It's gonna take something quite special to convince me to part with cash for RE5, which is a shame because I had been looking forward to it before playing the demo. does the US OPM ever give a big game anything less???? not that the game wont be excellent but i would never trust those payed off wankers in a million years i have all resi games and i have to say being a number 1 fan the demo left me feeling a little worried. after the perfect wii resi 4 this felt a little and looked a little gears of war type stuff. i hope i'm wrong and they've kept the huge game play levels and hours upon hours of lush graphics and gameplay / exploration that was resi 4 and not gone all out for online playability like cod 4. i've seen the same fate with the latest tombraider. fantastic graphics but to be completed in 6 hours is not value in my book. all thse games (like gears) look great but for are always far too short. i'm sure though it will be fine. :? i have all resi games and i have to say being a number 1 fan the demo left me feeling a little worried. after the perfect wii resi 4 this felt a little and looked a little gears of war type stuff. i hope i'm wrong and they've kept the huge game play levels and hours upon hours of lush graphics and gameplay / exploration that was resi 4 and not gone all out for online playability like cod 4. i've seen the same fate with the latest tombraider. fantastic graphics but to be completed in 6 hours is not value in my book. all thse games (like gears) look great but for are always far too short. i'm sure though it will be fine. :? i have all resi games and i have to say being a number 1 fan the demo left me feeling a little worried. after the perfect wii resi 4 this felt a little and looked a little gears of war type stuff. i hope i'm wrong and they've kept the huge game play levels and hours upon hours of lush graphics and gameplay / exploration that was resi 4 and not gone all out for online playability like cod 4. i've seen the same fate with the latest tombraider. fantastic graphics but to be completed in 6 hours is not value in my book. all thse games (like gears) look great but for are always far too short. i'm sure though it will be fine. :? I think the game is terrible (from the demo and trailers), and Im a huge RE Fan.
Then again I expected high reviews, it is a shooter after all.  I only spent ten minutes with the demo, but first impressions weren't that good. It felt clunky, but I'll try again and amend the controls to see if that helps. Ok, played it through 5 or six times on both levels and the RE structure has aged badly.
The frustrations i had with RE4 (which i really love) are still here in RE5. Stop aim shoot, stop aim shoot just doesn't cut if for me any more.
It must be because Dead Space has spoiled me. Everything that Resident Evil did badly Dead Space refined to such a degree that some of resident evils biggest floors are Dead Spaces biggest pluses. Something as simple as walking and firing make dead space far superior than RE5. Compared to Dead Space the RE5 control system is antiquated. Review already? Still over a month til the game is released. Good to see it getting high marks anyway, it's my most anticipated game probably of this gen.
"RE5 does a great job of mixing gameplay styles to create a sense of pacing that flows between high octane shootouts to more subdued, eerie exploratory sequences..." - sounds like they've got the mix right in a similar way the 4th game did. Cool! i downloaded the demo last week and wasn't that impressed but when i first started playing resi4 it didn't do much for me to start with but when i got more into it it was superb so i will wait until its released to really pass judgement To be honest, I think Dead Space is a better Game then resi 5, mostly because it's a much scarier game, trust me , dead space with PS3, HD TV and Surround sound is a frighting experience. But Resi 5 was just like Gears2 in a bizarre. I'll skip resi 5 for Killzone 2, a much better game. Maybe the PS3 has soome superior control system as the demo on 360 sucks, the controls suck, you cant run and gun, you cant turn fast and fire, u cant do sod all, you cant duck & cover, its pants...I cancelled my preorder, so the PS3 version must have a a different control system, like AITD...AVOID RE5, get L4D yeah rocks! Yeah going to agree with that. gave the demo a go and it's totally put me off the game now. its resi it plays like resi whot did you expect!!!   i just played the demo and , well; firstly, the graphics are absolutely amazing, i honsetly dont think ive seen anything quite as polished as them on the playstation 3 so far, that will be overcome with killzone 2 next month anyway to the gameplay, i found it good, but the movement was too slow , and the camera seemed to not go where i wanted, just too clunky, the most annoying thing i found was that i ran out of ammo way too easily, i will give the demo another play through, and it may grow on me, but at this moment in time, i wont be purchasing. hope i helped. anyone who says that this game is a GoW wannabe is a ****ing retard. Its essentially the same controls as Resi 4 which was out before Gow, so **** you.
Downloading the demo as i type this, looking forward to it, played it on my mates ps3 the other day, it was pretty awesome. How can u complain aba Res5's clostraphobic alies and limited ammo its survival as stage 1 of the demo proves....the graphics are laser sharp on the PS3.....and yes the x360 version does seem clumsey especial with those triggers and slow motion with the analogue movement ......i set mine to the max. on sensitivity and stil found the default setting on the Dualshock3 alot more responsive...If u hav a PS3 NO DOUBT BUY THIS GAME I thought this game was going to be balls but after playing the demo I am in love. I love how frantic it is searching for every last bullet while running away from zombies and a boss! But I do agree with the controls being wonky, the guy moves like a Hummer!
I must get this game... First complaint is it took me just over 2 and a half hours to download the demo! (must have a problem with my internet)
Secondly i have always and still do describe resi 4 as the best game i have ever played! However i feel underwhelmed by resi 5 so much is makes me upset. Even little things like clicking the start button on the main menu, to hear a different voice saying 'resident...evil...5'. The whole menu setup also seems very arcadey.
Maybe its just that i havent played resi 4 for so long but it seems that the controls have aged so badly. Yes dead space has already spoiled resi 5 by allowing us to move and shoot which becomes annoying after several attempts to move chris through an open door with my gun pointed and ready, only to find him stuck to the floor like glue.
I dont like the whole thing with enemies spewing from all different angles, it makes the game feel clumsey and unnecessary. Plus I hate the fact you have a partner, this should be for online or offline co-op only in my opinion. I mean how ridiculous is it when shes being grabbed by an enemy and chris' attempt to help her is just to punch through her into the zombie.
I may just be nit picking but resi 4 was epic, even though i miss the resi's of old, 4 was still magical and yet 5 seems so clumsey, i can only hope that playing through from start to finish will make me think otherwise, but with new people creating this resi it feels as though they have taken some of the magic away.
I will say it looks superb though! 2 and a half hours and your complaining. i had it on for 2 hours last night and 4 hours this morning and its only at 92%. sony realy needs to pull there finger out of there ass and update there servers. and no its not my internet speeds i downloaded Ubuntu wich is around 1.4 GB and it only took me 75 minutes. Sony fanboys already saying it is superior on the ps3 without even knowing what its like on the 360. Someone says the demo is crap, well they must have played it on the 360 because nothing on the ps3 is crap. This is just getting sad. gears of war, how? i really was disappointed at the start, but now after having played it for a few hours and having completed both levels, i can safely say it is going to be really great. i think people who are moaning about it probably haven't got the flow together yet, give it time!
once you drop the executioner and chainsaw man, it is a damn good feeling. just you wait and see. i do agree about dead space taking the piss out of it, but then ds was an unbelievably brilliant effort very influenced by RE4.
so here's hoping 5 follows suit and surprises us with it's power in march. i've ordered my special edition steelbook version and i'm excited. I don't get the comparisons with Gears at all; Resi is an entirely different animal. Other than maybe the viewpoint.
That said, I was left entirely un-grabbed by the demo. I really enjoyed Resi 4 on Wii and my little brother loves the Cube version, but I just couldn't get into this. No mention of the f**king annoying 5Gb!!! Install 4 the PS3!?...this is Another game I'll be getting for my 360.... I expected that they would at least try to bring not only the graphics but also the controls to the new gen. This gives me the same feeling as GT or MGS. Outdated graphical updates of games that were once genre-defining. Still good games but not cutting-edge anymore for anyone but their fans.
I'm still going to get RE5 because I love the atmosphere and I'll get used to the controls, but judging by the demo it is not the step forward I was hoping for. You can't expect anything less from a PS mag, a five star scale leaves little room for detail anyway.
If the control are the same as the ones in RE4 then good :P , they are supposed to fuel tension.
My issue is that the game seems to recycle everything from RE4 and that it is a total action game now (which the co-op proves). Practise. Practise. Practise.
This isnt a game that you can just pick up and blast through, you have to get good at it! It plays just like RE4 and we have only seen 2 areas of the game, whilst it may not contain the creepy scares of the originals it will certainly pack a punch or 2.
I actually dont know what people were expecting, the ability to run around and shoot? That defeats the purpose and gameplay style of the Resident Evil franchise, 4 is held in such high regards and 5 seems to improve upon them, im in! I spent the whole time I was playing the demo wishing it was as fast-paced and intuitive as Gears. I knew it was a different game and that it was much slower paced, but I couldn't help but think it. I just got bored in the end. I too can'tunderstand the 'Gears wannabe' comments.
Did none of you play Resident Evil 4?
That, unfortunately, is my concern. It basically is Resident Evil 4, with co-op tacked on, a menu ripped straight from Dead Space and shiny graphics.
No doubt it'll be good, but 3rdperson shooters have moved on a lot in the last 4 years, Gears being a prime example.
It's nothing like Gears, and in fairness has stayed true to it's roots, but those roots are aging and you wonder if they may have been better off cribbing off Gears et al just a little bit.
Still, love Resi, so despite my reservations, it's a must buy all day long, regardless of what the mags say. Does anyone else think that Dead Space's 'scariness' went out the window after the first chapter?
The opening was scary, runnning from that thing with no weapons, and lets not forget the first time you dropped one of those things only to find as you walked over it that it was infact only playing dead.
However that all happened in the first chapter, after that the 'scares' were all the same. (Though I will concede that the final scene of the game, after he's flying off in his ship. THAT was scary)
It especially didn't help that the weapons you picked up early on carried you through the entire game with ease (ammo being far to plentiful), rather than a mentality of "This, this is all i've got?!?" it was more a "Say hello to my little friend!"
Don't get me wrong, the game was sound. I just think it would have been better labeled as an action shooter, rather than a survival horror. As the former it is great, as the latter it is strictly average.
*Note: the game was played on a 42-inch hdtv with surround sound, at night, on the hardest difficulty - not a boast, just outlining my experience*
What does everyone else think? I haven't cancelled my preorder yet but the demo didn't overwhelm me. Yes its only a demo but I can't see this demo being 'old' and Capcom only releasing it now. With the game around the corner, it does seem a little worrying. I didn't think it compared well to Resident Evil 4. The controls are what I expected though I found the mapping of controls to buttons more suited to the Gamecube pad. And the Wii version's controls were even better.
Also, I didn't feel the game had enough 'weight' to it. In RE4, when you shot the enemies, there was a kind of meatiness to it. In this, it just felt flimsy.
And I'd never trust a review from an official PS or XBox mag, particularly PS ones. Its like these people have never played a game before.
We'll have to see... SuperCinos, play it on hard or impossible and you'll definitely run out of ammo at times. so it's better than 4 then?
doubt it.
i was playing the wii version of 4 at the same time as the japanese demo hit 'live and was gutted at how much of a step backwards the demo was over the wii version.
pisspoor resi 0 mechanics, terrible aiming (even with the controls set to resi 4 style) and an obvious emphasis on online co op play have pretty much sealed 5's fate.
i've cancelled the pre order and i'll pick it up for a tenner come xmas.
get mikami back capcom before the zero team kill your main franchise. Agreed. I went through it on hard first, and I had to sell a gun at one point to buy enough ammo to get through a particularly tough section... Nit funny, especially when I'd spunked some nodes on the damn thing. Hmmm, not sure what to do about this un.
Part of me wants to believe the hype/reviews and just wait for the game - I generally try to avoid demos as I feel they're a minor spoiler of the gameplay and especially the graphics.
However, the other part of me is taking heed of all the shortcomings I'm hearing (e.g. having to stand still to shoot :x ) and I'm thinking should I try before I buy? :? In this case I would definately try the demo before buying, you dont want to end up wasting your money.
I was a huge RE fan (its like my favourite franchsie), and was severely disapointed with the demo, so much so in fact that I am most likely not even going to buy the game at all.
So seriously, even though I understand your point about demo's, in this case Id definately try it out. I did say I played it on the hardest setting. What's the point otherwise?
Hand on heart though, by the time i'd gotten through to the final boss, I had so much munitions that I just stood there and pelted it with hot plasma goodness. It was almost too easy.
I will concede that in the first chapter I was running low on supplies, but that was before I discovered that the glowing boxes contained ammo (hand-to-face moment right there).
But anyway, we've strayed from the point. Did anyone actually find it scary, past the first chapter or two? If so which bits? Maybe i've just subconciously forgotten them to preserve my sanity. :P If you class being scared as BOO and RAR moments, then no wonder you weren't much scared past Chapter 1. Dead Space's scariness came with its atmosphere, in which it had by the bucketload. I was rather tense, and yes scared, throughout my entire run through the game. I was never quite at ease while playing. This was mainly down to the absolute amazing sound quality, but also the believability factor of the game world itself.
I've been through Dead Space 4 times now, on every setting. There are still certain sections of the game where no matter what you do, you'll be low on ammo and health - more so on the harder settings. There are sections, like near the end, where you'll have too much ammo and health. This can be said about the early Resident Evil games aswell, same thing could happen.
The term survival-horror has moved on with the games, I feel. Starting with Resident Evil 4 and onwards, survival-horror has changed.
Dead Space has some of the best controls I've ever experienced in a third-person game. Being a massive fan of Resi 4, and after playing the demo of the 5th game, it's still my most anticipated game of this gen. I could not give a shit that you can't move while shooting. I agree with the above post, dead space gave us scares through its dark and creepy atmosphere, it was a super game and i played through it 3 times to gain a platinum trophy, and one of the trophies was completing the game using only the plasma cutter, i did that whilst playing it on impossible mode and let me say, that is f*cking hard! always running out of ammo, the amount of times i had to use stasis and then melee the enemies!
As for resi 5 i think the main thing that really really bugs me is the co-op feature. I just feel it should be an option. I hate having an A.I character follow me around, i think it worked ok in resi 0 as it was the old school resi games, but the way 4 and 5 have gone it doesnt seem right to have an annoying side kick.
I just think capcom are trying to cash in on the co-op and i think they should really consider who and how they make their next resi.
I still wish though, that they would just remake resi 1,2,3 and code veronica in lovely next gen. Then i wouldnt mind them cashing in on that id pay for all of them. I can't really comment on other peoples experiences with the ammo aspect. For me, on the hardest difficulty I had no problems, for others that was most likely different.
The problem with the atmosphere (not saying this game is unique with this) was that it was the same throughout the game...you grew used to it very quickly.
By about halfway through you had already seen all the monsters and all that was left were black variants of those. Yes they took more ammo to drop, but the tactics for each were always the same.
Also, I found the atmosphere was destroyed by the weapons themselves. The line cutter was so perfect for killing those things, that a dark eary corridor was no longer a threat, since you knew the gun would protect you.
Now take that same corridor, remove the line cutter and add a wrench...I'm running back the other way before you can even say "What the **** is tha..."
Condemned 2. Now that was a game that was genuinly scary and not just Boo and Ahh moments. The mannequins anyone? The hospital? Perfectly timed moments and all you had at hand to deal with them was a 2 by 4 with a nail in it. A rusty nail, but a nail none the less.
Please don't get me wrong. I loved the game, the controls were solid, the menus inspired. The sounds...fantastic. I loved it when the holograms projected from the suit, that was a nice touch.
I'm just saying that the developers tried to make a scary game but shot themselves in the foot by making our weapons too powerful and basically showing all their cards right at the beginning of the game.
That opening scene as you're being chased down that corridor. That was a truly classic moment; I honestly felt like I was there. Running as fast as my legs could carry me, diving into that elevator and that small sigh of relief. The chuckle. The full on laughter...then that ****** opens the elevator door.
I could have built a house with the number of bricks that moment produced.
There wasn't another like it the entire game. :( its really good :) changeed my mind ,... i think u need to play it a few times ... the first level isnt very good but the second bit is i thought ... :) I'm not exactly a big Resi fan I'll have to admit, although I have bought various versions (Code Veronica on Dreamcast, springs to mind) in the past but have never really sat down with them for long.
I was really excited by the hype of this new version, but after downloading the demo, I quickly played it but it didnt really excite me. I'll have to get into and see what happens though. I'm going to pick up a Wii at some point and a copy of Resi 4 as that was something I missed out on.
I'll probably buy this game though....just not in too much of a rush. |
