It's likely that there's already a team well into it's development. But with the PS3 sales dwindling, they're not likely to say the PS4 is close. The limited potential customers will just wait, thinking that a PS3 is a waste of money if it will just be replaced. No technology is 'future-proof', least of all home video games consoles. Why do tech companies insist on over using cliched PR phrases I'll never know. "not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof"
*scoffs* I would bet my House that we see a new Sony console before 2014 though I would expect Sony to support it until that time.
Clever marketing talk, that is all. lol,my C64 is future proof too, cant see why anyone would need anything else 20148? Are you Immortal Stone Cold? Too true. You'll notice that at no point did the Sony rep say that there wouldn't be a PS4 released in that time frame. There'll be a PS4 out 2012-ish (provided no bizarre laser c-ups like last time) sure as 'eggs-is-eggs', which would make for a 5yr cycle just like it's always been.
The rep is only talking about sales and console support for PS3, nothing here rules out a new console in the traditional time frame. Only sales really matter to these guys - and with PS3 they reckon they can justify supporting the console and continuing to sell it for longer than they have with PS2.
Sony may still be selling PS2s after 8 years, but it sure as hell wasn't 8 years until PS3 arrived! 20148? I would hope so. Haven't you heard? It's "future-proof". Therefore it's plainly obvious that they won't need another console for 18,410 years! Sorry man, I have to;
I'd like to think we'd be way beyond Playstation 4 by 20148- I'd like to think we're off conquering the universe by then!! :P If Sony spent as much on R+D as they have on the PS3 now they'd go broke. They have to go 10 years to earn some cash off it and that's debatable the way things are going. If I had a £ for every time they mentioned 'with the power of the Cell' i'd have more money than Sony! (that'll be about £8 then  ) I dont know how the Hell I got that year   . You know what I meant anyway, I hope. I've no doubt that it will outlast the PS2...In the warehouses in their millions gathering dust like the Ark of the Covenant. When I think about the sony consoles, i also begin to think about Microsoft Operating Systems.
Windows XP = Playstation 2 (trusted and loved) Windows Vista = Playstation 3 (complicated systems) Windows 7 = Playstation 4 (improvement with cleaner design and easier to program) lol. However i doubt it'll ever become somekind of mythical artifact.
A Working 360 after 2000 years Now that'd be a miracle. Yeah I knew what you meant but sadly couldn't resist  It was a bit of fun while everyone else gets their knickers in a twist over some marketing bluff. They couldn't afford to release a new console anytime soon, that's why. it that the same warehouse with James Woods in it.  Future proof? Even if the future involves a horde of alien robot zombies destroying the planet? Its been a long day, we had our Q1 kick off yesterday in a casino in Glasgow and lets just say im a little fragile today and will probably fall down a few times before the day is out.
Spelling and punctuation go out the window!  And this is new news???
I don't get what future proof means. Well I understand what it means, but I've never understood how it applies to consoles as they are not future proof, if they were we'd never need to upgrade! »the Glasshouse casino or riverside? every time i go to the glasshouse one there's no one playing poker. When it does launch, it's gonna be called PS4D/PS4-D (4th Dimension), watch this space, ahem! Good. I don't have a PS3 yet :) »»
Actually, it was the Alea, very plush and fancy. We had a free bar from 4:30 through to 2:30 this morning though! A lot of empty seats and frazzled faces today. This is my favourite part:
"...with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof,".
 Yeah right. I understand the message he is trying to send but it's patently hollow to anyone who has half an idea about current gaming hardware. This is even more so when you look at current PC hardware that blows the oh-so-vaunted "power of the Cell processor" right out of the water and into yester year!
I still stand by my prediction that we will see a new console from someone by 2011 or so. It belongs in a museum!!!
:) maybe i'm just a sucker who falls for all the marketing speak but it dos feel like this round of the console cycle might last a little longer.
the power of current machines (except the wii obv) is pretty huge and what they can put out in terms of visuals and sound is amazing. apart from motion sensitivty and 3d - both of which can eaisly be added - there's only so far you can raise the power. add to this the fact that they make money on games not consoles and you can see why its in microsoft and sony's interest to make this cycle last longer
now i'm going to go back to my dream of the next cycle being 1 machine with interface and networking by microsoft, internals by Sony and finishing touches from nintendo and smile. given the current recession I dont think we will be seeing new consoles from anyone for quite some time, no one can take such a big financial risk before this generation has even paid itself off. 2011 or so? So maybe 2012. Possibly 2013. Okay, 2014 at the latest.
And the award for vaguest comment of the day goes to... 2-3 years tech wise is a "long time". Besides, the global economy may be clawing back lost territory within the next two years. Maybe. Access to credit will probably not be the same again for generations to come and rightfully so in my opinion. Sure, as long as you're willing to accept the Day's Award of Most Obtuse and Disingenuous. Your twisting of my words and addition to the time line were not only unoriginal, they are also flat out false. You fail. Care to try again? » And there was I thinking 360 owners were insecure, defensive tw@ts with no sense of humour. Thanks for proving me right. »»
You fail again seeing as how I don't own a 360. Care to try yet again? 8) Incidentally, if you are going to start throwing your weight around it would be presumptuous of you to expect that others, like myself, will just take it lying down. As the saying goes, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. »»» What is it with you and your retarded 'you fail' comments? You must have been bullied to within an inch of your life at school. Honestly, I feel sorry for you. My PS3 is so future proof that the hard drive just crashed after owning it for 2 days. Nice. Replace the highlighted bit with any of the following for a FAR more accurate statement: 360 fanboys PS3 fanboys Wii fanboys crimbo or svd_grasshopper Lies, PS3's never break down. »»»»
You are typical example of a blowhard who is all hot air and no substance. You come in here and start a fight yet as soon as you are called on your bullish attitude you pretend to be the injured party. Your weak and petty antics are equally as tiresome and lacklustre as they are pathetic. Now why don't you run along and go play in your sandbox or whatever it is you pass the time with before your mother tells you it's time to go to bed? Why dont you just bugger off, all you ever do is spout a load of rubbbish or moan about which games you are not buying because of drm  Wait a minute, if PC hardware is so advanced, how come the games that have blown me away graphically recently are on PS3?
I mean, that Killzone 2 demo is eye-candy of the highest order and Uncharted 2 looks as though graphically it will set a new benchmark, at least for 3rd person games.
I know full well that on paper, PC hardware is advanced of anything inside PS3 now, but I have yet to see a game either last year or coming this year for PC that is technically in advance of what we have seen on PS3. In fact it has been the opposite, as even CVG remarked 'Killzone 2 has raised the bar for graphics'.
Now the power is there to utilise for PC games, but if devs don't push the hardware or have the money to do so, then we will continue to be deceived into thinking the Cell processor is indeed the monster Sony have been shouting about.
Keep up the baiting. 8) all i need is a new dreamcast....man nostalgia's a slow acting poison.... After you, old boy. Your personal taste is not something I'm going to speculate on. Nor for that matter, the games you have, and haven't, seen or played on both the PS3 and the PC.
Keep on keepin' on baiting. 8) You must be ignoring the fact that the PS3 struggles to hit resolutions as low as 1080i/p.
What resolution is KZ2 running at and how many fps? Answer = 720p and 30fps
Compare that to a game using the CryEngine 2 at 2560 x 1600 with loads of AA and AF and gaming PC's are still pushing frames well over 30fps. If you drop it down to 1900 x 1200 then it's over 60fps.
In case you hadn't noticed Crysis/Warhead are photorealistic in a lot of places too, that's something that KZ2 doesn't achieve.
If you're only playing Fifa09 and Guitar hero, then I wouldn't expect you to know which games are pushing graphical boundaries. Considering that you don't have a 360 or a gaming PC, what exactly are you using for your benchmarks?....screenshots on PS3 websites? |
