GTA IV PC: First impressions

Eyes-on: New features revealed for the PC port
It seemed a little weird to be standing in such a huge queue to see a game 98.9 percent of the population has played already. But this isn't just any game. This is GTA IV, and it was the first time anyone outside of Rockstar had seen it running on PC.

Before firing up the game itself, Rockstar kicked off the presentation by telling us what's new with the PC version, with a new replay system being the biggest of all.

The game is constantly recording the 30 most recent seconds of play. At any time you can stop the game, bring up the replay and watch your crazy antics again. But that's not all.

Just like in Halo 3, you are able to edit your replays, changing camera angles to capture the action from the perfect view, save your creation, and even splice together multiple edited clips to create your own mental GTA IV movies.

Rockstar says the multiplayer mode will also see new features expanding on the console package, although it held back on any specific details. Cock tease.

It also promised that an improved and enhanced filter system will be in place for finding servers, so locating a server playing the mode you want will be a lot easier.

Focusing more on the technical side of things, Rockstar goes on to say that the PC version is polished "well beyond what it was on PS3 and 360".

A ridiculously high resolution is to be expected, but Rockstar also said the PC version has been buffed up with better textures, longer draw distances and an all-round touch up over the console versions.

But to be honest, try as we might, when the game was finally booted up we struggle to notice any obvious visuals differences. It looked near enough identical. Even down to the same stuttering frame rates outside when the view points down a road and a fair few cars are thrown on screen. This could be improved on for the final version, but we were hoping to see slick 60fps rates already.

A Rockstar man played through the mission - called Three Leaf Clover - in which Niko joins Packie and co on a bank heist. Epic mission. But again, no differences from the console version.

It was even being played with the Xbox 360 USB controller (although keyboard and mouse controls are also an option) so you're looking at the exact same experience, just from a bigger, more expensive box. But for one of the most successful videogames of all time, you can't really moan about that.

I hoping lookied crap as they hadn't cranked the res up for the example and left it at the norm, and th rig they were using was crap so the frames stuttered. It all hinges on the frames problem.

Are the editors at this site idiots?

The PC will at a minimum support vastly higher resolutions. Also, they themselves said the PC version will have additional support via replay's and multiplayer, so why the snide "The exact same experience for more money" comment. Dick.

How little do the editors get paid? It seems as if none of them can afford a decent gaming PC so they are intent of belittling PC gamers.

At least in the future, send someone from your website who isn't ignorant of PC gaming and lacks an axe-to-grind against PC gaming.

What a lazy piece of journalism. I'm not expecting Times standard witticisms, or Pulitzer Prize entries, but this magazine long before the days of Jazza Rignall et al was a polished piece of well informed, enthusiastic reports and reviews about a subject that they lived 24/7.

You are supposed to be writing this as if it was your dream job. If its not paying enough, or you hanker to move to an established publication then please do and hire the staff writers that you have been advertising for sooner rather than later, or better still give me the job* so I can move nearer to my Playfire.com owning friend Ben in Blackheath.

The writer should have been a bit more diplomatic here and reserved judgement until it was running on a more powerful PC or a finished version of the game. PC gmaes are notoriously unreliable, even after months of beta testing, but we put up with that as it generally looks the shiznit.

*I'll be your best friend, and first swapsies on my panini foil stickers...

I'm halfway through packing as i'm moving house... I'm a bit tetchy at the moment as i think it'll be an all nighter. Apologies for that diatribe.

I love CVG most days.

Can't wait for the additional carnage of the completion day!

What a stupid thing to say...of course PC Gaming is more expensive, PCs do a hell of a lot more than just play games, and to incite that as a criticism in an article about a forthcoming game is ridiculous.

I'm going to open up a can of worms here but I'd argue it's not even much more expensive at the moment- I picked up a dual core AMD, 2GB RAM, SLI motherboard, 160Gb HDD, case & a 9800GT for my stepdad for £290 this week. Add to that the price of console peripherals and the fact that new 10 games a year will cost you at least £150 a year more than the PC ones do and there's not much in it tbh.

Just for the record I have several systems, but having a PC has never stunted my spending.

Are you retarded?

so the pc doesnt utterly out-perform the consoles. boo ****ing hoo.

I hate to agree with you, but that pretty much seems to be the gist of this comment section. :?

The tone of that 'preview' was very much that of a resentful consoletard, angry that the PC version is going to be improved. Really CVG, c'mon...

I have to agree with you here. You can pick up a fairly powerful gaming rig for around £500 these days, you could get it for much cheaper if you built the thing yourself too. My PC is unbelievably outdated now, and I think the best (and cheaper) option is to buy a new one instead of a new 360 or PS3. It will save you money in the long run.

Why cant they add the server list picking thing to the ps3 version! would make life so much easier!
Posted by lmimmfn
id like to know WTF happened my comment about the reviewers absolutely stupid comment on the PC version being the same 'for a more expensive box', no mention of the fact that the game will be a lot cheaper on the PC and PC's arent consoles so why compare in the first place, especially in a bloody preview. There are also a few other comments that were written last night that are now missing

Anyways, much better preview at gamespot and IGN, seems theyre actually interested in the game, sorry to hear you were forced to write the PC preview Mr. Mike Jackson, you can go back to your PS3 console spot now and maybe suggest to the rest of the CVG team that you shouldnt write about PC stuff cos youre crap at it.

Id love to see a preview of a PS3 game here stating theres no difference between it and the 360 version 'on a more expensive box'. Talk about immature

Sorry i had just got back from a long 9 days out on the moors and was trying to not worry about getting my GCSE results the very next day and trying to get used to using a keyboard again.

Calm down. Jesus Christ, you would think he was insulting your mum. Take a chill pill.
Posted by Bill0151
Sounds like the reviewer didn't want a 'better experience' and chose to ignore the facts. Higher resolutions and better draw distance with the exact same frame rate? That's better already isn't it?
Plus I don't have an xbox or a ps3, but I do have a pc...so I'll gladly pay my £30 instead of paying a couple of hundred quid for a console to play it on.
Sounds good to me.

looking forward to 1920*1200 and i know my rig wont stutter , should be playable now (ps3 version was crap graphically imho)
Posted by lmimmfn
well i take a point of having posts deleted and anal journalists who havnt got a clue
Posted by mojo_zx
now lets all prepare for the old " our game has higher resolutions, so go and clean our floors and feed us grapes you lowly console playing slaves..."
Posted by Waste_Manager
says it all really...

Tendentious preview like no other.

Exactly.
Posted by lococol
i have a console also (ps3) aswell as a gaming pc , nothing about being better than a console owner , just that i prefer to play a game at a high res with a mouse and keyboard ,plus i prefer paying £17.99 - £25 for a brand new game ,consoles serve a purpose ,mines a bloody good blu-ray player and is for sony exclusives like gt5 if it every arrives , so stop feeding me grapes and cleaning my floor and go and enjoy gaming

Well wasn't the main 'selling point' this generation formed around the 'HD wars' (read: resolution)? Both Sony and Microsoft are touting the HD in the marketing of their respective consoles.

Pretty poor article. As countless others have said; reviews wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) hold a PS3 version of the game accountable for the extra cost of a Playstation 3 console. I will be getting this on PC, unless I buy an Xbox 360 first.
Posted by mojo_zx
i suppose your right. damn, must have been a bit angry at something that night...
Posted by microhenry
Ahahaha, these comments have cracked me up! It's just one big flame war!

Oh, and leave poor Mike alone, he used to work for a Nintendo mag ;)

I just bought the ps3 version and am very happy with it, it's much easier for me as I don't trust PC gaming. I don't know how many times thats I've bought games to find out that they don't run and get crazy errors that there are no ways of fixing.

The PC is for RTS games and Call of Duty (mouse and keyboard wipes the floor with controllers) and consoles are for the rest. Plus you know that you're game will work...or not so much these days what with the RROD and PS3 firware issues. Heck, the only problem free one is the crappy old Wii!

I wonder if any of these features will be in console DLC?

GTA always looked better on the PC, be interesting to see how much for GTA IV
