ODST signals the end of Halo 3

Bungie declares the end is nigh, while hinting at more crossover content
Halo ODST, the stealth-orientated spin off of Master Chief's trilogy, will be the last of Halo 3, Bungie has said.

The Mythic map pack and ODST, both out later this year, will mark the "exclamation point" for 360's flagship shooter, Bungie told IGN.

"We are viewing the ODST campaign and the included multiplayer maps as the final exclamation point in our ongoing efforts to extend the Halo 3 experience," said Bungie's community director Brian Jarrard.

Meanwhile, Bungie's multiplayer designer Lars Bakken has told our gadget mates on T3 that there could be some surprises in store regarding crossover content between ODST and Halo 3.

"There are the Vidmaster Achievements that we've talked about a bit in the past," said Bakken, explaining: "The gist is that if you finish all 4 Vidmaster Challenges in Halo 3, and then also conquer the final 3 Vidmasters in Halo 3: ODST, players will unlock the coveted Recon armour in Halo 3."

He went on to add: "There just might be some other things too, but I don't think we can talk about that yet."

Ooh, you big tease!

Now they can stop milking that franchise and make a new IP. For me Halo 3 was such a disappointment. I would have prefered the Halo trilogy to be more evenly spaced, with Bungie releasing a new game in between the three Halos.

Either pass the franchise to someone else (Gearbox have been rumoured) with new ideas for the single player or take a break from it. The multiplayer was also pretty weak. I hope I don't stir up a hornet's nest here, but I just think that franchise is being milked now and has become quite stale.

"Can I haz recon plz" :D

Sad to see Bungie bringing an end to the Halo 3 content but I don't think anybody can really complain. The post-release content and updates for Halo 3 have been superb and along with the online stats tracking at Bungie.net have set a great example for other developers.

Looking forward to seeing what their first post-Halo project is.

Am I dumb...or missing something....what the hell does ODST stand for? Someone tell me as its bugging me now!

I can understand that people don't get on with the Halo 3 single-player campaign, but the multiplayer is far from weak. It's chart position for most played games on Live over the past year and a half is proof of that. Especially when you have limitless opportunity for gametype creation and map customisation through Forge.

And ODST stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Orbital_Drop_Shock_Trooper

Agreed. I'm not a huge Halo fan, but even I can recognise that Halo 3 set the benchmark for multiplayer shooters, and so far, no other FPS has reached that level. Or even come close.

However, didn't we already know this would be the last thing for Halo 3? No doubt Halo 4 will be right round the corner...

Either that or it's quite a way off so this is something to tide us over.

Halo 3’s multiplayer is awesome. So much fun, I went back to that after Call Of Duty very quickly… CTF is immense bombing around on a warthog…so many happy memories. The end if bad.

Maybe I worded that wrong. What I meant was that the biggest improvement in Halo 3 was the MP side of things, such as the Bungie.net community, the matchmaking and the Forge. However, many of the weapons feel wrong to me. An assault rifle should be pretty powerful at short to medium range. In Halo 3, no matter whether I burst fire or fully hold down the trigger, I just don't seem to damage enemies enough even when I aim for the head. It's always felt like I was doing something wrong.

I was saying to someone just yesterday how Halo MP plays different to traditional MP games, such as Unreal Tournament and Quake, and different to the more modern multiplayer shooter like COD. I also don't get on with the slow speed of movement.

All that being said, I do love the vehicles.

It's just different strokes for different folks. I don't really like the Unreal MP style, way too many people running around. I prefer smaller groups as you can develop some good rivalries.

Cheers for clearing that up 'altitude2k' I'll sleep better now...

I do occassionally get the urge to play Halo 3 sometimes, but none of my friends play it. If anyone wants to play MP with me then add me. My gamertag is 'BattleMoose87'.

My point in the above post was that Halo MP doesn't seem to fit in any traditional category.

Surely that's a good thing?

I must be missing something myself with Halo multiplayer. I have had a few games on it and tbh, I don't see anything new at all. I recognise that it is solidly build. What does it do that keeps everyone going back to? Maybe the console MP experience has been refined over the years since Goldeneye and Halo is the culmination of it all? Serious question I am not bashing btw. :)

I tend to agree with that and I think it's what gives Halo it's long lasting charm. I lost count of the number of hours whiled away playing split-screen on Halo:CE and subsequent efforts have further improved the multiplayer component IMO. The weapons don't all read like standard FPS fare and are mostly well balanced enough to give anyone a chance with any weapon if used correctly.

In my taste, Halo's multiplayer is right up there with Goldeneye's in terms of console shooters with the main advantage being the (IMO) superior control system of Halo. Either way, the Halo MP system is certainly unique and it's sure to be popular for a long time to come.

It’s just so much bloody fun! Everything about it, running up to people invisible and sticking a grenade on their face, doing an air jack from a mancannon, beating a tank that your hijacking, rocket races, zombie mode, hiding round a corner with a sword laying into unbeknownst enemies.

It’s much more varied than its counterparts, and again I cannot pour enough praise on it. My own personal tastes I know, but it’s so much bloody fun!!!

Possibly, although I meant in gameplay it seems old and stodgy. In it's list of gameplay options and variants I acknowledge that it is one of the most varied console shooters.

In fact I may give it one last go later on. And to be honest I have only ever really played Team Slayer.

I hope they continue with Halo games, as i am a big fan of the games and the universe they have created. Loved Halo 3, i found its single player campign good and furfilling (you proberly have to finish the other 2 to understand fully whats going on) and its great online play. Looking forward to whatever they do next, certainly if its Halo-related

I spent yesterday getting over fanboyism, so I'm saying this purely as a fellow gamer. I would not pay for Halo 3. Not the dlc, but the actual full game. I admit the first one was entertaining, I have it on PC, I play multiplayer occasionally, which shows how good it is, im still playing it. But I havent touched the campaign for months. It just got tedious. True, the multiplayer is epic, epic fun on all Halo games (not sure about wars), but I don't like paying £40 - £50 for a game just for its multiplayer. Warhawk was a good online only game and it was £20 on launch, with a free headset. If they released Halo 3 Multiplayer standalone, I'd buy it probably, but the franchise has been milked to the point of madness. It was tired in terms of story by the 2nd one.

Glad to come into a forum thread that isn't just outright Halo bashing.

For me it is still the ultimate online shooter on console. I've got Gears 2, Bad Company, COD 4 and Left 4 Dead but it's Halo I always come back to.

Firstly, the weapons are the most balanced of all the above. They are not confined to the real world so they can make all sorts of mad weapons based on their mechanics. The equipment and heavy weapons add another layer of strategy over the other halos and there's a control setup for every occasion. Vehicle play and regular on foot combat actually feel like they occupy the same space physically which was unheard of before Halo.

The game is incredibly refined and the matchmaking has set the standard for the industry.

The single player is not as genre defining as it was but Halo deserves a lot of respect for what it's brought to the table. Recharging shields and checkpoints were just not about before the first Halo.

I can understand why it's not people's thing, but the truth is that it is a true hardcore game. It's a game that requires a hell of a lot of skill, any spammer can get on COD 4 and get a few kills but give a master a BR and he will take anyone out.

For everyone complaining that it's just a game where people run at each other, you have a valid point but it's not an issue when you get good enough to overcome them quickly.
