January: Xbox Live's "biggest month ever"

Total number of 360 owners on the service now tops 17 million
Xbox Live had its "biggest month ever" in January, as 360 console sales hit 309,000 for the month, says Microsoft.

A record number of new members joined last month - more than any other month in Xbox history, claims the platform holder, taking the total number of 360 owners on the service to 17 million.

North American users making use of the Netflix movie service topped the one million mark, with an average of 16 movies (!) having been streamed to each household. Bring it to Europe now, please.

Extending the Xbox Live trumpeting, Halo Wars set the day-one record for the most demo downloads, with more than two million trials grabbed in the first week of February.

Meanwhile in the NPD sales results for North America five Xbox 360 games made the top ten; Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty: World at War, Skate 2, Lord of the Rings: Conquest and Gears of War 2. Obviously they were in the half of the top ten that goes below Wii Fit and Mario Kart, but those two don't count any more.

Xbox 360 sales were up 33 percent in the region from a year earlier, said Microsoft.

January sales ftw! Must be people looking for a nice cheap bargin on some tat to play a bit of lips & that in the movies game on before chucking it.

Oh wait, it's about Xbox Lolve. RIP

Nice work this is what i like to see now stop charging a subsription to your loyal fans mr Gates.
Posted by _Marty_
Must be all those people playing Minesweeper <pukes>
Posted by Dajmin
Is there really any need for that much flaming?

Yes, it should've been a free service, but it's not. Get over it. If you have nothing to add to the conversation it's normally best to shut up, to avoid annoying the ones who do.

@tommy
I'm with you on that one. I'm hoping that with the DLC and movie download income that they'll eventually write-off the charges. Maybe once the hardware sales stop at the new price...

i would rather pay a small fee and have a better, faster service than the ps3's rubbish PSN.

....and i have both before i start being called a fanboy.

I tend to believe that you get what you pay for. And £3 a month is hardly breaking the bank. makes me wonder though.

Why do people whinge about paying for live but don't about having to pay to play MMORPGs online which generally cost double what Live does a month.

Well said.

People complain about paying for LIVE yet happily pay for shit as lame as text messaging or ring tones...
Posted by _Marty_
I'd put money on the fact that the Xbox Live charges bother non-Xbox owners considerably more than it does those that do have one...
Posted by KK-Headcharge78
I know the ecominic climate is currently tighter than a midget ducks bum but come on you actually spent time to write moaning about £3 a month for live!!! By far the best console on-line service.

Any you people got phone's?? Well take a look at your £10-15 a month line rental and tell me it's good value. As for PC been free well of course it is, PC gamers are the tightest gamers ever! Just please Microsoft never join the XBox up with the PC lot online, it's bad enough having to deal with over enthusiastic weasels from Stockport who believe shouting in a high pitched chipmunk voice repeatedly is cool, a borefest from PC gamers would be too much.

PC Gamers are the future! Listen to them Men, they know what there talking about. They were there back when it all started and are currently lightyears ahead and a Hell of a lot more advanced than us mere mortal console players.

When I grow up I want to be a PC Gamer :D , thats the life for me, go onto a mesage board and just slate everything, you cannae beat it.
Posted by _Marty_
I think they already have, at least in part. Mate of mine has recently turned up on my friends list as he made/had to make a Games for Windows Live account - and I can see when he's online.
Or at least, when he's on playing Fallout 3.

I've even had messages from him...

Fantastic service and worth every penny.

And of course PC online gaming is free, nobody's playing the shit because as we all know, PC gaming (other than the ever popular WoW franchise which costs the princely sum of 9 squids per month), is completely screwed.

But no, apparently PC gaming is as buoyant and popular as ever!

I'd say thats an accurate assumption. Wonder how many of em have a PS3 or a wii?

Online on consoles basically can be broken down as follows.

1st LIVE
2nd PSN
3rd Nintendo Wifi

Although i'd say that wifi and PSn were alot closer to each other than LIVE which wipes the floor with both of em and before you begin i have all three.

i think pc gamers think everything should be free, even full releases that they download via some torrenting program. i do enjoy my pc games and cant believe how some companies have the cheek to think they charge us for something
Posted by Mogs
PC gaming is dead sadly.
Posted by J1GSAW
yep and PC wipes the floor with Xbox Lolve  truly is a clown shoes service, and dont get me started on Avatars. RIP RARE & MICROSOFT
Posted by Conkers
The PC isn't a console though, so what's your point?

my point is xbox lol

Must be great living in your ivory tower and your untouchable black dust collector.

Clutching at straws really, aren't we?

You can moan about having to pay for it, but dismissing it as a 'Clown Shoes' service is pretty ridiculous. It works like an absolute charm.

It's pretty much exactly what _Marty_ said - it seems as if it's the non-360 owners that complain more about the price of Live than those that actually do use it.

Also, what is your problem with Avatars? - they have absolutely no bearing on anything...if you had a 360 and hated the idea of them, you could simply not even bother - it's hardly going to change your gaming experience in any way.

:)

PCs can't be compared to consoles.

For a start if you buy a game on the PC you have to accept the fact that at some point it'll crash.

Hell if your systems a little old you might not even be able to play the damn thing.

Theres so many mitigating factors in PC gaming any kind of talk about them being better than console x is a moot point.

My points about PCs being a very expensive way to play the exact same games as modern consoles with prettier graphics and a lot less stability.

Also there is no standard provider for online play on the PC, its a moot point.

Hears a thought though. Why is it that the most popular Games on the PC MMO's charge a monthly fee. Is it because otherwise the service would be a little hit and miss.
Posted by lonewolf2002
So RIP Sony and Home and Ninty and WiFi too then by that reckoning? What has Rare got to do with the Live service and it's number of subscribers?

Personally I don't pay for Live gold as I feel you shouldn't have to pay to play but thats my choice.

I see, it's personal against MSoft and the Xbox.
Posted by Strollingchimp
i guess there will be a ps3 fanboy attack why are you looking at xbox news when you say it's so rubbish
Posted by Strollingchimp
fair enough all you people that say xbox live is rubbish is because they don't want to pay so i take that all those people that don't want pay for good online (PS3 Fanboys) are chavs
Posted by J1GSAW
Indeed Ps3 fanboys are chavs arent they

Does gramma like that go hand in hand with being on Xlol Live though?

when you say what!?

That’s not a point, that’s some incredibly inane and geeky internet slang/acronym.

Oh no Parma he don't love you anymore. Is ok now that she's moved back in with her mother you're free to do what you want again.
Posted by J1GSAW
sorry, I dont do requests.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Or rational thought, or humour, or logic it would appear.

I thought PC gamers were supposed to be intelligent. I guess every rule has its exception.
Posted by kricca
I recently had the misfortune of trying to arrange a COD:WAW game with a few friends on PSN.

We gave up and all played individually with random people.
Posted by ParmaViolet
I don't own a PS3, so I really can't comment on PSN - but, that doesn't sound good...is it just non-user-friendly, or unreliable?

Don't get me wrong - I don't particularly like paying for a Gold Live account (although, Jesper1675 makes it a little less painful than it could be) - but, I do think it is a great service. Just last night I popped on for a few games of FIFA 09....smooth and totally glitch free. It's also great jumping from game to game in a 'Party' - we went from Forza to Crackdown to FIFA a few days back...it's a great laugh.

Microsoft is nob, contemplate this on the tree of woe
Posted by blagger
I have both the ps3 and 360, if the ps3's online service was on a par with microsoft's(it isn't), i would happily pay for it.

The constant releases every week, the nicer dashboard(ps3 dash is very dull)and the better online features make paying for the 360 a non issue as far as i'm concerned.

I buy a lot of downloadable games(ps3 and 360)and the 360's service is far better.
I mean ffs, you can still buy games on the ps3 that don't support trophies(Sony sort yourself out).

Looking forward to checking out Flower later though, at least that has trophy support.

xbox live better than PSN LOL what a load of shit the tramps that are saying that should be shot.
Posted by blagger
You need to wipe the shit from your eyes crimbo lol
Posted by Joelwba
Some people reckon that PSN is better than live because it is free. An Xbox and a live subscription is cheaper than a PS3 on its own!
Posted by crimbo
shot
Posted by _Marty_
Few things.
Firstly, have you ever used Xbox Live?
Second, tramps? Is that some kind of dig that the PS3 is more expensive than the Xbox360? And in which case, if paying more for a product/service is a good thing, tell me again why Xbox Live is poor.
Thirdly, how do you not fall down more?
Posted by randomhero2
hey hey children play fair.

all i'm going to say is that wow is over 100pounds a year to play online. for my 40pounds a year i can play most of my games online, get free demos, decent dlc (i only get the good ones) and old or arcade games fairly cheaply and convieniently.

don't care about psn never used it can't say but i'd rather pay for xboxlive than for wow anyday. got it and found it to be the most expensive and most overrated game ever (the whole death thing walking back to my corpse just to not have enough health to runaway before i got killed again by thesame creature really got on my nerves.)

ps crimbo, there is no need to say anything as u clearly haven't tried xboxlive. and i'll say that the ps3 controller is possibly the worst controller ever made. no one in their right mind would place the underused directional pads in the place where the overused joystick should be. the only reason they put the first joystick there was because the majority of the games around when the dualshock came out were optimised only for the directionals. should have moved it for dualshock 2!!!
