I thought it was a very clever game but massively lacking in gameplay, especially for 1200 points. It came across as a tech demo to me.
Unless he actually creates a game with good and long lasting gameplay, then I don't give two hoots if he completes it or not. Braid: absolutely fantastic game
I was so reluctant to buy it at the cost it's at - but eventually gave in and am so glad that I did.
Completed it (not with all the stars - sod that) with all jigsaw pieces but am fairly ashamed to admit I had to use the internet to solve one of the puzzles (a bridge too far) and used a 'clue' on the internet to help solve another (worked the remaining bit out myself).
But yes, brilliant game, ingenious, beautiful, fantastic soundtrack, some solid puzzles that gave the perfect amount of satisfaction when you worked them out.
A perfect example of what an indie XBLA game can be. I didn't "get" the Braid demo. Maybe I just missed something, but it didn't feel like the amazingly accomplished title everyone went spare about. Maybe it just needed a tutorial or something for those of us who aren't mind-readers.
That said, I am interested in seeing more of his work. Not sure if a 2D RPG is going to be that good though - other than justification for a platform game where you backtrack all the time. We'll see :) Loved Braid, some of the best platform puzzling ever. fact.
So I am thoroughly intrigued about what he can do with a 2D RPG... :D This isn't a criticism but I really think you have to have a brain that works in a certain way for Braid.
It's just like in IQ tests where you have the logical next steps for a rotating shape. Some people can do it, some people's brains can't work it out.
The concept of Braid is simple and should take only a few seconds to work out (just like 2D Mario games, but X rewinds time)- the problem is working out how you can put it into practice to get the jigsaw pieces.
Maybe one of the things you could do to get the demo is go on You Tube, search the first couple of puzzles and then find out what kind of things you're expected to work out to complete puzzles. Braid is without a doubt one of the highlights on XBL for me anyway and the next game from this dude is one ill be keeping a close eye on.
And by the way, the ending (dont worry, no spoilers)? Holy Moly, for a wee game it certainly delivers a knockout punch. The demo is just the first world isn't it? It's pretty easy and probably not the best representation of the full game to be honest. The first level of each world is pretty much the tutorial for each new ability, the rest is all down to brain power, which is the draw of the game. It's more of a puzzler than a platformer I'd say.
Best game on Live Arcade IMO... Yes, Including my beloved Street Fighter :D |
