Bring your big hair, shoulder pads, black gloves, hyper and technicolour clothes that look like they've been stiched together from an exploded wardrobe... and i'll bring these flicks. You'll have a ball. I guarantee you'll never have laughed so hard.
Fashion Spotting/80's Movie Night Classics!
Laughing at fashion is the main appeal of all 80's movies, but these ones are particularly guilty for making fashion their main story-line! The most fashion-spotting fun can be found in these titles, along with the ones dancicals section: in 80's movie night terms, these are the classics: the absolute gold.
Earth Girls Are Easy. Unlike movies like Witches of Eastwick, which were ashamed of their 80's roots, Earth Girls Are Easy wears it on its sleeve, shoves it in your face, and even worse... DANCES with it...
Purple Rain. If i had to pick one movie that defines what i mean when i say "The 80's" and laugh, it would be Purple Rain, without question. Just a mere glance at the opening credits sequence will say "80's" to you: the shots of still faces, the debauched-looking people, the fashion, the smoke. If it weren't so terribly acted, it would be darn great fun, but its shlock acting adds charm for this movie night's purposes.
The Lost Boys - fashion is given a prominent place in a vampire flick by shlock mainstream director Joel Schumacher. On any other night, i'd say give this a miss... But on a cheesy 80's movie night, it suddenly becomes one of the best drive-in flicks available.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. This is the definitive 80's movie night classic.
High School Reunion Collection (The Breakfast Club / Sixteen Candles / Weird Science). This collection stands for all the brat-pack flicks of the 80's, including St. Elmo's Fire and Pretty in Pink.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Collector's Edition) (High School Reunion Collection).
Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Oh lordy...
The Dancicals
These "dance-musicals" might all have been in the classics section, because you get the best value out of them than any of the others, but i thought they were so perfectly cheesy they needed a section all their own.
These musicals which are more about dancing than music will provide enough fun and laughter for a night of their own. Flashdance, Xanadu, Dirty Dancing (Collector's Edition), Footloose.
Just Plain Corny... A Corniness not possible outside the 80s
The Karate Kid. This is the pinnacle of 80's corniness. I can't even put into words how corny.
My Stepmother Is an Alien. With a title like this, you can't go wrong. It was like drive-in flicks became proper movies in the 80's.
Revenge of the Nerds/ Revenge Of the Nerds II - Nerds in Paradise. I have no more words!
Weekend at Bernie's. No, stop!
What's that? You want to laugh... and be disgusted at the same time? If only such a movie existed...
Bad Taste (Limited Edition) I struggle to put this on a cheesy list, because its supposed to be funny. It will fit the mood of the others, and if you've got a girl there, she'll squeal at the disgustifyingness of it and insist on cuddling up to you... Or she'll puke... Its a gamble, all right, but one Peter Jackson will give you the option of taking.
Re-Animator (The Millennium Edition). While we're on 80's horror comedies...
The Fantasies
The Goonies The NeverEnding Story The Princess Bride (Special Edition) Labyrinth The Dark Crystal This creeps me out! Legend (Ultimate Edition) Ridley Scott has a bash at 80's fantasy. Willow (Special Edition) This one at least has Val Kilmer in it! The Wizard A kid in video-game championships - fantasy for 80's kids.
The Early Nineties Hang-over Flicks
Everyone knows the early nineties were suffering a massive hangover after the 80's. So here are some early nineties flicks that you can watch and get the same laff-value as genuine 80's ones.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Point Break
Wayne's World 1 & 2 - The Complete Epic. These go hand in hand with Bill and Ted. Too fun not to include.
