Former Sony chief: ‬Nintendo is getting it right

A former chairman‭ ‬pledges his confidence in Nintendo
A former Sony chairman‭ ‬has pledged his confidence is a number of‭ ‬Kyoto-based technology companies,‭ ‬including Nintendo.‭

Nobuyuki Idei (pictured third from left) was Sony's chairman from‭ ‬1999-2005,‭ ‬and now serves as a business and investment consultant.‭ He ‬told The‭ ‬Financial Times that a company such as Nintendo makes him confident in the future of‭ ‬Japan's‭ ‬struggling‭ ‬electronics industry.

Idei, still a renowned figure in the sector,‭ ‬also urged that‭ ‬Japan's electronics industry‭ ‬needed to consolidate in order to‭ ‬remain competitive.‭ ‬His comments come after a tumultuous number of months for the country,‭ ‬which had recently fallen into a recession,‭ ‬and is being hurt by export complications due to the strong Yen.

But Idei implied that the Japanese electronics industry should not be completely absolved from blame.‭ ‬"In the past,‭ ‬Japan was criticised for being an over-banked country‭; ‬now it is over-electronics,‭" ‬he‭ ‬says.

Idei also fired criticisms at‭ ‬Taro Aso,‭ ‬Japan's Prime Minister,‭ ‬as well as‭ ‬Japan's national bank,‭ ‬for their inaction over recent hard times. ‭"‬Mr Aso visited Korea but I couldn't find any evidence that they talked about the‭ ‬Yen,‭" ‬he says,‭ ‬speaking in regards to the Yen's‭ ‬73‭ ‬percent rise against Korea's Won‭ ‬since‭ ‬2008‭ ‬began,‭ ‬which‭ - ‬coupled with the proximity of the two nations‭ - ‬is making Japanese export trade uncompetitive.‭

In regards to‭ ‬Panasonic's recent‭ ‬$9‭ ‬billion takeover of former-rival Sanyo,‭ ‬Idei believes that there is more opportunity for company consolidation,‭ ‬which would help protect‭ ‬Japan's susceptibility to the global economic downturn.

Idei‭ ‬also believed that brighter futures are ahead for electronics devices that go beyond processing information,‭ ‬but,‭ ‬as paraphrased by the FT,‭ "‬sense what it is happening in the world and then act on it.‭" ‬This is where‭ ‬Idei cited Nintendo's Wii as an example of going beyond.

If anybody's opinion on flogging consoles could be trusted its this guy.

Fixed.
Posted by almanac2015
Seriously doubt he'd need it really.
Posted by Dajmin
He's promoting the use of gimmicky old technology instead of R&D. Of course it makes sense from a business perspective.

If people will lap up the old hardware, why bother risking spending money developing new stuff?

Great moral lesson here, kids - don't try, it's not worth it.

Edit:
That actually sounded a bit harsh. I have respect for Ninty pushing the idea of alternative input methods. I just wish they'd have stuck some decent hardware inside the box as well.

Dude...

It's a new year. Why are you still on here spouting the same old ********?
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
i think he was talking more about the controls and doing something to bring gaming to wider audience. Like he no doubt did with the PS2. 1999-2006 is pretty much the heyday of the machine before the current gen kicked off.
Posted by almanac2015
Because nothing changes by it being new year. The Wii hasn't, in the last 30 days, got half a dozen hardcore titles.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Is that altogether or recently. Because altogether it has at least 20.

Coming soon and out since just before christmas i can name at least six.

Dead rising,
Mad world
Pikmin
Call of Duty; world at war
Tales of Symphonia 2
The conduit
Quantum of solace
world of goo
strong bad
sam and max season 1/2
broken sword remake
capcom vs tatsunoko

Nintendo are getting it right on the business side... a pity that it's gaming side is so feeble.
Posted by crimbo
its clear why he got booted out of sony then cause this guy clearly does not know what he is talking about.
Posted by colonel whiskers
My question applies to you also.
Posted by WHERESMYMONKEY
Of course not. The guy behind the PS2 obviously has no clue what he's talking about. I'm starting to think that you aren't a fanboy at all. just retarded.

nintendo have indeed got it right... for their shareholders. nothing else.

seen an advert last night for paper mario. wasnt that out ages ago, last year?

are things really going that great?!

I'm not all about hardcore games, but I do like stuff that actually has a point. A storyline. Replayability beyond looking like a tool. It doesn't affect me these days anyway, but it still bugs me when we keep getting "we're catering to core gamers" lip service.

Dead Rising is getting a better control scheme, but hardly any zombies and no time limit. Simple. And because they know the market they're aiming at - even more lovely outfits to help kill the zombies.

MadWorld and The Conduit are about the only ones on that list that look like they'd have been worth picking up.

Pikmin is a remake of a game you can already play on the Wii, just with a slight controller mod. Great, time well-spent there. Graphical upgrade? Nope. Extra levels? Nope.

A couple of point-and-click games in there. I used to like them, and if done properly they can be good. But that tends to be more interactive storytelling than actually playing a game. Sam & Max at least has the physical problem solving to help it.

Quantum of Solace is getting mediocre reviews across the board - unsurprising for a movie tie-in.

Capcom vs Tatsunoko is unlikely to see a Euro release. Never heard of it though, so can't say if it's good or not.

I accept that it's starting to get the odd decent title in there, but the "worth REplaying" list is still way shorter than the "worth playing" list.

And...the other 2 consoled have?

I am so impressed with this attitude. Of course this man is right. Until we squeeze every drop we can from current tech there is no point in dumping money into r and d.

The leaps between generations are becoming less and less pronounced. It has not happened this generation but there will come a point when the new processor's percentage increase over it's predecessor will become marginal.
8 bit to 16 bit = 100% increase
xbox to xbox 360 = 100% increase? i don't think so but i do admit it's quite an advancement (same for ps2 to ps3). But The leaps are only going to get more and more lack lustre every time we progress a generation.

In an age of global warming and carbon footprints i don't think we can logically or morally call for huge r and d teams constantly toiling for lets face it "games". I hereby applaud anyone who tries to reinvent the wheel. Who says we need new tech i think more often than not we simply need new application.
