CoD: Modern Warfare 2 this year

Activision says it'll be "the most anticipated title of all of 2009"
Activision's confirmed that it will release Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 this year.

We didn't expect anything else considering the wild success the franchise has enjoyed over the last few years, but it's nice to hear some official chatter about the game.

"As we look at the back half of the year, we expect to release the majority of our games... We will also release Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 from Infinity Ward," said Mike Griffith, president and CEO of Activision Publishing, during a fourth quarter earnings call (transcript via Seeking Alpha).

"The Call of Duty franchise is in its seventh year and it has never been stronger," he added.

"Our recent performance was driven by Call of Duty World at War, which was a huge success for us this year, ranking as the number two selling franchise in the holiday quarter and the strength of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare catalogue sales, which was the number one first-person action game of all time with life to date of more than 12 million units.

"2009 going to be a very exciting year for the franchise as we expect this year's launch is likely going to be the most anticipated title of all of 2009." Big talk, but to be fair he could be right.

The news follows yesterday's revelation that the series' most recent offering, CoD: World at War, will be getting its first downloadable map pack during the first quarter.

O Yes can't wait :D

Why don't activison just do away with numbers and call it Call of Duty 09/10 season.

It might as well be a damn football game. I know technically it still has a two year development cycle but does anybody else think that its going to start getting old real quick.

as long as they come up with a few new ideas/weapons each time its going to sell! On another note I dont know if any cvg staff read these posts but those poxy adverts are ridiculous.

Since I'm only ever going to buy the Infinity Ward ones, no, it's not going to get tired for me. Can't wait for this.

This year is looking more and more promising.

There is an actual danger of the series growing stale as time passes and more games come of it - but that's the way it always goes.
I 'm just enjoying the games and if they grow boring I simply ignore them - as do others too.
Then they slowly die out and something else steps in to fill the void.

For the time being though: can hardly wait for CoD Modern Warfare 2!!!

" this year's launch is likely going to be the most anticipated title of all of 2009"

Erm...Halo Wars, Halo ODST, Kill Zone 2 and Dead Rising 2 all sound a million times better than YET ANOTHER CoD game.
CoD4 got old real quick, CoD5 was utter crap. I don't hold much hope that CoD6 will be any different. Why don't they concentrate on making good games instead of churning out a sequel every year for you idiots out there to buy.
What surprises me is that games like Halo or Guitar Hero get knocked for "milking the series" when games like CoD can release a game every year and people are okay with it.

YES!!! This is splendid news and I'm excited! This is easily one of my top three anticipated titles for 2009! I would be willing to buy a Treyarch COD game but at the moment I'm tired of their pedantic pandering to the WWII theater. Thank goodness Infinity Ward cooked up something new and different with the Modern Warfare setting.

Been waiting for this one since I heard CoD5 was going back to WW2. Love the original, can't wait to see what they do with it.

CoD4's multiplayer was top notch, and if they can get destructible environments in there then I'll be all over it. Not even that bothered about vehicles, since Battlefield has that covered. Close quarters combat is always more intense anyway.

Not if you're a PC player like me. 8) Besides, KZ2's final verdict is still out.

My thoughts exactly.

CoD4 is my fave game so far this gen & seeing as though W@W was a step back for the series I cant wait to get into some more MW action.

Easily my most anticipated game this year

As opposed to ANOTHER Halo game,FPS,Zombie game etc

You might not like COD,millions disagree.

Switch to firefox instead of internet explorer and then install adblock plus - it's awesome. I also used to get wound up by the agressive adverts on this site until recently an admin recommended adblock to me. Ads are no longer a problem, hooray!

Call of what, now?

I thought KZ2 was getting a PC port. or was that God of War 3. I'm sure one em was.

Persojnally i'm looking forward to the new wolfenstein over this. Never liked modern war fps's. It was a good call from a series point of view though how many more battles could there be in WW2 for the series to use.

CALL OF DUTY VIETNAM FFS!!!!!!!!!!!

Give that to me and I'll be happy, whack Marlon Brando in it to whack and I'll be a pig in shit
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Play Bad Company then. Its not in NAM but its the closest thing i think we'll see to a Full Metal Jacket game!!!

Funny you should say that, I'm playing through it at the moment.

It's not the same though is it? Graphics are ****ing pukka though.

I'm more intrigued as to what Infinity Ward will do with it than 'excited' per se. Activision seem intent on ruining every franchise they have at the moment with yearly (sometimes more... *cough* Guitar Hero *cough*) updates, and I can see Call of Duty getting stale if they carry on like this.

CoD4 was brilliant, undoubtedly, but that has been played to death by everyone. CoD5 was shite, sorry but it was trash. Last couple missions were good, the rest of it stank so rancidly of cash in, I completed it and haven't even been back for the achievements. And I love achievements.

Basically they need to do something really special this year. Like CoD4 all over again. In some ways, having two developers on the same game is a hinderance... Infinity Ward are the real deal, but Treyarch have tempered my enthusiasm for the series with their sub-standard output. Now I am fairly indifferent to anything CoD.

Still, look what 4 did for FPS's. Here's hoping Infinity Ward do it again, but for now, I'm going to resist soiling myself too heavily in anticipation.

the franchise may appear tired, but a decent FPS every 2 years isnt over the top. id trust IW more than most to make these "updates". im sure they will keep it fresh somehow.

It's already got old for me. If they fix the crappy spawns and make the maps bigger maybe I'll bite. I liked COD WAW even but jeez it's just spawn, die, kill spawn kill, die over and over. I'd say KZ2 is the most anticipated game of 09 and 08 and 07 since it has been delayed so much.

that adblock for firefox is brilliant

now CVG can actually load!

as for MW2 i think this might be the last COD i buy for this generation.

played WAW for 3 hours, completed it, went back to COD4 multiplayer.

looking forward to KZ2 though. 2 weeks to go!

 We actually agree on something on this forum!

you shouldnt be dying all the time. stop running about like a tw@t.

use a mode that doesnt allow respawning like search & destroy, unless your stupid that will teach you to stay alive longer the more you play it.

like giving a rat electric shocks until it behaves itself.

dont run out into the open like a moron. there are people just waiting on this.

A game coming out every 2 years is the perfect cycle. Never bothered with W@W - the setting got old during Medal of Honour on the PS2. COD4 is probably the only game I've played through in years on different difficulty levels. Awesome game.

COD6 is very much on my most wanted list of 2009, along with Battlefield 1943, Fuel and Mafia II. Already pre ordered KZ2 so that's been ticked... oh and the Agency looks pretty sweet. Oh and of course Bad Company 2.

Yawn...

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! :D

I agree too. Two years is good spacing for games. If they could somehow wheel them out every six months or so and they kept fresh with new ideas, then great but it's never going to happen!

I can just about handle the four or so year wait for a new Zelda, Mario etc but waiting six/seven years for F-Zero's is beyond a joke! And a new Mario Paint too, the 17 year wait is killing me.

Ok, so some people didn't "get" the COD4 bug, but to the millons that did this is great news. And just because a game gets a new version every year or two doesn't make it a crap game. Have these COD critics even played a COD game? :?

Sweet it's 2007 all over again:

2007: Halo 3
2009: Halo 3: ODST

2007: COD 4: MW
2009: COD 4: MW 2

2007: Bioshock
2009: Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams

2007: Mass Effect
2009: Mass Effect 2

Plus we get Resident Evil 5 this year too. 2009 is going to be awesome!!!

I mite be the only person, but i don't enjoy COD 4, yes the single player and multiplayer reinvigorated the series but for me WAW was by far the best in the series, COD 4 simply does not appeal to me, give me WW2 theatre anyday (yes i realise theres been a lot but not many that have been AWESOME i.e. WAW) Kudos to treyarch for continuing to create a good game rather than pandering to the generic oh look its the modern day wow genre which for me is getting more tiresome than WW2 (ghost recon, frontlines, battlefield, rainbow six) snore. Let the lynching commence.

>"the most anticipated title of all of 2009"
Well..good !
Does that mean we'll be able to fight for the countries invaded by the "Good Guys", as well as the GGs themselves in Single Player ?
Unlike WW2 where the "evil ones" were readily apparent, the modern world's wars cannot be demarcated so easily. It's a lot more complicated.

I played COD4 for a few missions, and could go no further, my conscience kept reminding me.." Why should I want to kill these people".
I had the same problem with all the Tom Clancy games. (Why would Mexico be an enemy of mine ?..or Venezuela..?.Just bloody insensitive !)

These concerns of gamers cannot be lightly dismissed, as good as the games may be technically.
War game publishers need to take this on board. Otherwise they are just playing footsie with the current political warmongers in their own government.
