XBL, PSN full of "rampant homophobia"

Gay rights group raps anti-gay sentiment in online gaming communities
Gay rights group, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have responded to yesterday's hoopla over an Xbox Live user being banned for stating she was a lesbian.

Speaking via the organisation's blog, GLAAD said it's working to address the "rampant homophobia" in online gaming communities such as Xbox Live and PSN, by meeting with the platform holders.

"Since the beginning of this year, GLAAD has been in active conversations with Microsoft, specifically with Stephen Tolouse, about Xbox Live and how their policies affect LGBT [Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transvestite] people," the organisation said.

"After talking with both Sony and Microsoft, GLAAD began to notice a common thread in both of the gaming giant's policies - they were both put in place to fight and/or prevent defamation. It sounds counter-intuitive to some, and to even us at first, but upon further review and discussion, the issue at hand became clearer.

"The online world provides unprecedented anonymity for people," it added. "They can, and do, say what they want. Unfortunately, in online gaming that has often translated to homophobic, racist, and misogynistic attacks.

"Sony, Microsoft, and many others have been trying to address this by putting policies in place to prevent subscribers from using the online shield of anonymity to harass, verbally assault, and generally defame others. Are they the best policies? No."

The gay rights group had particular concern over PS3's Home, and worked with Sony to address certain issues, it said. "When Sony launched the beta for Playstation Home, we fielded concerns from GLAAD supporters that the system was not LGBT friendly.

"It was being reported to us that when people used the chat feature and would type in certain words like "gay" or "lesbian", they would come up as asterisks like '***' or '*******.' Typing and sending 'I am gay' would actually send 'I am ***.' Also, people found they were banned from using a similar set of words to name "clubs" in the virtual world," it said.

GLAAD says its working to address the "rampant homophobia" in online gaming communities and it's even planning to host a panel this summer in Silicon Valley.

"We're truly in a new era. And with new technologies, come new challenges. LGBT people have fought hard for years to come out of real-world closets - we're not willing to accept virtual ones," it said.

"As GLAAD makes progress, we will be engaging the community in a vibrant discussion and work together to find the best solutions to make online gaming safe and enjoying for us all."

Bring back old fashioned keyboard communication.

I never had that kind of abuse in the late 1990s/early 2000s.
Posted by Dajmin
I think these guys are missing the point. The word "gay" gets tossed around as an insult, but it's not used in a derogatory sense to actual gay people.
I have a very gay RL friend who uses the term when something goes wrong too.

If you think about it too much, almost anything can be taken as an insult, and in the heat of the moment with adrenaline pumping, a lot of people don't think that what they're saying might offend someone.

I've never used "gay" in that way, but I use "son of a bitch" sometimes. Does that mean anyone with a grumpy mother is suddenly going to be forming a picket line outside my house?
Posted by wrightandrewjame
I must say I'm afraid of PlayStation Home too. What that's not what homophobia means? :P

Are we going to be having handbag reviews on here soon, cvg?

Seriously though, it just reflects the outside world. What can you do, other than stop people communicating with each other online?

If they only allowed clans to talk privately amongst themselves, then that would eliminate the problem entirely. Until then, you will always get stupid/ignorant morons online.
Posted by Black Mantis
This will be a fruitless task as there is no deterrent to this behavior. The only way is to educate people to be more tolerant and treat others with respect. I won't hold my breath.
Posted by fanboy
If you dont like it, dont wear a headset.

Simple as that.
Posted by Nick_Don
So they want everyone online to stop using the word gay, and be nice to everyone who likes to take it up teh bum. And not laugh at them. Good luck with that. Let me know how you get on. I have nothing against people being gay, I think they are born with it. The thought of two men going at it disgusts me but that's not their problem I guess. We all eventually have to pay for our actions in this world so as I say, **** everyone and let God sort them out,

life is to short to be trying to please everyone.

50+ post here we come...i'll just sit here with all of natures animals that arn't odd and can mate and keep life one earth running

yet i bet its ok for them to say things to people, also seems its ok for them to be offended by things but no one else, gotta love double standards

no place online is friendly not just for them but for other races etc, its allways gonna be around, thier not the only people who face discrimination, some of what i read thier was "dont offend us but anyone else you can"
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
I've said it before and i'll say it again. Cut off the Biblebelts INternet supply and the web will be a much friendlier more tolerant place.

Most of the racist/homophobic crap i hear while i'm playing online tends to come from yanks!

Ban America from live. sign up today.

Nintendo have sort of eliminated this by not letting anyone who doesn't already know you communicate with you. However the whole friend code thing sucks so i hope they drop the bloody thing and just let us all ******** and bicker in piece. Nintendo wifi is definately a very sheltered community compared to LIv eand PSN where most of the people on thier appear to actually live in sheltered communities :P
Posted by leefear1
I switch the voice communication off on Live unless I am speaking to a friend (in which case I use private chat) The Racism, Homophobia and other disgraceful insults are not what I really want to hear while playing games. To be fair though banning the US from the internet would help as the vast majority of the offensive language is from US gamers. On the odd occasion that I do have the voice communication on I immediately report any offensive language and hopefully these idiots will get banned eventually.

Whilst people remain different from each other, this stuff is never, ever going to go away. Even if you find a group of people with the same colour skin and sexual orientation... they are still going to break it down to whether they are fat or skinny, bald or ginger, old or young. It's just the way people are. Where the problem needs to be identified is when this sort of thing becomes hateful and malicious, not just basic name calling which, I'm sure, we've all grown up with in school and continued to endure through our working lives/down the pub etc.

A lot of people don't understand why the term "gay" is used as an insult so often, but it's really quite simple.

When you call somebody gay as an insult, you're not actually assuming that they are really gay, because how would that be an insult? You're actually assuming that they're heterosexual & that calling a heterosexual man gay is in fact the actual insult. It's common knowledge that most hetro men find the idea of two men having sex fairly repulsive & that is why it is an insult to straight men. So next time somebody calls you "gay", just think "oh, he's actually saying he believes me to be straight". If you are gay however, just remember why it's an insult amongst straight people & try not to be too offended. I've had this conversation with a gay friend of mine many times & the truth of the matter is that most people just don't put too much thought into things before they speak. Gay people should also put more effort into not being offended so easily by the term, as it's something boys/men start saying from a very early age. People aren't really aware of what they're saying.

As a result of these conversations with said friend, he is now more comfortable when he hears me/people calling things/people gay that are obviously not, because he makes an effort not to be so sensitive & he knows they don't mean anything by it most of the time.

And if that fails, just think.. "Moron!! Going around insulting people & using homophobic slurs instead of just getting on with playing the game. He's a ****, at least I'm not."

Just live & let live, let people get on with it. If someone's being offensive & rude, it makes no difference the actual words they use. Just mute them/block them.

I hate to say it, but all of the "faux gansta wannabe, I'll pop a cap in yo ass, you stupid limey" types I have come across on Live ARE American.

Its not just homophobia, its rife with all sorts of abuse, racism etc etc.

It just goes with the territory of letting hoardes of pre-pubesent Americans on a gaming service unfortunately.

I have learnt which games are worth going online with (Forza 2, Skate) and which are full of the idiots (GTA IV, GOW etc etc), so I try to avoid the type of player that spouts off inane crap.

Either cut America off (or have a UK only live service) or restrict the age, I wish I could only play with players upwards of 25 at times!!!!

*Homer looks at the globe* "haha look at this country, U-are-gay" (Uruguay)
Posted by leefear1
I agree, as there is a big difference to an offensive word used either ignorantly or culturally to using an offensive word with the sole aim of offending. However from what I have heard on Live the the offensive language used by US gamers certainly comes across as aiming to offend, even to the point of bullying. The rest of the worlds gamers seem to generally use offensive words in a much more joke/ignorant way.
Posted by YCshinobi
While it may mostly come from the yanks, it's not just them, I've heard plenty homophobic and racist abuse from people in the UK (mostly northeners), so you can't just say ban America from Live/PSN.

MS should update the feedback system where people who have been abused online by these people can leave feedback on someones profile if they have been using homophobic/racist/sexiest language, and there is significant amount of negatve feedback in that era, then MS should investigate and ban those people, not the vicims.
Posted by twistedfiend
I have to say that the most vile abuse I have witnessed on XBL has come from our American friends. Kids, brought up to be intolerant, throw homophobic and racist slurs around like it's normal. So what if someone's gay and says so on their profile, they should be banning the morons who get a headshot on you then proceed to tell you what a ****ing fag you are and how they owned your ass.
Posted by dweebosh
As long as the gay rights lobby aren't suggesting that XboxLive and PSN are somehow contributing to this homophobia then this is OK by me.

Homophobia in online gaming is just an accurate representation of the character/bigotry of school age US kids - nothing more sinister than that. The problem is cultural, not with the gaming service. You're naive if you think the problem can be tackled without completely santising online gaming (which would be very bad indeed).

I'm an adult, as such I'm not offended by idiot children throwing around 'big words' when I teabag their lifeless corpses. I encourage others to subscribe to this attitude, regardless of whether you are fat/gay/black/mexican/British/different in any way whatsoever.

Live and PSN are literally digital playgrounds - if you expect anything more then you'll be disappointed, no different to if you visited the tarmac at your local school

You do know that animals can be homosexual too? I take it you didn't read my link in yesterday's thread?
Posted by kimoak
I dunno, calling a gay person gay is like calling me a man. 'Hey Kimoak you f**king homosapien!!!' Errr yeah... thanks... Homophobia is everywhere though!

I don't want to see the Americans banned from XBL.. mainly cos if i get one and live, I won't be able to play my brother online as he is Amercan himself :)

couldnt find it :? but so what, it's not natural and to be honest i was just trying to kick things off

What exactly is it that gay people want on Xbox live?, I don't go to the shop and tell the checkout girl I like having sex with hot chicks. And I don't do it on Xbox live either. Yet gay people want to shout that they are gay from the roof tops at any given moment. News flash, no ne cares that you are gay, you are not special because you like having sex with people of the same sex. There are far more worthy causes to fight for in this world, all the gay people I've ever met are self centered and attention whores who love ramming their views down other people's throats yet don't want to listen to other people.

Last time I checked they were treated equal , they need to shut the **** up already.
Posted by leefear1
Perhaps a ringfenced area in the US could be created where the small number of Tolerant Americans could live (possibly Delaware...) and then be allowed online. Then your brother could move there and you would be able to play him.
Posted by Padua
If there is not hate and bullying behind it then what is the problem - it is just a word? The Nanny State is bad enough... now they want Nanny Cyberspace too... :? Give me a break!

I wonder if people would get offended if I typed/said "That was sooooo not-straight!" instead?

The feedback system is never going to solve anything in it's current state. People can give bad feedback just because they feel like it or if you beat them.

I was once given "quit early" bad feedback by some people after patiently explaining that something had happened in the real world that needed my urgent attention and apologised profusely. I wouldn't of minded so much if we were losing but we weren't!
Posted by roger4000
HANG ON A MINUTE!!!!!!!! what are we all doing. are we not here to talk about games. what are we all doing posting stuff about the gay community. lets just leave em to it. anybody getting killzone today?

Why dont we just ask for a gay persons perspective? So how do feel about it Mark240473 ?
Posted by richardnewns
A possible solution would be do divide up XBL and PSN so that a gamer could choose only to play with people from a certain country, or region, or age range.

Or that all the people in the world would decide to live together in peace and harmony.

Either way is good.

Posted by AJB123644
Wow this does not surprise me. Almost as bad as Christians stating that they are Christian, who cares.

You all want to be equal yet the majority have to constantly remind us of how they are different, how they are special all because they like a little but of the same sex.

Christ just wish these people would step back and get on with their lifes. If they dont like Home then dont go on it simple as.

Maybe they should set up a gay server so all these people can go on there. Would that make them happier?
Posted by peteuplink
I've always wondered why XBL isn't set up so you can choose which network you'd prefer to play on. Instead of the UK being lumped together online with the USA and all the players of all different ages being thrown together, why can't we have communities that we can choose to be in? (communites like teens, over 20's, college, languages/country- french, german, italian, english, etc, older gamers, etc)

That way you're more likely to get a game with people of a similar age/outlook as yourself rather than getting put in a game with some prepubescent gangsta wannabe, overprivaledged brat trash talking at everyone.
Posted by Dajmin
The bottom line is this:

Unless they are actually verbally abusing an actual gay person, it's not homophobia, is it?

And is it an insult to call someone "gay" now, even if they are?

Gay animals

Tbh, it's just as natural as hetrosexuality. Claiming it's "not natural" make you seem bigoted and insensitive (Not saying you are, just how it looks) so just be careful what you say. If we're picking up on unnatural events, then most of modern human life can fall into that. It's not natural for man to fly, it's not natural for man to conquer diseases and heal serious illness, it's not natural for man to have sex for pleasure and not to procreate but it happens everyday.

As to those who say that gay people need to shut up, I think they have missed the point of the story.

Take yesterday's story. Yes she had mentioned on her profile that she was a lesbian but left (based on her words) the games when abuse was hurled at her. She was then chased from lobby to lobby and game to game. That is in my eyes, is much, much worse than mentioning your sexual preferance in your profile and it's that behaviour I want to see tackled on XBL and PSN rather than banning someone for mentioning their sexual preference.
Posted by Rakhdeep
The word 'gay' used to mean 'happy' until it was hijacked by homosexuals.

Now the word 'gay' means 'lame'.

It's the way language evolves. Nothing wrong with that.

Ironically, the Home censoring policy looks to have been put in place to prevent homosexual insults.

I am gay but I don't shove any views I have down other people's throats. I am not an attention seeking whore. In fact, I am probably one of the most down to earth people you would meet.

Don't judge all gays by the stereotypes you say on TV or parading round London in fairy wings.

They are ***** and most normal gays cant be doing with them.

For those who think 2 gays "at it" is disgusting. Don't spend too much time thinking about it.

Bravo Philfitt for your honest and forthright views.

Indeed I should also add that I have worked with and know several gay and lesbian people, and the one thing that is notable is that they don't mention their sexuality in day to day life.

I'm surprised that someone who uses homosexuality in animals as proof that it's natural wouldn't be aware that there are also animals that have sex for pleasure.

Bonobo chimps, Orangutans and Dolphins have all been known to pleasure each other sexually without procreating.

As a gay man who considers one of his main hobbies to be gaming 0 i feel in a minority.

As mentioned earlier not ALL gay men are skinny, efemminate and outspoken - some of us just et up goto work, play games, pay taxes and lead normal lives.

I didnt wake up at the age of 13 with a choice of sexuality and go...hmm shall I lead a life of marriage and fatherhood, feeling like i fit into society without a second thought, or shall I choose being gay and having to feel an outsider on the mainstream, face bullying at school and constant jipes and comments from the world at large (hers looking at ypu Mr Pope)...hmm Ill choose gay please!

No id didnt - i dealt with being gay and just wanna get on with my life, play games and integrate thanks - NOT ALL GAYS ARE MINCING QUEENS!

I can accept under 16's being homophobic there are children after all...but most of the games I hear offensive terms from are 15 - 18 rated and the larger issue is that Microsoft whould be monitoring childrens access to such content - a bit like CVG should mintor these threads better

There are loads of stupid kids on the interweb throwing round homophobic words. But the problem isn't really that they are homophobes, they use disgusting language all the time if you are straight or homosexual, they are always talking gangster stuff and swearing. If you let them know you are a homosexual then they will target you, it's the rules of the playground, and a big online area where you play games is a playground. But they'd turn on you if you let them know you were fat, had glasses, only had one arm, if you're 'briiitish', muslim, female, over 60, or anything that's different to them.

Play.com has it for £29.99. The bonus being that they offer free delivery and usually get it to you sharpish.

You also get a limited edition theme, though whether that is just for preorders, I'm not too sure.

... I seriously can't believe the amount of utter crap I have just wasted a portion of my life reading in the comments above. A few good points, but most of you have just managed to prove the campaigners point whilst completely missing it in your own response...

"How can calling someone/something gay possibly be offensive?" Because it is subconciously reinforcing an image of 'gay' as being wrong or rubbish or just an isult in general. Also, from personal experience, most insults I receive online are not being called gay anyway, the most common I find is being called a 'fag' by Americans which truly is an offensive, and utterly homophobic, word!

"Gays just need to learn to be less sensitive!" Ok, try going up to a black person, shout the N word in their face and then tell them to be less senstive... Bloody morons...

Now just to set out my stall by the way, I'm a rational, vaguely inteligent adult who happens to use the most offensive language (including the word 'gay'... Yes, I'm a hypocrite) and evoke the most disgusting imagery when around friends who know my sense of humour so I cannot claim to be innocent here. The point here is that I know my audience, if I was to utter half of this to strangers they would be truly offended! So I don't!
Posted by fanboy
No, just the solution that I use.

I dont like it, so I dont use the headset. If other people dont like it, they shouldnt use the headset either. Its OPTIONAL.

Funny how someone so placid and PC like yourself, could be so judgemental of someone by reading two sentences.
Posted by fanboy
I absolutley respect your views, but its the same for pretty much everyone to be honest.

I've got a scouse accent. On Live I've been called a robber, a murderer, I've been told that 'I' murdered Rhys Jones, I've been told that it was 'my' fault that the Hillsborough and Heysel disasters happened, and many other things besides.

I have a mate who is of Pakistani origin, and he has been called all kinds of things just from the strength of his accent! Paki, Suicide Bomber and all the things you associate with Live.

I decided to stop using the headset cos it just gets on your nerves after a while. Im all for banter but when you've got some kid screaming murdering scouse scum at you, you just get a bit fed up of it it all.

Now, I understand that there is a fair bit of homophobic abuse going on aswell, but none more than any other prejudice. And the thing that really ticks me off is this all kicked off cos that lesbian decided to broadcast her sexuality on her profile! I mean, if you know how Live works then you are just insiting people by doing that!
Posted by fanboy
You cant have a go at people for being prejudice if you are going to use the word 'Yank', and blame 'northerners' for using offensive language.

Thats just as prejudice as what you yourself are complaining about.
Posted by Deadgood UK
I dont know of any American's who find the term 'Yank' insulting. It's just like us Brits being called 'Limeys' and 'Poms', I've never met anyone who's been bothered by that.

Surely, Northerner isnt an offensive term now is it?
Posted by fanboy
Thats wierd because almost everyone American person Ive ever met despises that term.

To insinuate that only the northerners in England are racist and homophobic is insulting, yes.
Posted by Crow555
Fair enough, momentary slip of concentration there. I was aware of it, just didn't think.

It was meant to illustrate that Roger4000's view of what is deemed as natural is somewhat skewed.
Posted by Crow555
Yes, it's optional but you have paid for a service and you shouldn't be bullied off it. Ideally anyone giving you grief can be swiftly dealt with.

Having said that before the NXE and the party function, I'd spend the first 20 seconds of each match muting all those with whiney voices, the thrash talkers and those with the rubbishy dance music coming down the mic. Now I can just talk to my friends and not have to put up with it.

I don't subscribe to the belief that we have to accept that it's there and put up with it. If we applied that thinking to everyday life, bananas would still be thrown at black players at football matches. Homophobia and racism paints a very low light of gaming and I for one am not going to put up with it.
Posted by fanboy
»

Its currently the only solution though.

Unless voice chat becomes friends only it'll stay the only solution aswell.

Its not like going to a football match as there are barely any consequences for being prejudice online, people may be banned for a short while but normally they get around it somehow. People are entirely different when no one can see them, so coming up with a solution is gonna take alot of thought.

I just cant see how it could be changed.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Wow. I think i understand now that both sides are as retarded as each other.

I think what needs to be taken out of the world wholesale is people being labled and shoved into little groups and boxes.

I'm sick of groups of various forms going on about being offended by this that or the other. I understand that its taken us as a society a long time to become more or less an unbiased society as a whole. Now quit it, your no longer singled out so welcome to being shit on ripped on and chewed out as much as the rest of us. You are no longer special. Juat another guy, deal with it. I'm not pandering to someone else just because they're different. At the end of the day we are all stuck in the same boat. You forgo special treatment when you got equal rights.

I couldn't give a flying **** what colour, creed or race or sexual orientation you are. So long as you're not a **** you're ok by me.

I hope we one day live in a world where all these pointless ****ing arguments are put aside and we can all rip into each other in whatever way we like and its just seen as Japes and tomfoolery. Either we can all have free reign to call each whatever the hell we like or nothing at all.

Thats the way i see it. But then again i'm a white christain male. I'm common garden everyman and no *******s got my back.

The joke about kicking america off of live was just that. a joke. thanks for the support though.

I could understand why some american could take offence to being called yanks though. especially in the southern states.
Posted by fanboy
Thats the thing that really annoys me too, the inconsistancy of it.

As you say, we should all be able to slag each other off or not at all.

You cant call people gay, use the 'n' word (which is a bit far to be honest), or take the piss out of anyones country. Unless they are American or British of course.

'Scumbag murdering scouser'

'Money grabbing Jock'

'Welsh sheep shagger'

'Stupid Yank'

Its fine to say all of these things and everyone just laughs it off, but if you use the 'n' word or the 'p' word instead of Welsh, Yank, scouser or Jock in those same sentences its racist. I dont get that. If you substitute Welsh, Yank, scouser or Jock for 'puff' then it becomes ten time worse than what it was!

My point is that pretty much everyone has to go through the same thing, but current fashionable thinking is to be PC, but only to certain parts of society.
Posted by morgadp
What equal rights are those then? The fact that just because I am gay I am not allowed to donate blood under the pretense that I am a "risk" group (despite that STI's are increasing far more sharply in Heterosexuals)? The fact that my insurance premiums are loaded? That I cannot hold my partner's hand in public without being jeered at and insulted? The officially-sanctioned homophobia of the Vatican? The 86 countries that still consider homosexuality to be a crime, with many punishing it with the death penalty? The fact that employers still regularly discriminate against gay people (I was sacked once after being assaulted outside a nightclub. When my manager found out it was a Gay club, I was told my "lifestyle is not appropriate for the company". All attempts at legal action came to nothing, and this was one of the biggest financial organisations in the world).
Gay people are a long way away from being treated equally. We are treated better than we have in the past, but by no means are we treated equally. I will assume that, as you are not someone that has to put up with this discrimination in every sector of life on a daily basis, it is not as visible to you and so I'm not going to start flinging insults around like the idiots on Live.
For the record, I am not a "militant" gay, or a fairy, or someone that even feels the need to mention my sexuality in day-to-day life. But events like this (and the subsequent flood of "i'm not homophobic BUT (insert homophobic comment here)") seriously p*ss me off.

Excellent post mate.

Plus its worth mentioning how civil partnerships are still not fully recognised in the mortgage industry aswell.

I just want you to know that its just the use of language I am talking about here. I dont want anyone to interpret anything I say any further than that.

I think the Gay Lesbian Alliance or whatever they're called need to get over themselves.

We get it. You're gay. Some of your women have cocks. Nobody cares. **** off.

I have a message to all the non white people and the homosexual people.
You are no longer getting lynched, call it a win and stop aggravating everyone who doesnt say the politically correct thing in every situation. You dont need to keep holding protests and getting in the way of important issues, you are all allowed to do whatever you please, vote, work, live, just get on with your life ok. Plenty of normal white hetrosexual people are insulted constantly from everything about them, from weight to height and people do so because they are worried about themselves and making other people seem worse makes them seem better. They are idiots but like all of you they cannot and shall not be dealt with. They can do what they want and say what they want. A freedom of speech is a major part of most 1st world countrys and they are permitted to say whatever they please just as other people can speak various languages, preach various religions and just act in their own different way.

Accept that you all have it the best you have ever had it, your not being lynched and you dont need to worry about needing children for retirment because of various equal rights acts and liberal reforms. Short of Declaring martial law and implanting chips that shock you when you are racist or homophobic there is NOTHING anyone can do. Please just be happy with what you have.

People are still using Home?

Has the novelty not worn off yet?

Not being lynched? People are murdered every day based purely on their sexuality. I suppose the fact that homophobic violence and murder is on the INCREASE and that the murder of gay people is increasingly common in the UK (reported regularly in the Gay media but not, perhaps unsurprisingly, in the mainstream) doesn't count? And yes, we have the "best we have ever had it", but that is very different from equality. When slavery was abolished, Black people had it "the best they had ever had it", but noone can ever say that they were treated equally until several hundred years later. I work, I pay taxes, I contribute just as much to society as anyone else. So why am I treated differently simply because I have am attracted to the same sex? Not too long ago a friend of mine needed a blood transfusion. Despite having the same blood type and being free of any infections, I was turned down as a donor due to my sexuality. If that is not discrimination, then I don't know what is. Discrimination like this among many other issues is unacceptable and it is only BY protesting that anything will ever be done about it.

how gay is this news like....

tis a good point morgadp. I kinda got in trouble for taking a gay rights story completely the wrong way a while ago so ill keep it brief. Homophobic/racial/sexist abuse is childish, stupid and more importantly highly ****ing insulting. Its illegal to do it walking down the street, so why is it acceptable to do it while on public game servers? Its financially more sensible for sony and microsoft to deal with this problem in a sensible and sensitive manner now than putting off hundreds of thousands of possible customers because a minority of idiotic simpletons.

BTW is it to much to call ding333 and idiot?

I've got freckles and you know what, you are allowed to call me pepperoni pizza face, spotty or whatever you want, because feckled people have no rights. So anything that's racist to black people or asian people, well it's ok to pick on the colour of skin of freckled people. And you know that you can get done by law for discriminatng against homosexuals, well it's ok if you discriminate against freckled people! Half my life I was bullied at at school, but no, let's make special rules for everyone else.

But I don't care, I'm not f*cking bitter.

I am gay and play video games. I also worked for CVG magazine back in the 90s, when it was published by another company. In the editorial office there was a fair bit of homophobic banter about 'poofs' and 'queers', but I regarded my colleagues as friends and never took offense.

But our office was a mix of races and backgrounds too, and I never recall racial abuse being used as 'banter'. And for some of the comments being made here by people who say it just has to be accepted, I wonder if they would be quite so brave if they were talking about racism and racial superiority which was once just 'accepted'.

If you believe that everyone is equal, then you should believe people should be equally protected from abuse and isolation. I've come across so many people in my life who were scarred from their youth because of their 'mistake' in being a 'mincing poof'. I wouldn't classify myself as being a 'mincing poof',but you know what, what's so wrong if I was? It's no better or worse than being some teenage dickhead who plays WoW 24/7 and thinks he knows how the world works.

The issue with HOME,which I have used is not that the large number of morons who use it homophobically abuse each other because they lack the wit or wisdom to create proper humour. Indeed, that will not change.

It's that Sony has programmed the thing to purge of references to being gay or setting up gay groups or clubs. Now, why would we want to setup a gay club? Well, why not? It's not a recruiting station and, astonishingly, we have better things to do than accost straight people and inform them of our sexual preferences.

It's because we want to meet people that we may socialise with, already know, or maybe date. Share experience with across the world. I thought that was what HOME was meant to be about.

The fact the word gay is banned seems to suggest that 'gay' is attached to shame, or that it's not suitable for children. Sony is totally behind the times. I know plenty of gay parents, some who were gay before they had kids, others who came out afterwards.

I bought my PS3. I've paid Sony a chunk of money which they ploughed into HOME and I want to be treated equally when I use it.

So suck on that.

I've never realy noticed a problem on PSN's Home in fact I've meet a few gay friends on there.

I don't think I'll get the same welcome i tend to avoid playing on Live

I agree with this stuff. The stuff I ever heard playing Resistance: FOM was shocking. I didn't take it personally because no one knows anything about me, but the attitudes on display weren't exactly charming.

There are so many men out there who want to do their girlfriends/wifes (or just girls generally) up the arse and they think it's ok. But as soon as it's another man on the receiving end all of a sudden it's 'wrong'. Yet arses are all the same. I find that incredibly hypocritical.

I was moved to tears at the thought of freckled people up and down the land having to endure taunts such as pizza face. What's more alarming is that there are currently no support groups available to offer advice in dealing with this.

Cry me a river you freckled ****

This topic has pretty much proved that there's an excessive amount of homophobia within the games playing population. Whether or not it's real homophobia or just insecure people putting on some sort of supposedly "macho" front in a pastime dominated by young men, I don't know, but 95% of the above is pretty depressing rubbish. For anyone wanting to skip the pointless bits morgadp & gusswan have made the best points I've ever seen on this site, so please read them before you suffer the rest of the posts (I'd skip everything else as it's time consuming and a bit of a crude, slow, mental torture, although the gay animals bit was good...).

Billy Connolly did a joke about how a lot of people think that homosexuals are necessarily more effeminate than heterosexuals and yet what sounds more butch? To say 'I want a big man' or 'I'd like a pretty lady please'.

When you think about it, 'heterosexuality' may be really softer, particularly since being homosexual brings possible scorn and attacks from some people.

If our choices saying something about our personalities then doesn't the male desire for a woman arguably show a femininity in men? Some say that opposites attract but, curiously, they don't say the same regarding all personal choices in life.

I THINk SO
