id: Quake Live "is Packed"

Free-to-play Quake up for web browser sampling. But join the queue...
id Software has launched the Quake Live open beta, which can be played and shouted at by angry rocket marksmen right now. Except apparently it's "packed," and we're currently 16548th in a queue to download it.

The free-to-play shooter, which is basically a fleshed out version of Quake III, features 40 arenas, five game modes and very slightly tweaked graphics (we can tell).

The game is Carmack's latest brain test, encaged entirely within a web browser (so you can get a cheeky game in while the boss isn't looking, cough) and funded by in-game advertising.

We like it a lot. According to John Carmack (via Joystiq) the Xbox Live Arcade version is also "very close" to being completed, which is a surprise.

Sign up and go mental (or queue at least) on the Quake Live site.

6449th here :(

Yeah I'm queued around 6000 or so....

Seems like a lot of the free to play games are using browser plugins... Battlefield Heroes seems to be doing the same thing.
Posted by wildhook2
I'm still waiting for stupid email to verify my account!
Posted by spam23
Woo 6,017th

@SpasmicPuppy: Of course they need browser plug-ins, they're hardly going to work as HTML code are they?
Posted by svd_grasshopper
is this a simplistic flash game or something?!
Posted by wildhook2
It's utterly crap!

You need confirmation email first before getting in to play!

I'm still waiting for it!
Posted by spam23
Yo wildhook, chill! This is a beta, as such the process is bound to be less than streamlined.

I was gutted at waiting in line to download the plugin, then having to wait in line again to get to play it too but I'm happy to be one of the first people to try this out.

@svd_grasshopper: Better than flash. Much better than flash.

someone with a big brain wanna tell me how they managed to get Quake 3 looking brilliant over a web browser. Play's as good as a remember in '99 ie. awesome
Posted by snips10
Dare I ask our IT department whether I can join this and play at lunch!?!?!?!?!
Posted by wildhook2
Our PCs are more powerful than in 1999?

Anyway...Still waiting for confirmation email :(

Hey snips ask you never know!

Just had a few goes. its really manic to start with so hopefully it all clicks after having a few practice goes.

Looks good and plays rapid.

it doesn't work on mac :( booooooooooo
Posted by minignaz
Might try and have a blast of this when I get home tonight, doubt I'll have enough time, but I'll try.
Posted by fatfoogoo
@snips10 - if you can tear them away from playing it themselves.

But in all honesty, if your workplace is firewalled (99% chance it is), getting an admin to open port 5222 is gonna be a mighty big uphill battle.

Best o' luck.

Been playing this BETA for a few weeks now and i LOVE it!

Seriously some skilled people on there though!

and run the plugin page through https://www.facebookfirewall.com it will get around any firewall you have at work ;)

I was part of the closed Beta for Quake live - wasn't allowed to talk about it as I was under NDA.

Once you've sorted your account out & done the training match then its SUPERB! hard to believe its a browser game - it really is excellent!

You're right about the skillage already on the servers - just got my ass thoroughly handed to me on TDM.

Love it :D

Last time i played q3 was wasting lots of money on phone bill playing 4 player q3 on dreamcast using 56k connection. What fun. Lovin

The files that are downloaded in the background are the same Pak files as the originals, etc. Remember the game came on one CD back in the day so the download is not a killer.

It is Quake3 Arena which is initialised through your browser, but with the extra funky way you can actually play the game in it too. you can switch to fullscreen to make it look as it was back in the day.. only shinier :)

I'll see you guys on the servers. The names 'Tichinde' by the way :)

Now they WAS the days! Although i was on NTL so i paid like £15 a month for unlimited access to the dial up number haha!

And the 4 split screen was mega! Good times!

Thought I'd give this a go, was 22,000 and something in the queue... got to end... and then.... nothing happened, other than it telling me that I needed to download something, and that I needed to hit a download button that was either invisible or simply did not exist.

What a waste of time.

Check your junk before you complain... mine was in my junk mail folder :D

SO far it's been a bit of a heap of crap. keeps crashing out at load up. Not impressed.

Update. Looks great if you can get in. Sadly if the open beta is this riddled with game killing holes. I dread to think what the closed beta was like.

My brother had that, updated his Graphics card drivers and all was good.

Once the beta is over, I'm sure they'll get the queues and other glitches sorted. It is fast and furious once in game. I love it!
