wii;

Sensible Soccer
Cannon Fodder
Dizzy

Any of these would make me happy as a pig in shit. especially cannon fodder.

Edit: They are thinking of making a new DIzzy. there's a petition to see if any ones interested here http://www.yolkfolk.com/site/petition.php

Well said Code Masters, I hope Nintendo are listening too, can say its a good time to weed out all the crap developers due to the downturn and I hope companies like THQ, Data Design Interactive and Midway bite the dust real soon for the sake of gaming as a whole!

so that's high voltage, sega and codemasters on board with the idea of making quality wii titles for 'gamers'.

shame the likes of valve, infinity ward, epic, namco, konami, capcom, square,ea etc... don't feel the same and will continue to (A):port shit to the wii for a quick cash in or (B): ignore the format entirely while talking some shit about 'no pixel shaders so bump mapping would be impossible,it can't run the cod4 engine at all,we go forwards not backwards etc...'

the wii is never gonna get the support it's market position deserves.

i think all wii owners should just accept that now after more than 2 years of lies and evasions out of the mouths of every major dev house on earth.

oh and thanks codies,if only for the effort you've put in to overlord on the wii. you're a rarity.

Hope they follow through on this nice little speech. Overlord 2 looks great, though, I like the art style. Seems developers are beginning to realise they need to create Wii-specific visuals rather than trying to imitate those on the more powerful machines. (I'm nothing if not an optimist).

I wrote a letter to the Codies several years ago (probably the beginning of the PS2 era) saying that a new Dizzy game would be great (I also thought Dizzy in a 3D environment could be fantastic).

They responded saying that due to licensing issues there will not be any more Dizzy games. I was gutted. I don't know if the Darlings maybe owned that franchise and took it with them when they left the company.

That's put a shitter on my day. Dizzy is awesome. I was just hoping for an update of the old games, don't see why it would cost much.

It does make me wonder what they (the Darlings) are doing with it if they own it because it appears there is a big demand for these games. This, together with a Laser Squad update, would make me a happy man.

So does this mean expensive crappy ports instead?

I think developers are still really confused by the Wii. I don't see how difficult it would be to make a good game on it really. Due to the nature and costs of developing for the more powerful consoles the wii won't really get a look in. If it had similar graphical capabilities to the Xbox and Ps3 then I'd bet my face that they would've put the effort into making extraordinary games. The control system is perfect but the machine is horrendously underpowered. It's a different market and developers like Valve etc... are more aligned with the way Sony and Microsoft do things.

It's fair to complain about these companies not putting the effort in but Nintendo in my eyes has failed to appeal to the core gamer this generation and every Zlist celeb advert I see just rams the point home. They're after market share like everyone else which is fair enough but they're forgetting who bought the Nintendo systems and games in the first place.

Family Ski and Snowboard (a big-head sports game) is one of the most entertaining and downright fun titles I've played in years. I just want good games, regardless of big heads.

I don't know, as far as I can tell neither of the Darlings are still in the video game industry. David has pretty much retired and is working on his interest in robotics and Richard just seems to have disappeared. I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be interested in making some easy money from the license.

If I could find an address for either, I'd drop them an email myself :)

While Nintendo's marketing is rather sucky, these huge businesses should have followed their wallets by now as HD development isn't doing them any favours. They are just too stubborn to try.

They know that the Wii can do shader operations (like fur shading in Mario Galaxy) because the Gamecube did them, and the Wii has proven it can do the same things that the other consoles can do but in a lower resolution (see COD5, The Conduit). It is all worthless rhetoric.

---

It's nice to see Codies saying what we want to hear, Overlord doesn't look better than something like Starfox Adventures in my opinion but is still very promising.
