Awesome. As a film format it shits all over DVD and I love it.
I really don't understand why some people are so dead against it. I've stopped buying DVD movies because they look awful compared to blu ray. The Dark Knight looks bloody awesome!
Of course blu ray is going to stay - HD DVD fanboys aren't still not accepting that HD DVD is 2000s version of betamax! Because it is Sony.
Pathetic HD DVD fanboys! Watch The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray. It made my eyes bleed. was that comment really worth it? why not wait until somebody posts a pro hd-dvd comment? seems like you are the fanboy.
i wonder when they are going to tell us the wii is here to stay and isnt just a short lived gimmick? seriously, do these people get paid to state the obvious, if so where do i apply? Does this include game and movie sales? What a load of cr*p. How about people are more than happy enough with DVDs. Or, perhaps people feel like they've only just upgraded their collection to DVD and don't want to have to do that again. Or how about the cost of Blu Rays is greater than DVDs. Or maybe a great many people don't have a Blu Ray player...
There's a multitude of reasons, and not one of them is 'because it's Sony'. My PS3 went belly up a while back and whilst the 2 week wait for a new one wasn't too bad, it was having to download everything again (PSN titles and updates) that was a ball-ache. I'm sorry, but if I had to download all my BD films as well, then I would have lost the will to live. For that reason alone, Bluray is here to stay. Bladerunner is brilliant on BR as well. »
sorry marty but you forgot to say the most obvious reason that you and people like you are all a bunch of tight tramps that cannot afford to buy blu-ray disc's I too was cynical, until I rented dark knight on BR. I've had HD telly for some time through virgin and now sky, but never had any movie channels, so never really saw the benefit. The difference is amazing. I've not bought a BRD yet, as I subscribe to a rental service that offers BRD, but i rarely buy dvd's either. »»
Would you like a bit of cream for that, Marty? crimbo/daily/thrush, you will be please to know that you have been reported. Thank you, saves me the bother.
Thrush is definitely a more appropriate name though... I'm a download man myself, but this is good news for those who are building up their Blu-Ray collections. No worries, and yep I agree. It is getting a bit pathetic now isn't it? Most people would have given up by this stage. Slightly off topic, but did anybody watch Heroes last night? I thought it was a superb start to the 2nd part of the season and couldn't resist watching the 2nd episode on BBC3! Best thing on telly, well, until Top Gear comes back! bye crimbo (again). See you in a couple of hours I guess... There has been so much guff written about HD in general and BluRay specifically. 'We don't need an HD disc format - we'll get it all over the network'. Sure, your ISP wants you downloading 20GB every time you want to watch a movie. 'People are happy watching DVD'. Yeah, and some people probably are still using Philips video 2000 and swear by it - with sub-£100 players and eventual price parity on discs, why would you continue to buy SD movies? The premium charged for BD is reducing, it's a normal practice in years 1-3 to recoup the R&D costs. Didn't watch it as they put it on the same time as 24 :(
Even though the current series of 24 hasn't grabbed me totally, I can't break my schedule now! And Heroes, Top Gear both pale in comparison to the last series of The Shield. Yeah, I'm starting a TV war! Don't know about Heros now. I think it's starting to suffer from the same issue that hurt Lost. Never! Top Gear is king!
Though to be fair, I have never seen the Shield. I'll have to keep an eye open for that one. I forgot to mention that for people like me who live with "broadband" speeds of well under 1Meg, downloads are out of the question. It would take 4 days to download a single HD movie on my current speed. Reducing it may be, but they are still more expensive. Plus, many people don't have a BD player. They may be 'sub £100', but that still involves you shelling out for yet another playback device when a great many people really don't see the point (for what is essentially better sound quality and a crisper picture). I'm with Marty-
I don't see the point in upgrading for a simple quality difference when there's little evidence showing it'll make a real difference on my megre 32" screen.
Besides, there's be another format along in 2/3 years that will be considerably better than Blu-ray.
There was a reason to switch from VHS to DVD- being able to jump around the disc, special features etc. I don't care enough about tiny resolution increases to rebuild my DVD collection in Blu-ray... Tiny resolution increases? The difference between 480p and 1080p is staggering. Even 720p is a vast improvement over standard def.
I know and appreciate that for many people, it simply isn't a concern and DVDs are perfectly fine for now. But all I can tell you is that when I watch The Dark Knight, Blade Runner, Zodiac and whatever else in 1080p with crisp DTS-HD 6.1 sound, I'm quite happy to have upgraded.
And who is forcing anyone to upgrade their DVD collection? You make the switch, you buy on the new format. Doesn't mean your old DVDs disappear overnight. Do you prefer to play games at 480p too? Why would you need to rebuild your DVD collection? You can play your exisiting DVD collection on a bluray player which upscales the DVD. You just start buying bluray discs!?! I have to agree with Marty too, a lot of my mates don't care a toss about an HD picture. Most of them still have 32" CRT's which do them quite fine. The only people that I know, that actually have an HD telly, are gamers.
The only people that I know personally who preach about HD movies are the guys who download MKV's and HD-WMV's. Outside of Playstation owners, I don't know anyone who owns a BluRay player.
I can however say that HD movies are a sight to see. I down....got my hands on Star Wars Ep3 and that opening scene is amazing in 1080p!
Anyway, all this 480p nonsense, don't we typically get 720x576 here in UK? Good old PAL eh! ^ I'm so glad to have been enlightened as to the opinions and viewing habits of people you know. Whilst I'd love to buy all my films on BluRay, there's no point, as I'd need to still buy them on standard DVD in order to watch them anywhere other than on my PC (the only BluRay device in my house). We have far too many normal DVD players (inc. PCs, portable DVD players etc) to make BluRay a convenient format to migrate to. My day has now been made knowing that you will leave this site enlightened. So, BR is doing well for Sony, Live is doing well for MS. Now we can all die at peace knowing our beloved console manufacturers are happy! christ the xbox fanboys are crawling out of the walls today in they, and they accuse ps3 owners of bein sepratists lol.....c**ts I think Bluray has gained enough momentum to be an option for people if not the dominant format for the next five years or so, and that's good enough for me. People vote with their wallets.
It's already more popular than LaserDisc ever was, and even that format lasted more than 5 years. Every new title comes out on both DVD and Bluray now, so everyone has a choice. I seriously don't understand why people on both sides of the argument are constantly ****ing moaning.
People who are happy with DVD are not luddites, or xbots (what an absurd notion), and people who have embraced the new format (like mois) are experiencing vastly higher quality visuals and audio, despite what the "HD is no different" detractors try to make out.
You pays yer money, you takes yer choice.
Yes, but that's 720x576 interlaced - not progressive. You'll find that when standard def stuff is displayed on an HDTV, it's de-interlaced then scaled to 480p (or "enhanced definition", as it's called in some circles), then upscaled to the panel resolution. 576p is a used resolution but it's nowhere near as common as 480p, which has become a catch-all term for "standard def", however erroneous.
Either way, it's 720p minimum or nothing in my house... :p No bascially. SD is 576i, that gives you 625 lines per frame but one 576 lines of actual picture. There's a clear difference between 576i and 720p. If you're looking for a good HD TV buy a 32" model with a 60Hz field rate (100hz is even better). It's not really worth paying extra for a 32" 1080p TV. »well thats like me saying the veyron looks like a bunch of crap just coz i cant buy it. For those that think its not a big improvement maybe you should watch a movie first then judge and if you still prefer DVD's then I wish I was tht easily impressed, would save me some cash.
1 thing that gets under my skin (and some of you prob seen this) is that FREAKIN FIGHT CLUB isnt out on blu-ray yet over here. WTF!!!!!!!!!!
+ Marty, 24 owns everything on tv so ya  As a PS3 zealot I have to say 'Go Mr B Ray!!!'. Saying that though I work for Maplins so I can afford 1 blu ray every 3 months... (Dr zoidberg disappointment sound).
Heroes is back and what a cracker of an episode last night! It is along with Top gear the only reason to watch TV. 24 just as good, but I will wait for DVD as I have a continent sized problem with giving any money to evil emperor Murdoch.
(yes I know he will still get some from me through the DVD, but I will wait for season 7 to be reduced, so hopefully he will get less) I'm sure you don't download movies or anything like that  But....you seen the quality of some of the XvidHD movies going about the Net right now? Some of them are pretty good it must be said! (I ask because they are all 720p)
Invested in a 46" Sharp Aquos (2nd Generation I think) not long after I got the 360, very good TV when I bought it, one of the best at the time, but it has not aged well, some of LCD's out atm wipe the floor with it. I need an upgrade :( I'm sure you don't download movies or anything like that  But....you seen the quality of some of the XvidHD movies going about the Net right now? Some of them are pretty good it must be said! (I ask because they are all 720p)
I downloaded shedloads of 720p Xvids last week. Wall-E and Ironman looked great. Took me 3 and a half hours for both to download. Thank god this format is here to stay. I could never go back to blurry DVD-vision. Weird thing is watching a film in cinema that's not hi-def - it's like watching a film with stemaed glasses on. And at blockbusters £3.95 for renting a DVD or bluray?... you figure... yeah but Bladerunner is brilliant full stop. must admit though the Blu-Ray version blew me away. especially the opening scene with the reflection of fire in Rachels eye The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray just as to be seen to be believed. i'd watched the dvd version the week before and it was explosive sound wise but then the Blu-Ray version made that seem like a poor quality copy. i believe that the Blu-Ray version incorporates IMAX tech in certain scenes where the borders disappear though. Hmmm is bunneyo another crimbo alias do you think? star wars HD? where? are u just talking about upscaling the dvd cause i ain't seen anything about star wars Blu-Ray apart from the shitty Clone Wars cartoon. Lucas must die nah, he wouldn't be able to get to 15 kudos before he got booted again. we'll find out if bunneyo gets banned in the next 24 hrs though. i'll add to this that you need a tv with low input lag for gaming too as some are pretty bad so be sure to do some research before getting one.
i got a 1080p 32 inch lcd  but it is rated as the best one to get and it was cheap :D It was off the Net, a WMV-HD rip from HD-DVD I believe, it really was a sight to behold and the shocking thing is, with it being a rip, there's obviously a slight sacrifice in quality. no offence or anything but as far as i can see there has never been any release of the 6 films in high def. HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. possibly something thats been upscaled and fired into wmv format. what size was the file whats wrong? i have every right to say what i want, don't like it, you can f**k off you cheeky c**ts!try and ban me all you like, typical of your fragile, weak persona's, but thanks for your curiosity yet it means nothing to me, if you cant take it dun dish it! Now then bubble and squeek, you may enlighten me!
ooh and who the f**k is crimbo?? »crimbo had a mouth like yours, and i don't mean in a Deliverance way, calling people ***** and just being a general ****. anyway i said i didn't think you were crimbo as you can't accrue 15 kudos in the time it takes him to set up a new account then get banned cause he doesn't realize that its his IP address that they use to detect him. so quite frankly, you can **** off. »»
well i was only speaking the truth bout xbox fanboys trying to bash the blue ray so yes their c**ts ans t**ts! and it was the truth. yes i have a foul mouth side to me, yet i can and will express it when and were i f**kin well like pal, and if you dont like it, fine, but dont go trying to assume that I is some dickhead called crimbo because he probably offended you in the past, grow up and smell the bacon and realise the real world. if you cant take offence and blacklash when tryin to defend something then dont post! its as simple as that perhaps you should heed your own words. my original statement was within the context of the thread, now im being called some1 else well thats something completely different all together! im guessin you didnt like crimbo coz he prefers the ps3 and offended you and because I made a statement to xbox fanboys also you dont like that either yet you spend all your time making statements about ps3 fanboys with xbox stats that dont really mean squat! yet were my original statement was to basiclly shutup xbox boys who seem to think the blue ray is crap because it isnt in their console
Grow up! I'm not a fan of modern films or TV, so there's next to nothing available on the format that appeals to me. :|
Maybe when the players come down to under £50, and they start releasing older material, and I can pick up a really large 1080p telly, I'll give it another look. :? »go back a few pages and actually read the posts. i have a PS3 and many Blu-Ray discs (been taking advantage of a lot of 3 for 2 offers). and as already said, i'll put it in capitals incase you've bad eyesight, I DON'T THINK YOU ARE CRIMBO. try to read the posts, take in what you've read and think about it before just rattling on with insults. either that or you really are crimbo as that was his style. and if you are we won't be seeing you tomorrow. jesus  I don't know of any released 1080p versions, but I have 720p rips of all 6 films taken I believe from Sky HD.
And they look beautiful, so I can't wait to own them in their 1080p glory on BD.
I've just bought Blade Runner, 2001 and 2010. You can already get a selection of Charlton Heston films, Humphrey Bogarts, etc. The back catalogues are steadily being released on the new format. It just takes time. At this point in DVD's life, the catalogue was comparable. Atrocious grammar, poor punctuation, makes up own words, swears like an old sailor and can’t even spell “Blu-ray”, yep, it’s definitely the ghost of Crimbo past………… Ah, sorry dude, just went a googled it there, seems the only place that it was in HD was on Sky, so it must have been ripped from there, but, I can't remember it having any Sky Movie logo's all over it. It had to be ripped from an HD source though, you would notice artifacts on a 46" TV, regardless of how well it was encoded, there just aint enough pixels on a DVD!
Will see if I can find out when I get home where they came from, some of the sites required for this info are most certainly NSFW! going through your previous posts you actually called him a waste of valuable oxygen when he was posting under his "daily" guise in the RROD:the worst is behind us thread. oh well fair enough but i dont remember every single guy/girl i speak to or rip online but owell what can you do »»»
Dude, if you carry on calling everyone a **** and a ****, you'll just get banned and then what would be the point of that?
You can swear as much and where you like, but there are normally repercussions! Tell my friend who got cautioned for breach of the peace (or something crazy like that) for over enthusiastic swearing, that there are no repercussions! I know that 100% but im just fed of coming on here to get some news about the ps3 and to find you got all these annoying idiots flaming up the boards sounding like complete and utter ***** who try to rib the blu-ray system cause its not in their xbox, how pathetic is that man? be completely different if it was in the xbox! its amazing cause the a select few on this site who claim their not ps3/xbox fanboys yet their ones who start all the debating an just does my sweed in carryin on and on and on. |
