Valve releases office PC specs

Blows minds; 12 gigs of RAM, quad core processors
Half-Life dev Valve, bizarrely, has released the specifications of its office PCs for anyone curious enough to have a read.

It's scary stuff for anyone considering upgrading in the next few months (who needs 12 gigs of RAM?!) but interesting none-the-less to see what the developer of today's top PC games is crunching its numbers with.

"We often get asked about the configuration of the machines we build around the office to do both game and Steam development. We also tend to turn over machines in the office pretty rapidly, at roughly every 18 months," Valve said, before listing these bad boys...

"Our current base configuration looks about like this:

  • EVGA 780i SLI FTW Intel Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 1066MHz ram (Crucial Ballistix, Kingston ValueRam)
  • 1 x NVidia GTX280 1GB - OR - ATI 4870 1GB graphics card
  • 1 x 250GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
  • 1 x 500GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
  • Antec Sonata III desktop case
  • Zalman CPU Cooler
  • 850W Antec power supply
  • 1 x Dell 3008FPW-HC 30" LCD - OR - 2 x Dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD monitors Windows XP 32bit"

"We're currently transitioning to this setup:

  • EVGA X58 3X SLI Intel Motherboard
  • Intel Corei7 940 2.93GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • 12GB PC3-10600 DDR3 1333MHz ram (Crucial Ballistix, Kingston ValueRam)
  • 1 x NVidia GTX285 1GB - OR - ATI 4870 1GB graphics card
  • 1 x 250GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
  • 1 x 500GB 7200RPM SATA HD (Seagate, Western Digital)
  • Lian Li P60-F Case
  • Intel CPU Cooler
  • 850W Antec power supply
  • 1 x Dell 3008FPW-HC 30" LCD - OR - 2 x Dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD monitors
  • Windows Vista 64bit"

For the record, CVG is packing dual cores with 2GB of RAM...

Sounds good but in few months it'll be outdated.

Well, specs like that make the PS3 and Xbox360 look like calculators

Meh, suprised they're not using dual quad cores and SCSI hard drives. Building and testing hugely benefits from 15k SCSI's.

And what is the point of 4GB and a 1GB graphics card on a 32bit system (the old one), it could only address ~3.5Gb of the 5GB they gave it!!
Posted by Zonf
Obligatory old joke... but can it run Crysis?
Posted by altitude2k
So do you think you can find a combination of RAM chips that adds up to 3.25 Gb or do you think it might be easier to just go with 4 Gb and let the OS only address the max 3.25...

can i have your old computers valve?
Posted by MadFruit
I think I'd put 3GB in there and allow the system address 3.25 of the COMBINED 4GB in there... yes the video RAM counts to the limit. Have your  with interest.

Presumably they actually develop on those machines, not just test the games on them, in which case large ram & processor power will be extremely useful for building levels quickly etc.

Well mine is using 3.25 Gb of the 4 Gb installed, and NX is telling me that there's 1 Gb graphics RAM available independently. Granted I'm using it for CAD, not gaming, but it should still be the same.

In fact, with a little bit of research, the two types of RAM are addressed completely differently and can never be mixed and matched. Nor does the graphics RAM affect the system memory limit imposed by the 32bit architecture.

Jesus, one more "32-bit Windows can only address..." etc comment and I'm going to scream.

Yes, you're absolutely right, it can. But you know what? 4GB kits are so cheap right now who in their right mind would bother buying a 2GB and 1GB kit and probably spend more in the process?

Dunno why everyones complaining about the ram, yes 32bit OS can only address 4Gig in total, for available Ram thats 4Gig - addressing space of gfx card + all other bits of hardware which will require various amounts of address space. However running 4 gig in dual channel will be a lot faster than 3 gig non dual channel. Its basically the setup i use for XP( but have a dual boot Vista ultimate 64bit also that i rarely use ), especially considering DDR2 is cheap as chips

Jesus Christ. Even the "standard" configuration is a good gaming rig. The one they are transcending to is a veritable B-E-A-S-T! I wonder what they do with the PCs they discontinue? Store them somewhere? Give them away to staff members and their friends/families? Sell them as second hand merchandise at a discount?

Wouldnt mind using this in my office. I have to make do with a dual core and 1gb of ram. =[

Their old set up is slighty faster than my current rig (same graphics card and amount of RAM, better CPU), though I have larger hard drives and two 30" Dell monitors.

But the new system blows mine out the water... :(

lol an old joke - but still makes me chuckle!

makes me wonder when the next level of Crysis will come out!

The graphics card RAM is accessed by the GPU chip on the graphics card and only needs to be addressed by the GPU. The main memory is accessed by the CPU on the motherboard and only needs to be addressed by the CPU. Therefore there are two separate address spaces for graphics and main memory which are not mixed and have their own limits dependant on the number of bits which can be used by each to assign memory locations.

And I use 4GB of RAM with 32bit XP to get the benefit of dual channel memory mode which I would not get with a 3GB combination. I'm sure Valve thought the same.

Thats not correct, every byte of ram on the gpu takes away directly from addressable system ram. The CPU does access gpu ram directly, whether to load textures or whatever.
Posted by Dragonahcas
They also probably stayed with XP 32 because XP 64bit is a pile of poo.

I actually thought devs were using dual processors and gpus. Old machines seems pretty standard and besides the RAM overkill on the new ones I'd say they are high end but not killer.
Now i wonder what crytek must have used.

Same here. Hah!

All this spec talk just goes over my head.

And is this really news?

I have mostly the same system have same cpu 920 but oc to 3.6, 3 gig of ddr 3 1600, Asus P6T Deluxe mother board using my old swift tech to cool it with a new water block 1000 watt power and a GTX295 running xp 32/vista64 and on my sony 40w4500/22 inch dell monitor

All these comments about 32 bit and 64 bit systems are a bit too much, but good for context. I have a 32 bit system, and run 3GB of DDR 2 600 mhz ram. I want to upgrade to 64 bit as my motherboard supports upto 16GB of Ram. DDR3 is just so expensive at the moment it's just silly.

Their new PC's are powerful, but not the most crazy specs ever.
