Wii's "roaring growth" over?

Concern rises over Nintendo's forecast reductions
Nintendo has vastly outstripped competitors this hardware generation, selling nearly 100 million DS handhelds and 45 million Wiis to date.

But when Nintendo said it would be slashing full-year net income forecasts by one-third to $2.55 billion, analyst Hiroshi Kamide with KBC Financial Products speculated that the Wii craze may be burning out--an almost unthinkable prospect amongst many industry watchers.

"Today's revision suggests that the roaring pace of Wii growth that we've seen until now may be over," he said in a report in the Times.

"The numbers also imply that we are going to see a sudden collapse in the fourth quarter from record margins to some of the thinnest margins Nintendo has experienced for three years."

Nintendo also drew back Wii unit shipment forecasts for the full year by 1 million units to 26.5 million.

Kamide added that Nintendo may "know something big has gone wrong, and that people are not buying the machines."

The analyst rates Nintendo shares at "sell," a rarity among games analysts.

General commentary amongst English-speaking Internet outlets and anecdotal evidence suggest that gamers had trouble finding Wii hardware at retail during the holidays, although the supply situation has improved over the past months as Nintendo ramped up production.

Other U.S.-based analysts still believe Nintendo has strong fundamentals, but a strengthened yen has negatively affected the exporter of software and hardware.

Softening Japanese sales have also hurt Nintendo, although strong North American and European sales have partially offset the shortfall, said Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, who rates Nintendo shares as "buy."

Arvind Bhatia with Stern Agee was also less alarmed as Kamide in his assessment. "We do not necessarily view the reduction in forecast as a negative given Nintendo has been increasing its forecast all year.

"Rather, we think supply constraints during the holiday season resulted in Nintendo losing sales and management is now factoring this in its revised forecast. We note that Wii hardware was out of stock in the US in late December/early January.

This is just stupid to be honest.

Oh Wiiboy, supper's served!
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
what a load of tosh. wish i got paid 50k a year to guess.

I know this might sound ludicrous but maybe, Nintendo have cut thier forecasts because of a high yen and the bloody global recession, Deciding to be realistic about the current financial climate rather than trying to ignore it.

I would have picked up a wii if it came out for the rumoured(at the time)£99.

But it's incredibly overpriced for what it is(a souped up gamecube).
I'm glad i've stuck to my decision to overlook it this time around.
There doesn't seem to be a massive amount of quality games on it either(retail or downloadable).

Full marks to nintendo for convincing the public that the motion controller is something amazing and tapping into the family market.
They've certainly done a great job with it no matter how weak the machine is technically.
Posted by palancas7
@WHERESMYMONKEY: That's pretty much a given, but... some people just see what they want to see.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
 Wiiboy was banned if I recall correctly.
Posted by jubbgi01
No wii boy in a nintendo thread is like not having the reggie "huh" image on it. A disaster.

IN MEMORIUM I WILL CAPITALISE THIS SENTENCE FOR ALL!
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Todays hot topic? Probably not.

*Awaits consolodated fanboy attack by both MS and Sony fanboys*

The one thing that can agree on is they both hate Nintendo.

In the wiis defence about it being overpriced, when it first came out it was half the price of the competition. Nintendo just haven't seen any need to drop the price. If you sold a product flying off the shelves you wouldn't drop the price just for the sake of it. Its just good business sense.
Posted by kimoak
If the Wii is overpriced, what about the PS2 then? £93 from Amazon... Why? Because it is still selling really well.
Posted by Osiris25
Hmm a month ago there was saying sells are through the roof and its never going to end and then suddenly its all over and doomed. Analysts just come out with stuff every week trying to justify there wages. The fact that the almost everyone is announcing reduced forecasts is more to do with the economy and the value of currency than a sudden lost of interest in the product. As for the overpriced debate I don't think its overpriced at all. When you consider the fact that there is Wi-fi built in and the motion sensing technology as well, plus it has to be noted that ninty make a small profit on the machine and lost a load like the ps3 and 360, which both are only just starting to break even.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
yes, the sales are going to INCREASE. its ****ing january. christmas is over. the wii is a present, not something you want for yourself. they will reduce the price mid year and let sales take off again, and again next christmas the sales will continue.
Posted by ensabahnur
nah it isn't gonna happen is it. only seems to be MS or Sony stories that get the blood boiling in some people. pity really as i was gonna post the lineage of Pope's down the years today starting with Peter the rabbit.
Posted by J1GSAW
well it had to come to an end sometime, was only a mattter of time before the public realised that the wii was an expensive gimmick with no decent games.

RIP Nintendo

*sigh* Another blinkered view from a troll! Fool.
Posted by ensabahnur
come on, they're probably sitting on enough cash to see them past the PS5 and still have enough left to feed the starving of the world with caviar.
Posted by Dajmin
The theory is that Japan's sales are only slowing down because everyone has one and the market has reached saturation point.
Whereas the sales in the US have slowed because the supply of Wiis is still really slow and obviously you can't buy what doesn't exist.

It's hardly shocking that after 2 years and 100-bajillion sales they might have got to the stage where everyone who wants one already has one :)
Posted by voad
Pretty sure that was just a poor attempt at sarcasm on Jigsaws part.

I don't know what all this doom and gloom from analysts is about. I believe they only pulled back on their previous estimates by 3%, pretty damned conservative considering the state of the World economy.
Posted by Biggwedge
Nintendo uses an ounce of brainpower to play it safe and people suddenly freak out  .

The Wii isn't going anywhere, especially as third parties are starting to see sense.
Posted by fanboy
I think the fact they have reduced their estimates is pretty much confirmation that there wont be a price cut this year. They wouldnt of done that if they had one planned.

And whats the bloke on about regarding margins? If Nintendo sell less their margins wont change, just the net profit. These guys just dont have a clue.

Whats stopping you. I'll put the ol Ninty fanboy hat for you if you want. It'd be worth to get such an awesome post out.

It'll take me back to my N64 days. ahem....

Not bad, I like the all caps and the misspelling of Wii. I think it needs multicolored text and some really outrageous claim. Like Sony funds terrorists or Bill Gates eats babies. And then go on about imaginary wars and make lists out of random things.

WE IS TEH GREATEST CONSOLE EVORZ. IT IS MADE BY NINTENDO THE COMPANY THAT INVENTED GAMES CONSOLES ALL THE COMPETITION IZ MADE BY WANNABE NINTENDO COMPANIES THAT FUND TERRORISM AND KILLED JESUS!

HITLER HAD A 360 BUT WAS BANNED FROM LIVE, HE WAS ANGRY DONT KNOW WHY ITS OVERPRICED AND DIES ALL THE TIME

WE HAS THE LOWEST FAIL RATE AND THE BESTEST GAMES.

PS3 IS AN OVERPRICED BLURAY PLAYER WITH NO GOOD GAMES. SONY IS RUN BY A GROUP OF DEMONS THAT WANT TO STEAL YOUR SOUL AND BUM YOOOO.

I aim to please!

I especially like the use of the word hail. Yeah it's spelt wrong, but the minor reference to Hitler makes it amusing. :)

And, to comment on the article...

even though there is no chance of the people not buying a wii, you have to think that by now most people who are going to want one will probably have brought one by now. kids grow up and want a console so there will always be demand but i could accept it if sales began to decrease due to lower demand.

what they need to start doing is bringing out some decent games for it (madworld looks awesome) to keep the hardcore entertained then they'll still be above the xbox/ps3.

i know pilot wings is now a no no as the dev shut up shop last year but more lylat wars, zelda, mario and some new ip's please ninty
Posted by nuggit3000
Yes its true the Wii's sales are slowing down, but I'm sure Nintendo have nothing to worry about.
Lets face, they are getting away with selling their console for nearly twice as much as a console at least 4 times as powerful, with more features than gaming.

If Nintendo ever did get worried, Im sure they could half the price of Wii and still make a proffit
Posted by ensabahnur
»well i tried but it won't let me post something as big as the list i copied from wiki. so instead i'll just post this

Leonardo da Vinci was actually a member of the Hare Club and that St. Peter was not a man but a rabbit (Peter Rabbit), and that laser imaging shows that da Vinci originally portrayed St. Peter as a rabbit instead of as a man in his painting of the Last Supper. Teabag explains that Jesus knew that no human could speak for all Christianity without any acts of corruption, and that rabbits were pure, tolerant, and incorruptible. This is why the Pope's crown is shaped to accommodate a rabbit's ears. He also explained that the Catholic Church had thought of the secret of Easter as blasphemy, deciding to bury it and put a man in charge, and the Hare Club members came with the concept of decorating eggs for generations to keep the secret in da Vinci's painting alive. He further explains that Snowball is actually a direct descendant from St. Peter,

It seems as we go deeper into recession the analysts are becoming more and more active! How can anyone justify paying these idiots when people with real skills are loosing their jobs?
Posted by crimbo
hahahhahaha get it right yae wiiboy101 the wii is a cheap overpriced failure.
Posted by milky_joe
Pretty sure that as of November/December Nintendo were breaking all kinds of sales records, so I don't think they'll be too concerned.

If sales are down now it's simply because Christmas has come and gone.
Posted by leefear1
Which in that case must make the PS3 a complete and utter disaster.
Posted by leefear1
Plus I think I read somewhere that there is some sort of global money crisis...........

no it does not

Well if wii is a failiure when it is outselling the PS3 and making far more profit too then in fact it does make the PS3 a disaster.

yes but you see the ps3 has time on its side and the wii only has a few mounths before no one else buys one.

My pleasure, as its Friday & payday, so time to spread the love. There is also an amazing game of tennis being played between Nadal and Verdasco on Eurosport in the Aus Open at present, an absolute joy to watch.

The PS3 is loosing sales by the bucketload, if wii goes down it will have a soft landing on the PS3 below it.

Seriously though this is an analyst and analysts are stupid and do not realise that there are many factors which are affecting all consumer electronics (especially those made in Japan). PS3, 360 and wii will probably all see sales drop this year. However I would bet on wii still making a profit during these hard times which is something that can't be guaranteed for the PS3.

Ahhh Payday. The day of the maonth i forget my bills for a couple of days. Go to blockbuster after work and get me a new game.

Maybe one day crimbo will too understand the joy that is payday. If only he'd stop bunking off school to post on a website mostly made up of board office workers and students.

@ ensabahnur another fine post. South Park rocketh! that ep was awesome too.

Whos winning in the tennis by the way?

WII RULESS!!! ahem!

2 years its been out with no price reduction, and a distinct lack of decent software. Perhaps the fad is coming to an end?
I don't think so, I think there are still plenty of people in the market for a Wii, but it does need to be reduced in price now.
Posted by Conkers
It’s two sets all, Nadal one game up n the fifth, but he started on service anyway so all to play for. Verdasco is definitely on the ascendancy anyway.

Stop bunking off school!

I almost feel embarrassed looking at the Wii section in games shops since everything is shovelware these days, something has gone wrong, its the crap games!
Posted by crimbo
you need an education
Posted by ricflair
About six months with a lack of decent software, not two years. Everything was fine and dandy but for some reason they pretty much stopped after SSBB in June/July.

As Nintendo have gone for the casual market, they could be seen to be miles away from saturation point - if they are trying to make it as much a part of the home as your PC, DVD player etc. Between Japan, USA and Europe alone there are about 1.15bn people. Average 2.4 household gives 262m household to sell to!!

My tongue is in my cheek, but if sales do slow all they have to do is bring the price down to just over £99 - £120 to kickstart the sales again. Which I think they should do as a consumer, but I can definitely see why they haven't from a business standpoint.

The thing is it was the cheapest console with the cheapest games for something like 18 months when it came out and it got got a stranglehold of the market during this time.
Posted by AJDarkstar
Uh-huh. Not possible that it's been selling so well that most people who want one already have one then?

As for good games, how come I have more games for my Wii than my PS3? In fact, I only have a few more 360 games than Wii. Hmm.... tell me, is ignorance really that blissful?

I left uni last year. i think i've had enough education for now. Stop squandering yours. Mummy and daddy can't keep stealing stuff and selling crack to support you forever you know.

Ricflair, there is a new promo on Bravo that uses your very own avatar clip in it. It is a very good promo…

This is very true, lest should they ever get above their station they should know that Chuck is there to put them in their place, with his manly beard.

I actually bought some multi-format games like the Lego series and the likes of Saints Row 2 for PS3 just so I'd have something to play on it besides Blu-ray films, which is the main reason I got a PS3. So far I've got 4 exclusives on PS3. My Wii collection is nearly all exclusives, plus a few buffed-up PS2 conversions, like the rather cool Scarface.
The 360 is also a good console, except for the dismal build quality (I had it refuse to read a disc on me again the other day -- doesn't happen very often, but I've never had another console do it unless the disc looks like someone ground it into the pavement), but some people need to open their eyes and stop being so closed-minded to the fact that the Wii is a legitimate console, and enjoying huge success after taking a massive risk in order to move gaming out of its rut. I loved the GameCube, thanks to games like Rogue Leader and Monkey Ball, but aside from Nintendo's own games, it didn't really have anything over the Xbox or PS2 -- it was a level playing field, and rather boring for it. People talk about a single-console future, but where's the fun in that? Buy all three and enjoy every side.
Now even Sony and MS are both saying the next-gen will be about more than just extra power, so let's hope Nintendo have done what they always seem to do, inspiring innovation in others. I just hope the next Xbox and PlayStation don't copy the motion controls -- rumours are already suggesting the direction Sony intend to take the PSP involve copying the DS's touch screen. Surely that just makes it a half-clone of a DS, but with more power?
Posted by Scaff
Oh wiiboy101 is it really you?

Are you once again going to drop into a sweary rampage of Sony/MS hate? (please say yes)

By the way you still owe me answers to a huge number of questions, but if it is you I will start you of with an easy one.

Can you please finally provide proof of you claim that a Wii clocked to 3.2ghz will 'blow' the PS3 and 360 out of the water.
Posted by Obscure_Metaphor
my wii sits next to my tv, doing nothing, because the best games came out for it at launch and theres been nothing worth playing ever since.

i cant believe im actually saying this, i used to love nintendo, but now i honestly couldnt care less. my wii is one step away from being sold, only the fact that i liked twilight princess and want to play it through again is keeping it from ebay.

so

screw nintendo. i hate that they've made me hate them.
Posted by humorguy
360 sales levelling off,. PS3 sales never really taken off, PS2 still selling well, Wii and DS sales levelling off. Retro though the LIVE services going through huge growth, 10 million DOSBox downloads, an ever growing ebay retro section and the success of GOG.com all show people are playing games they own or are buying older rather than new games.

The public have finally started giving up on the bland and shallow modern games and are finding more interest in older games, for the first or second time!

Emulation gets easier and games of any age on any platform are now easy to play on the modern platforms, which drives this revolution.

So for the first time, we may be seeing that video gaming, because of the stupidity of the industry, is going to be a 20 year 'blip' and will soon come to an end, like rollerskates, B/W TV's,Rubik's Cubes and Pet Rocks!
