He's been calling for this for years now, and it's about time the government took notice. This is becoming increasingly relevant, with games annihilating all other optical media in the shops last year. Let's hope someone listens. And I agree, "history of gaming" probably sounds like fun but animation, developing C++ and shorter courses for things like procedural physics would be of much more use to the industry. Whilst I agree with what he says about the Uk games industry, I think alot of his fear has to do with the current state of Eidos.
Personally I don't want Eidos to piss away government money that could be better spent elsewhere. If it were Ubisoft, EA, or anyone other publisher I'd be happy with, but looking at Eidos current profit margins, their fiscal loss last year where they somehow pissed away several million, I wouldn't trust them with the funds they seek.
That and every studio they seem to have is being dissolved at the moment means why should they receive help when they can't run their business properly. ubisoft no way they make cheap crap give it to EA Thought you were leaving?
He's the creative director, so why haven't we seen any Fighting Fantasy-esque games then? Pah. what about deathtrap dungeon. that was kind of fighting fantasy esque.
If they did make a series of fighting fantasy rpgs i'd definately get one.
Its not just eidos though is it. You are forgetting Rare, R* and Lionhead for a start. If there'd been more help from the government than Free Radicaal and sector 4 would probably still be around.
Courses are definately not what what they should be either. It would be useful if you can find a course that'll teach you c/++ and games programming in general. kind of fundemental to polaying games.
The lack of this however does to a certain extent make it easier for people without formal qualifications and just actual talent to get into the industry. Its TOTALLY FF - it being based on book 6 I believe. However, that was on the Playstation... Isn't it about time we saw 'Vault of the Vampire' in glorious next gen graphics and surround sound...
I have a chubby just thinking about it. Maybe if gaming companies offered some form of apprenticeship, i wish i had gone to uni to learn to develop games but i didnt and now i feel its too late to quit work and do uni. If however there was an option of an apprenticeship and jump at the chance. That way people can be taught in-house exactly how the game devs want them to While waiting for the page to load on my iphone, the guy in the photo attached to the article looked like Frank Butcher before it loaded properly. oh good lord you're right. I didn't really think about it, it was always advertised as being inspired by but not a translation.
Easy boy but ore Fighting Fantasy would rock. Especially if eidos gave the license to bioware to do something with. That'd be right up thier preverbial street! I too regret not going to uni to do games design. But if the industry is to be believed than going to uni to do games design would probably hinder your chances.
After reading a few adds for jobs in the sector it looks like the best way to go is to just learn c++ and do some modding for games and use that as experience. Thinking attemping to make some community games for the 360 wouldn't be a bad route as it kind of kills two birds with one stone.
Go learn c and get some experience of buggering about with games engines through modding is my best advice.
Don't give up on your dream man!!! hmmm.... they need people with physics and maths knowledge who know C.... Will have a look what the money's like when i get out of uni (currently doing physics, about 1/4 of our practical course is programming) |
