Huge Home update today

Service down for several hours to make it a better place
Sony has said that Home will be unavailable later today for around six hours while some maintenance work goes on behind the scenes.

The main reason for the extra work is to "ease the difficulty some people are having accessing PlayStation Home", which has obviously been put down to "the high demand for the service".

SCEA explains, "Sony Computer Entertainment will conduct system maintenance for PlayStation Home on Thursday, December 18, 2008. At this time PlayStation Home will be updated from ver. 1.03 to 1.04. The system maintenance is scheduled to start at 12 midnight (PST), and the service is expected to resume in approximately 6 hours but may change depending on the circumstances. PlayStation Home will be unavailable during the maintenance window.

"The reason for this maintenance is to ease the difficulty some people are having accessing PlayStation Home due to the high demand for the service.

"Additionally, as part of version 1.04, the voice chat feature within PlayStation Home will be temporarily suspended. As soon as we are ready to resume the voice chat feature, we will inform you via PlayStation.com and PlayStation.Blog. In the meantime, we encourage users to make use of the Wireless Keypad for PS3 or any USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard for text chat and also the 'phone friend' features to communicate within PlayStation Home.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and kindly ask for your understanding."

In other news, we won our first game of chess last night.

I played some Chess last night too.. i lost!.. Even though there's not a lot to do at the moment, it's been quite pleasant meeting folk at the bowling alley, and meeting friends before going into a game.
Posted by Mark240473
I've heard stories of websites trying to crash the HOME servers by making a nuisance of themselves, with as many people as they possibly can. It obviously worked.
Posted by Dajmin
I finally got to the bowling alley for the first time last night and it was alright.

But what I'd prefer is them to sort out the clipping issues. When you perform emotes and stuff you stop being a solid entity so you can push through walls and other people - this shouldn't happen with proper Havok-programmed stuff and looks silly.
Posted by voodoo341
I can't see how that would work. It's not as if the servers let people connect until it crashes. Once the limit is reached no one else can connect until someone leaves. The congo lines they were setting up were funny.
Posted by Mark240473
I think a Soccer AM minigame would be great. Maybe crossbar challenge or the spot kick game. EA could even use their FIFA tech. With weekly leaderboards I can imagine it being quite addictive for footy fans.
Posted by spud-o
Mark240473 you are right. There was a web site (ive forgot the name) that invited everyone to join them in home for a dance off......the world is full of assholes
Posted by StonecoldMC
Pretty sure that was G4. I was listening to the 1UP podcast yesterday and they were talking about Home for quite a while and out of a panel of 4, 2 thought it was meh and 2 thought it was great (Shane is the biggest Sony Fanboy ever though, so dont know if that counts).

So there you have it, I think it's a marmite scenario, some Gamers will hate it and some will love it. I do look forward to a time when it's at its peak and bursting full of content, though that may take some time.
Posted by Mark240473
Too right. Why do some people just find it hard to let others enjoy themselves? They act like children....
Posted by Rob S London
Had my first go of Home last night - If Sony are pinning thier comeback on this then they are woefully deluded.
Posted by infamousdb
my first time on home i was called a black **** and even though you can mediate i.e block people you can only block people in apre populated list which often doesnt list the offender - i will not be using home anytime soon
Posted by svd_grasshopper
what comeback is this? they they already sold more than the 360 in the same space of time...

and you cant compare it to a wii, which is some form of cheap console/toy hybrid.
Posted by StonecoldMC
Of course Sony should have sold more than the 360, the previous install base was what, 5x bigger?

If theres a band you like and you buy their first album then you'll probably buy their second and third, its a bit harder to try and crack that market to any newcomers, especially when the 'Supergroup' are so far ahead of there nearest rival.

Just count to 10 and chill out.

count to 10... and shut up.

i thought the ps1 and 2 were absolutely bollocks mate. there goes your theory. big cloud of smoke.

i had a saturn and a dreamcast. i was actually anti-sony when sega was about. it just happens sony have the best system this time around (cause sega have disappeared - their systems were rock solid AND had great games)

sony has definately done a good job this time around though. amazing peice of hardware and the games are stunning, the free online is great too.. something implemented by SEGA!

No you're a dick, stone cold is right, the ps2 user base was so vast that it's successor should have sold in huge numbers by now.
The fact that sales have been far less than expected is partly down to owners of the ps2 being reluctant to upgrade, strange really, if as you say the ps3 is so good.
Posted by Mark240473
Well that's pathetic. However, you can't blame HOME for brainless idiots as you'll unfortunately find them everywhere. I can understand how you feel though.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
»»»

whats so strange about that ****?

the ps3 has sold faster than the first two.. and the real sales didnt kick in till about mid-life.

the only expectations come from fanboys keeping tabs on 'the war'. little roach.
Posted by spooney100
Unfortunately you get *****s like this in all walks of life, they're just braver when they can hide behind an avatar, I was on home a couple of days ago and there was black guy (or at least his avatar was black) and he was going round abusing white people (mainly the white female avatars) he was being racist, sexist and threatening people (though that showed what a prize ***** he really was) saying he would stab you etc. His name was experement (yes it was spelt wrong). I reported him and so did everyone else he abused. If you come across him you know what to expect.
But on another note sonyfanboys really are ****ing wankers, I've been on the US and Jap versions of home and the US one is about 2-3 times bigger then the European/Australasian one and they got some weird UFO game in the central plaza (their version of the main sq) and the Jap ones about 5 times the size of our one with a bigger selection of games (the games from the Namco beta) with more free stuff to unlock, thev've even got darts in the bowling alley and a proper bar area where with loads of sitting area which also bizzarly has some sort of office area upstairs and the US one has some sort of jukebaox thing in the central plaza that works by votes cast on songs.
So next time you sony fanboy wankers bash one out over sony just think how much they **** us Europeans over.
Posted by _Marty_
True, that's not HOMEs fault - however, I completely empathise with the guy for why he wouldn't want to put himself in that position again.
Is there a 'report user' function in HOME?
Posted by _Marty_
Any need for that?
Not sure you completely *get* quite how insulting that term is.
Posted by svd_grasshopper
or maybe you your just a posh **** yourself and you still find words like that shocking... and it was in retaliation to him calling me a dick, trying to defend his little bum-buddy (you!)

It really dosent matter if they have sold the same or more than they did with the PS2. If Halo 3 sold 10 million in a year, do you think if Halo 4 sold 2.5 million then it would be thought of as a success, it would still be good results but not the same success. This is what buisinesses call forecasting and projections and im pretty sure Sony thought they would have sold more than they have currently.

Dont take things too personally, im not having a dig at the PS3 just giving my humbkle opinion on what the curtrent state is. Jeesh!

Ah, k109\svd\Vercetti102 - you just can't help but be an obnoxious, hormonal little teenager, can you?

Keep it up - I really don't think I can get bored of seeing your useless a**e get banned.

If you need a reason to avoid HOME, then just look at this thread. It's a shame because there are some genuinely decent people on HOME - it's just that we only ever hear about the bad stuff.

The way of the world.

I was refering to a recent article where Sony were talking about Home like it was a system seller.

The PS3 has sold more than PS1/2 at this stage in its cycle, BUT, there are more consoles being sold now than back then, so in terms of market share, exclusives, and numbers currently being sold, they have dropped the ball massively & home aint the the app to fix that...

Jesus...
I wasn't defending him at all - in fact, I can't even recall who you were aiming it at. And posh? Pfft, I'm from Luton, born and bred. Hardly posh.

However, calling someone a 'c*nt' at every opportunity is highly insulting, not to mention that fact that there are plenty of children that visit this site, and shouldn't be subjected to that. Just chill out.
Posted by ensabahnur
»»your wasting your time Marty. i think we'd all be just better off if we ignored him, crimbo, chris_ace (sometimes he's ok) and lordvonPS3. their all just taking the piss
Posted by hayisforhorses
To be honest im not surprised about the rascism, people throw around the C/F/N-bombs all the time on call of duty its sickening. Mostly americans and kids who sound about 10 years old, seems just calling someone an asshole wont suffice anymore.

Sony should just brick the offenders consoles i would laugh my arse off.

Ah, to have an ignore function in these forums...
Though I'd probably bore of reading comments from the same 3 people :)

plenty of children on here... who, you?

drama queen.

children are 10 and under. none of them on here, just the little brats on XBL, equipped with headset.. even they wouldnt flinch at the "c word"... sheltered ****.

But CVG has a ban function and it should use it more instead of leaving these trolls as flame bait.
Posted by Mark240473
An intelligent person would not need to use such words, instead being able to put his opinion across in a more polite manner. If you use them too much they lose their 'power' to shock. So instead of being shocking they just make you look a bit stupid.

So don't bother giving a reply - I can guess.

you have a logout button...

this site (and others) survive on flame bait. whats the point posting it, if they ban the people its intended for?
Posted by StonecoldMC
'But CVG has a ban function and it should use it more instead of leaving these trolls as flame bait. '

Enough is enough, the time has come, the crowd started to shout:

'Bring out the Ban Hammer!'

And so it was brought out and whacked those who deserved to be whacked.

If only...
Posted by spooney100
Actually vodoo you're wrong, theres loads of servers (i.e theres loads oh home sqs, bowling alleys, malls etc, its totally random what one you enter therefore they're never full, I was on home with a mate and we both walked into the bowling alley at the same time but he disapeared (he was sent to a different bowling alley) so I had to send him an invite to get him back for a game of bowling. This is one thing Sony need to sort out.
Posted by _Marty_
Yes, that's right. I'm a 31 year old child...

So what's a 12 year old? An adult?
And it's nothing to do with being sheltered - I swear, I consider it big, clever, excellent for getting a point across, and use the f word at least once every half an hour.
However, there was no need to call, err <looks> ingy a 'c*nt', and even if there was an need for an insult, that word is completely unnecessary.
Did he sleep with your wife? Did he rob from you? Did he murder your child?
No, he merely had a differing opinion to you. Hardly necessary to call him a 'c*nt' because of that, eh?
Posted by svd_grasshopper
Yes, that's right. I'm a 31 year old child...

but he can call me a dick?

whats the difference?

dick is ok, but **** is censored? SEXIST!!
Posted by _Marty_
Would you say dick in front of your parents or boss? Probably.
Would you say c*nt in front of them? Unlikely.

Some terms are considerbly more insulting that others. Dick, tit, moron, idiot. These are fairly minor insults - surely you can see that?

Genuine question here - I've heard that users can't get to play a game, say bowling because other users are using the lanes, is this true and also if you're right there are loads of instances of home then why can't you play a game every time? Is it because there are a limited number of instances? Just curious.
Posted by BYDO
»»»»»»

I was on about the trolls who use words like c**t (you)and other low life swearing morons.
Posted by Xdwardo
Agreed. Stop your moaning you ungrateful c*ck munching knob jockeys, and realise that you're very lucky to be even owning a PS3. For everyone of you c*ck smoking f*ck suckers, there's a thousand poverty stricken aids riddled poor persons who cannot find the next meal today.

Home is free. If you dont like it, ram it up your balloon knot.
Posted by spooney100
»»

You can't play a game everytime because it depends on the bowling alley you're in, if all the lanes are full then no. You could try exiting then returning to the bowling alley (in the hope of entering a different one) but chances are they'll be full too, so you'll be better off just waiting for a free lane.
Posted by Xdwardo
»»»

Yeah the lanes get a bit crowded.. just a bit of pot luck who gets on one eh.
Posted by james17_17
.... anyway ill be glad to actually try it out as so far every time ive tried to get on its just come up with that stupid error code

was hoping for new stuff in the shopping centre and maybe new areas.

I had a thought that the shops will have new stuff on thursdays, just like the PS Store gets updated on thursdays, dont know if thats what will happen or SONY will just add stuff randomly.
Posted by svd_grasshopper

if i came across you in real life id have no problem in telling you what i thought of you.. again, with no repercussions.
Posted by spooney100
Is that what you go in there for, to follow the 'females' round and to virtual dance?
Yeah I do find that sort of thing really sad and pathetic but me I go on it occasionally with a mate or 2 to go bowling or play pool.
Each to their own I guess.

It would be better if the Euro/Aussi home was anywhere near as good as the Jap one.
Posted by _Marty_
Some people 'play' MMOs like that too. I could never understand it. Friday evenings you'd play City of Heroes, go to the main square and see dozens of people dancing at the feet of one of the DJs... Like, err, what's the point?

Your comments have rapidly deteriorated from opinionated to absurd and are now well on their way to becoming grotesque. If you are itching for a fight so badly either go take a cold shower or run about your neighborhood block fifty times.
Posted by voodoo341
I'll second that. The Japanese Home does look a lot more interesting than the European one. Namco etc have all set up Homes in it and have filled them with content. It's even more annoying when you consider Sony made more money online from European owners than it did Japanese ones.
Posted by Mark240473
Obviously Sony are working hard to make the PS3 more successful in Japan and USA by doing these types of things. The Europeans always come last because Sony seem to be doing comparatively better in Europe. Therefor, they don't need to try as hard. It sucks - but that's the truth.
Posted by spooney100
What wankers Sony are. I just logged into home and it seems the update was to add some crappy santa outfits, a diesel shop and some new furniture store and to delete any free stuff you might of unlocked!
All the free clothes, furniture, arcade games, ornaments etc I unlocked from the namco beta have all been deleted.
Thanks you ****ing wankers, but hey your 2bob wankstain Sonyfanboys will still support you despite how much you **** them over.
Posted by _Marty_
Easy man, talk like that will get you shot round these parts.
There are some folk that don't take criticism of the PS3 lightly...
Posted by spooney100
Tell me about it, its bad enough when they do but when Sony shaft you like this and they still defend them, then they have serious mental health issues.
Posted by Mark240473
»

I'd say your posts veer towards mental issues. Well, other than Suivaloom, Crimbo, Tonyb and oh, lots of people actually. This site is totally mental.

Anybody remember 'Everyone's a wally'? You'd probably like that game, Spooney.
Posted by The_KFD_Case
My sympathies - that's a bum deal. Granted, I'm not privvy to what is going on in the back rooms of Sony's decision making processes, but surely updating and adding things to HOME shouldn't come as a surprise for them? If that's the case couldn't they have either released this beta-like version much earlier, or better yet, simply waited a bit longer to fine polish it? As it stands now HOME is hardly the "system seller" juggernaut that Sony might want it to be (though admittedly it is early days yet,) and with this latest cock-up they've managed to aggrevate at least one of their customers (i.e. you).
Posted by spooney100

Never heard of it mate and its not mental issues more like anger issues.

LMAO - I totally had a flashback there.
Do you remember the song that went with it? :)
I found it hilarious - when I was about 11 anyway.

Cop for this!

Now Harry was a hippy (Harry Christmas to his mates);
Turned up to do the wiring, what a two-and-eight!
He opened up the fuse box, it didn't half go dark,
So he fiddled with the terminal, and it all began to spark.
"Cosmic, mahn!" he said, his fingers in the socket,
He threw the switch, began to twitch, and took off like a rocket!

Everyone's a wally, a nellie or a nana or a nerd,
Everyone's a wally, everyone's a wally, that's the word!

Does that ring any bells!

It's all coming screaming back now - though I must confess, I always thought it was Harry Krishna.

Personally, I thought that one was the weakest of the verses too :)
First Wally called in Dick the Brick, who turned up with his hod
And he was up to all the tricks the good for nothing so and so
Like superglue between the bricks instead of using mortar
"Here Dick" said Wally
"Don'tcha think you ought ta use"
"Proper stuff to do the job" but (can't remember these words)
Trampled on the tube and stuck a shovel through his face

And the other one:
Young Tommy was a plumbers mate, a spikey looking punk
You've never seen a geezer dressed in so much friggin' junk
Well he started in the bathroom, and after half an hour
He'd ripped the basin off the wall and pulverised the shower...
"Of course it's working well" he said while swinging on the chain
The system hit him on the head, and flushed him down the drown...

Don't get quality lyrics like those these days :)
