Square Enix next on Steam

Japanese publisher jumps aboard download service starting with The Last Remnant
Square Enix has confirmed its bringing its games to Valve's Steam service, starting with The Last Remnant on April 9.

The Last Remnant will be the first Square Enix game to utilise Steamworks and be distributed via the service, the Final Fantasy house confirmed. Pricing hasn't been detailed.

"Square Enix is committed to delivering the best quality titles to PC gamers and distribution on Steam is one of the many steps we are taking to increase accessibility for fans in North America and PAL territories," said Square Enix boss John Yamamoto.

"We are excited to offer the millions of Steam customers online access to titles beginning with our major action RPG, The Last Remnant."

Final Fantasy back catalogue next, please...

Think you'd have to ask eidos about tha..... oh wait.

That would be good being able to get final fantasy VII and VIII again would be great after my copies mysteriously disappeared.

Any chance of getting Steam to PS3/Xbox360 then? :)
Posted by pishers
wouldn't it be funny if it appeared on ps3 but not 360? cant see Microsoft or Sony for that matter giving up control over their download services - maybe valve should create their own console in conjunction with apple!

Hah! I knew it! They have been wanting to make more stuff for PC and now that they have bought Eidos they can finally start doing it. Good thing is that they picked Steam, it's becoming one of the main PC gaiming pillars.

If Apple brought out a console it would be even more overpriced than the PS3 was, yet with their marketing "everyone" would want one.

@topic: Yay Last Remnant.

It's not often a company destroying the competition is good news, but every time I see another big publisher added to Steam I can't help but smile :)

Suprising though, I was starting to think SE were slightly allergic to PCs...

Awesome, I wonder how well this will go down with the haters?

I would like the older FFs and nice joke about Eidos there.

It decisions like this that reassures me that Square Enix aren't as daft as the fanboys would have you think.

Good on SE. I'm pleased to read that even more games will be readily available to various gamers. That said, I personally haven't downloaded, and don't want to download, a single game from Steam (unless you count CS:Source which I initially got from my HL gaming disc and Zombie Mod). Give me a hardcopy any day of the week, thanks. Steam is in many ways simply a more nicely dressed version of DRM but DRM nonetheless. I really only have three gripes with the current Steam setup:

1) People can't sell or otherwise transfer their legally purchased online downloads of games because they are registered to the account. Unless you create a new account for each new game you download and then sell or pass along the password to that particular account you can't exercise your right to sell your property which violates the law. If I ever begin to download games from Steam I will make a new account each time because I refuse to let a company tell me that I can't sell a legally purchased product.

2) Some single player games, even when purchased in hardcopy form, have to be activated online via Steamworks. This is DRM and there really is no tangible benefit to the end customer for strictly single player games (updates aren't mandatory and thus it should be the choice of the user).

3) Speaking of updates, Steam insists on updating various games upon launch without asking for permission.

I like steam, i have a load of bought steam content, and its handy to have on both of my rigs, you can even play the sames games simultaneously( maybe it doesnt work with all but AudioSurf works ), my problem with steam now is: STOP RIPPING OFF EU CUSTOMERS ON CURRENCY CONVERSION

Now the $ is 1:1 with the euro on steam meaning games are costing 50% more which now makes it useless for new games as what was $49.99 before/38euro or whatever is no 49.99euro whereas at retail the games are 39.99euro or whatever

This is the main reason I don't buy anything of steam, pity it's such a rip-off.

Isn't FF XIII coming to pc? If so this is bound to be what this deal is for.
